Post here if you need help with any missing concepts :-).

How many pages does your child do each day? What does CLE Math schedule looks like?  How many pages and lessons are in each light unit? Is CLE Math a rigorous curriculum for a strong foundation leading up to high school Math? Can a secular family omit the religious content of the Math course?

My DS and DD have taken both of these courses.  We loved both.  Lots of experiments and options.  Both DS and DD learned how to write lab reports and had a blast in class.  It was always the highlight of our week.  My younger DD will take the new 4th grade science class next year.  Older DS heard from Mrs. Selby (she teaches many science courses at TPS) that it is being taught by her daughter who is a Waldorf teacher.

Could you please tell me that are there quizzes or written narrations in TPS Science classes? How many pages of readings and homework is given per week? Thanks!

Thank you for sharing your experiences! Have your kids done French or Math classes? Do you have to check kids Math homework eack week, scan and upload it to the teacher? How are your experiences if your kids have these classes?

  4. I'm considering TPS  Physical Science class for 6th Graders for next year.

Can anyone give me some good feedback on the Science classes? How many are the experiments, test and quizzes through out the course? Do they have lab report writings and Science written narrations each week? How many hours of homework's given? Did this work out good for your child?

What are your opinions on those as far as difficulty, appropriate level of work for the ages, etc.? Are they rigorous?

Thanks in advance for any input.

Thank you for this. We used Novare Earth Science as well, but I actually really liked it. He's already done Physical Science (honors) through The Potters' School. We use Derek Owens for math but he really prefers live classes for science.

Good info! We need a live class for science although we use DO for math! It sounds like she did just fine with her science pathway though!

Thank you! The teacher for Honors PHysics 1 isn't assigned yet. Looks like Jester is leaving or undecided?

Honestly, I love the look of Jetta's class and we'd probably do it, but we're in Hawaii and so we're limited to the live class times we can do. Oh...I do see she has a noon class though and in central time so that might actually work. I really appreciate your comparison of the two courses! I'm going to take a second look at Jetta's!  EDIT: Her website does say This physics course is ideal for both the STEM-minded student who will take more physics (i.e AP Physics or dual enrollment) later in high school or for the more humanities-minded student who desires a basic physics credit.  Does that mean that your son will plan to take an an additional physics course later?

Would you mind telling more about Physical Science (honors) through The Potters' School?

How many are the experiments,test/exams, lab reports and quizzes through out the course?
How many hours of homework's given each week including reading content?
Do kids have to do experiments during the class or at home as a homework? Any pros/cons?

    Thanks!

I'm considering WHA or TPS Life Science and Physical Science class for 5th and 6th Graders for next year.

Can anyone give me some good feedback on the Science classes? How many are the experiments, test and quizzes through out the course? Do they have lab report writings and Science written narrations each week? How many hours of homework's given? Did this work out good for your child?

Regarding submitting work, I choose to correct the homework assignments with my son instead of having him self-check.  He then makes corrections and highlights any questions he has.  Each class begins with a quiz that covers answers they got in the homework and is followed by students questions and review.  Students are also involved in working problems during class.  The Waucom tablet is recommended, but if you have an iPad it works better because it mirrors the computer screen which my son finds easier to use.  The writing is also neater and more ledgible. (My son uses a $10 stylus from Amazon.)  I downloaded the app Astropad for $29.99 on the iPad and then downloaded the computer version for the iMac.  (Astropad only works with Apple computers.)  Duet Display is cheaper and is designed to work with Apple or Windows computers but after a couple hours of troubleshooting, I never had success getting it to work.  I need to call the company and get help, but I haven't taken the time.  Astropad was more expensive, but I had it downloading and working in minutes.  It also allows the iPad to connect wirelessly which is convenient.

    Thanks for replying in detail!

Like your son, I enrolled my son in online classes because he needed to be pushed. My son is in 6th grade this year.  He is doing both W&R 3 and LA2 this year. They go so well together.  He is also doing Math 6 at WHA and Spanish 2B at Schole Academy.  LA at WHA has the literature & grammar I was looking for because my son is a reluctant reader and needed some competition and someone else to be accountable to.  The writing is completely different from W&R, but uses some of the same concepts.  I was a little concerned about LA being 1.5 hours long, but he is completely engaged and the time flies by.  My son is going to continue with LA3 and W&R4 because they are both fabulous and I feel it is beneficial to do more writing.  Personally, I'd do both instead of adding online science.  My son had Mrs. McGahey this year who is energetic, encouraging, and knowledgeable.  One thing I would do different in 6th grade is to enroll my son in Fundamentals of Latin at WHA instead of Spanish 2B.  I have heard Kelly Songer is a fun teacher.

