We start tomorrow with MFW ECC along with MFW 1st. I was curious who else was doing MFW ECC this year? It might be fun for us to get ideas from each other and be able to support each other throughout the year! This is my 2nd year homeschooling, so I could definitely use any tips/advice!!

We're finishing the read a loud of Charlotte's Web. Our kids have requested to watch the movie soon. Which is better, the 2006 or the 1970's one?? I want one that is similar to the classic story and not changed to add violence, etc.
Thanks!

I went to a small local conference for the first time this year. They offered a "free night" on Thursday so I did not have to pay to be admitted. The curriculum booths were fun and helpful to view things "in real life" however I would never pay the around $100 cost they usually charge.
Also, it is so crowded and packed at the one I attended that I don't know how you could go about meeting new friends or others!!

If anyone has the list from last year, I would LOVE if you would be willing to share it!! They had some fun and great books that my oldest enjoyed last summer that I'd never even heard of before!!
Thanks!

I remember last year Sonlight offered a summer reader package. We didn't purchase it, but used that list for our library trips for my avid reader.
I can't find anything like that on their website today. Are they not doing a summer reader package this year??

I signed up online for the Scholastic Summer Reading program. I called and registered as a Homeschool. Then, I went online and set up my "class". However, I still cannot figure out how to log reading minutes online?? Their website is very confusing to me!
THanks!!

I prefer a dedicated homeschool space. Currently, we are using a 2nd floor bonus room as a homeschool room/playroom. That tends to work well for us.
If nothing else, make sure you have wall space for bookcases!

What are your must-have Math Manipulatives? We currently own a fake coin set, pattern blocks, Cuisinaire rods, and an abacus. I would like to purchase some others, though, since my soon to be 1st grader struggles with math without hands-on help.
I've thought about something to help with fractions.
What are the ones you can't live without?
I have a 3rd grader, 1st, and K.

My child will be going into 3rd grade in the fall. I feel that the only subject he needs more work on is writing. Not handwriting, but actually putting ideas down on paper.
He is a child that LIKES workbooks, and asks to do "learning activities" even on the weekends and summer.
I thought about getting a fun writing workbook for him to work on slowly over the summer. However, I don't have any homeschool stores nearby to view materials. It's hard online to get a feel for something.
I'm looking for something fun, inexpensive, etc to encourage writing. Looking for any ideas/suggestions!

I think about how clean, quiet, and peaceful my days would be if I had 3 going to school from 8 a.m. to 4:20 p.m. each day. I could get all my Pinterest projects done, volunteer part time, run errands at my leisure, etc.

Thanks everyone. I've been checking the Swap/Sale forum on here and Ebay quite often. I might just buy the guide from Sonlight (looks like it is around $15), then try to get the books used or from the library.

Anyone buy it used? Or just purchase new? I've been searching for a reasonable priced used Sonlight P 3/4 but having no luck :(

I used MFW K this year with a 4.5 year old and a 5.5 year old. We just finished this week. I enjoyed it a lot. The books/stories are great. However, I found that I did add a lot to it, like extra handwriting, math, and phonics. For phonics, we love Explode the Code books here!
MFW K is a great program that is open and go. I loved the Bible principles.

We currently use MFW and have not used HOD. I have looked a lot at it and compared the two. From what I can see, HOD does cover American History in depth but does not do a geography/cultures study on its own. So, I would suggest if you wanted to add a year of MFW to do ECC.
We will be doing ECC in the fall and I am excited about learning about new cultures.
Adventures is great. We've had a fun year with it this year.

Has the HOD Little Hands to Heaven been updated since 2003? If so, how is the newer one different than the older version?

Is BJU or Abeka Math very scripted? We are using Horizons currently and the kids LOVE it. But I am not strong in math at all. One of my kids is a math natural, even taught himself Multiplication in 1st grade before it was ever taught as a concept. I have started looking into what to use for 5th, 6th, etc that I can teach correctly.

I haven't seen either of these in person. I'm trying to find a curriculum that is not too time-intensive for a 2.5 - 3 year old (starting this fall/winter). I really would like something more scheduled. It appears that HOD Little Hands to Heaven seems to be the most scheduled out of the three. However, I do enjoy reading to my kids and we enjoy lots of good books. I've not used HOD, Sonlight, or FIAR before so all are new.
Looking for Pros/Cons of each and which is most recommended for a 2.5/3 year old?

My child will turn 8 this summer. He is also reading way above his grade level. We use MFW which recommends Writing Strands for 4th Grade. However, I feel that my child is ready to start this fall (going into 3rd grade). I too would love feedback from other users!

Last summer (before we even officially began homeschooling), we purchased a BrainQuest workbook. My child enjoyed it a lot and it has A LOT of different topics covered.

I'm looking for recommendations for a Bible Study/Daily devotional book that could be used for the summer for short daily lessons. My kids will be 8, 6, 5, and 2.
We have the Jesus Storybook Bible, and used that last summer and LOVED IT. I'm just trying to locate ideas that others use and enjoy too.
If there are character traits taught too then that would be great.
How to use the iPad for homeschooling??

My DH is interested in getting our family an iPad. He says he has read they can be really useful for homeschooling. This is our 2nd year homeschooling and we have an 8 year old, 6 year old & 5 year old.
I know about getting Apps for an iPad (I do have an iPhone), but besides using Apps, I am looking for ideas of how an iPad can be useful for schooling/educational purposes. If you own one, how do you utilize it and what do your kids do with it?
Also, what are the "must have" apps for the iPad that are helpful for homeschooling? What apps do you find good for educational purposes? How often do you use the iPad?
I am trying to figure out it would really be a beneficial tool for our family or just another "toy" or distraction!! :)
thanks!
