  1. I didn't realize there are multiple editions out there.  I was looking at this one http://www.amazon.com/Precalculus-Lial-Hornsby-Schneider-Margaret/dp/032122762X/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1397009643&sr=1-1&keywords=032122762x as the 3rd edition.  And this one http://www.amazon.com/Graphical-Approach-Precalculus-Hornsby-Rockswold/dp/0321357833/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1397009757&sr=1-1&keywords=9780321357830  as the 4th edition.

  2.

I've submitted applications for dd and had her accepted to her two PAHsers classes by the teachers.  Do I have to pay right away to be double-dog-sure she's in, or can I pay in a week, a month, or anytime before the early-bird deadline?

Good question!  I would like to know too.

Does anyone have any experience with Kathryn Walker as a teacher?  Any input would be appreciated.

  3. I'd suggest something like Hewitt's Conceptual Physics, which would not be math heavy, and which you could do at home on your own schedule, thus allowing you to make the most efficient use of your time.  Since your ds has done labs for both biology and chemistry, I don't think he would need a lab, unless any of his colleges require 3 lab courses.  Not doing a lab saves a lot of time.

Where can I buy this book?  Does it include lab, and do you think if we skip the lab, it would still be acceptable as a high school credit?  Thanks.

  4. The music conservatories ds is interested in are not specific about which science courses he takes with the exception of 2 state universities where 2-3 sciences with labs are required. My son wants to spend 4-5 hours daily practicing his instrument so that he's well prepared for the Pre-screen audition recording and the actual live auditions. We are challenged with time so have to carefully choose his courses. Why 4-5 hours? Because he has a friend who just auditioned at Eastman who advised him that he needs to practice that much because that's what it takes to be competitive. Do you have any children who auditioned at places like Juilliard, Eastman, Peabody, and Oberlin and got accepted? If yes, what was their academics like in high schoo? (Maybe this question ought to be a separate post.)

  5. Ds will be a music major in two years.  Are these science courses good enough for college: Biology/Lab, Chemistry/Lab, and Marine Biology/Lab?  He took Physical Science/Lab in the 8th grade, but unfortunately Wheaton College does not accept courses taken prior to 9th grade.  We're looking to take Marin Biology/Lab next year just so he has three years of science.  He's not a STEM major and so doesn't want to bother with Physics unless necessary.  Thanks for any input.

  6. My ds has had English 2 with Ruth Ann Frederick and loved her as a teacher.  My younger son will take English 2 with her next year.  We haven't taken any English classes with Diana Thomas, but I wouldn't hesitate taking a class with her because she is very knowledgeable.  I believe she was or still is the main teacher for English 1.  Don't quote me on this!

  7. Ds took French 1A in 7th grade and French 1B in 8th grade (from The Potter's School), which is equivalent of high school French 1.  How do I show that he has completed the first high school French course on the transcript?  Do I just show French 1 in 9th grade, and show completion date at the end of 9th grade?

  8. You might want to search PA Homeschoolers for information on any AP History. You will see if you son is ready for the demanding work. Most kids take AP history in the 11th and 12th grade. As far as how many essays, you can find that out through the College Board. And the essays have to be written in a certain way to meet the requirements to pass the test. Sorry, this is all I know for now.