Veritas Press Self-paced history and Bible are wonderful.  My son started them in 3rd grade and did them year round, even on weekends.  I just kept buying them during sales and he had them all completed by September 2018.  He loved to do them while he was eating breakfast, and I loved listening to them while I cooked and cleaned up.  If you are starting in 5th grade, I'd start with his interest.  My son's favorite was Old Testament & Ancient Egypt.  Julie Etter at WHA teaches Fundamentals of Western Civilization which covers all the VP history levels so if you don't have time for history you can catch up.  I have a friend's daughter who is taking it this year in 7th grade and LOVES it. If you think your son will be ready for The Great Conversations 1 in 7th grade, I'd take her class in 6th grade.  I'm going to have my son to Omnibus 1 Primary (Veritas Press self-paced) and not add any writing assignments because he is taking two writing classes next year.  My daughter is in high school and has taken the high school level The Great Conversations classes and can't fathom doing them self-paced.  I just don't know if he's ready and it's cheaper to do Omnibus self-paced for the exposure until he is ready for live.

We used an online self-paced science curriculum I highly recommend - Experience Astronomy  https://experienceastronomy.com   We are going to do https://www.scienceondemand.info  with Catie Frates next year.  Catie is a creation scientist.  She is passionate about science and a lot of fun to listen to.

I'm not a fan of Math-u-see, but many parents like it for their children if they are not STEM bound.  I know several families that are redoing Algebra 1 & 2 in high school after using Math-U-See.  I haven't found any math curriculum I totally love though.  Math 6 at WHA has been a challenge for my son, but he needed it and will be well prepared for pre-algebra next year.   I am really excited about Pre-Algebra at Schole Academy next year though.  Eric Reini at WHA is great, but I like that the Schole Academy class is 3 times a week and I think the teacher will be a good fit.

I did not do formal spelling this year.  Instead he is doing Touch-type Read and Spell https://www.ttrsonline.com/Account/LogOn?ReturnUrl=%2fDashboard

Could you please share that do students have to scan the practice problems, homework and tests and then they submit them to the teacher in Math 6?  Do students have to do all practice problems or only odd or even problems? How many tests and no. of practice problems for each day? How long do Math work take daily for your ds? Are the Math classes rigorous? Did you like them? Any pros or cons?

    Thanks.

  9. My dd's currently doing Eng. 3 Literature Survey course through TPS.  Has anyone done TPS English 4/5: Children's Literature Analysis and Composition course? How much is the course load? How many essays and readings are included? How much time is expected to spend on assignments, writings and readings per week?

Are the literary techniques and Composition style levels same in all the Eng. 4/5 courses?

I'm wondering if this class proves beneficial for more advanced courses such as Eng.6 College Eng. Course? Any experience with Mrs.Louise Woods? Experiences and recommendations please!

    Thanks for reading

She actually is currently in English 3 with TPS.  She will continue on with them probably to English 4: Western Lit and then AP Lang. Haven't decided beyond that as she will have one more year.

I do have another dd who started with English 4 with TPS after doing their summer Advanced Comp class.  She did two years of English 4 - different classes (this was before they had English 5/6, etc.).  She then went on to AP Lang with TPS.

    Hope that helps!

My son's currently doing TPS Englsh 4/5 British Literature and Composition. (Current Grade 94%). TPS registration's opening this week and l am confused for my ds whether to enroll him in TPS English 6 College British Literature and Composition. l don't know whether that class'll progress his writing and literary analysis ability? He's not planning for AP Tests so thinking of that final class of TPS. lf you've any suggestion then kindly share with me.

Thank you for the detailed information!

I have two dc taking math (Alg 2 this year) with TPS.  They don't find the tablet to be cumbersome at all.  For them, it writes very clearly.  Someone on the boards here recommended the felt nibs which they felt wrote better, felt more like a real pen, and also protected the tablet more so I did get those.  As Rebecca said above, the tablet is only used during class.  The homework and tests are done on paper at home.

    Hope that helps!

Could you please share that do students have to scan the practice problems, homework and tests and then they submit them to the teacher? Which textbook's TPS using for Algebra 2? Do students have to do all practice problems or only odd or even problems? How long do Math work take daily for your dd? Are the Math classes also rigorous like TPS English classes? Which Math classes your kids have done at TPS? Elementary or Logic stage? Did you like them? Any pros or cons?

Do you have also any experience with TPS Science or French classes?

    Thanks.

    We did.  Long story.

A little background.  My dd is ahead so that complicates things.  Her brother is two years ahead in school but she does all the same stuff as him.  So, when he started TPS in Writing Fundamentals 5, I wanted her to start too.  They would let her - too young.  So, she waited.  The next year, she took Writing Fundamentals 5 and the year after Writing Fundamentals 6. I was stubborn and didn’t want to deal with the placement test to get her where I wanted her.  In addition, I discussed it with the teachers and they weren’t too keen on her skipping.  The next year, she took English 1 with HSLDA Academy.  It was a fine class but I wasn’t too impressed.  She got 100% on every essay, and never any feedback.  She can write but not that well.  Needless to say, I swallowed my pride the next year, she took the placement test and tested into English 3 with TPS where she is now.

Sorry for the diatribe.  I hope that answers your question.  She moved to HSLDA Academy without any trouble, but we didn’t find it challenging enough.

let me know if you need any more info.

May l ask that dd your did continue after English 3 at TPS? lf so, which course she did? English Composition or Eng 4/5 or Eng 6? Thanks.

My dd is in a 5th grade (she will be 11 at the end of this school year). We did Fable together at home in 4th following the MP plans and she is in Narrative now. As far as workload it is very manageable and totally consistent and predictable. They spend two weeks on each lesson. The first week they discuss the story they will be writing a paraphrase of and outline the 9 narrative components and turn that in. The following week the final draft of the paraphrase of the story is due. So every second week is heavier as we work on the final draft. At the end of the year she will have turned in 16 writing paraphrases of the stories in the Narrative book. There are other assignments given (such as narrating the story to a parent, looking up vocabulary words) that are not checked or turned in. We do them but they are just a few minutes per day.

I do help my dd with this class and I do more often than not type her final draft for her. She is working on typing though and taking on more and more of that herself. I used to type for her during class but she has gotten fast enough to do that herself. It was her first online class so my intent was always to work with her to be successful.

My dd’s writing has improved dramatically but she has really grown in all her subjects this year so part of that is surely a leap in maturity. The biggest thing about the class is that she just loves it. It is engaging and fun and she enjoys the opportunities to share her work with the class and read what the other kids write.

I think the age range in the class is 8- 13 yo (the kids have chatted about their ages before class) so it obviously is working for a large range of students.

I wouldn’t put a child that young in and expect them to be independent. I always sit with my daughter so I can make sure she understands what she needs to do and I work with her on typing, editing her assignments. There is not a ton of specific feedback on the writing. The teacher is mostly checking off a rubric and being encouraging.

We are very pleased and it has fit our circumstances perfectly. I never intended my dd to be independent. The class makes the work so much more enjoyable and she certainly gets more understanding of the stories and depth from the discussions than we would do at home. She is motivated to do a good job for her teacher and we stay on task with due dates. However, I am still working with her to fine tune her writing and help prod her along when she gets stuck. All that to say, the course and her instructor are just part of it. My coaching and encouragement and guidance has been a big part of it too.

If you have seen the books for the course, the online class follows that format pretty closely spending two weeks per lesson. The class meetings are 2x a week for 45 minutes each (at least her Narrative class this year was). Next year her class will be once a week for 90 minutes.

    Thanks for sharing!

I already have my dd who will be in 6th registered for Chreia/Maxim composition with Memoria Press Online Academy.

She will take more classes but this was one that had to be registered for right away.  It is with a very popular teacher and the class is already full. I'm one who is always on the early side planning and registering but I haven't done anything else yet because the schedule for MPOA is still not 100% set. I'm waiting on a couple more class sections to announce teachers and times before making any more decisions.

I am in agreement that it is still really early, particularly for the younger set.

Could you tell me how rigorous's the Fable and Narrative writing class?  How many writing assignments are given as homework each week? How's the course load? How much time's spent on the homework daily/weekly?  How long are the classes? Have you seen improvements in your child's writing? Does a child has to type the assignment in word document to submit?

May l ask that how many writing projects till now from September your dc has done? ls their writing each week? Could you clarify what types of writing they have written? Do you've to help your dc in the writing assignment?

What are your opinions on those as far as difficulty, appropriate level of work for the ages, etc.? (l am thinking for 4th Grader) Are they rigorous?

Thanks in advance for any input.

    Hi Rosepetal,

Based on the curriculum, are you in Ontario? 🙂  That's where I am and where I've taught in the public high school system.  It's also where I went to high school. 🙂

If your son has done Grades 9 and 10 Academic math, then he will have covered most of what is in a Geometry course in the States.  The Grade 11 Functions course and the Grade 12 Advanced Functions course together will be more or less equivalent to a Pre-Calculus course.  And Calculus is Calculus. 🙂  Having said that, though, much will depend on the school he is currently at.  As you know, all public schools are not equal and there are schools and teachers who simply don't cover everything that they are supposed to in any given course for a variety of reasons.  If your son is strong in math, he should be able to start Derek Owens Pre-Calculus course after finishing his Grade 10 Academic math.  If there are any gaps in knowledge, they should be small and he should be able to either reason through them or find short videos on those topics on Khan Academy - if his Grade 10 math course is thorough. 🙂

    Hope that helps!

    Connie

Dicentra, Thankyou very much for easing me! One thing to ask that in Ontario Maths when school board covers Algebra 2 (USA)?In Grade 10 and Gr 11 of Ontario Public Schools?

Can my son skip DO Geometry course? Whatever Geometry he has learned in his school Grade 9 and 10,will that be good enough for DO Pre Calculus course? Would  this sequence looks good- DO Algebra 2 ———DO Pre Calculus ———DO Calculus?

We want to do Geometry course also, but due to time constraints we have to choose the accelerated path.

    Thanks!!!
