  1. Hey everyone, my son is currently in 9th grade Connections Academy. Our problem is that there seems to be a mojor disconnect between the materila presented and the assessments. My son studys very hard, understands the material, but when it comes to the quizzes and tests - he gets so frusterated. His teachers have even admitted that many of the questions are unrelated or strangley worded. My question to K12 users, Are the assessments clear and do they match the material being taught? I am really worried about the amount of stress that he is going through.....Thanks for reading!

  2. Hi Simka,

The best way is to Google a soap recipe with easy on hand oils such as olive, palm, etc. You Tube also has a few videos for beginners which I found very helpful.

You will need lye which can be found at any home improvement store (sold as drain cleaner), a thermometer, a scale, a mold (nearly anything can be used as long as it's lined with wax paper) and some kind of fragrance. It's really fun to do, I turned my hobby into a small business: www.sea9soap.com (just to give you some ideas). Let me know if you have any questions, I'd be more than happy to help :001_smile:

  3. I voted Other because I feel you should take him to the Dr.

My 11 year old was still wetting the bed almost every night Our pediatrician told us not to worry about it. Well, on Mother's Day we wound up in the ER with my son having emergency surgery on his weenie. It turns out, his pee pee hole was too small, so urine was backing up into his kidneys, and its why he couldn't hold it all night( he had been telling our pediatrician for 3 years that his lower back ached all the time).

We took him to the ER because he doubled over screaming that his stomach hurt. In addition to his pee pee hole being too small, he had twisted testicles. He was also "small" for his age. He is now "normal to large" for his age, due to now having proper blood flow and has not wet the bed since he recovered from surgery. The urologist told us that he wishes we had brought our son in to see him much earlier, they could have diagnosed his problem and taken care of it in a non emergency situation.

Notice to Moms of boys, when they have twisted testicles they will often say its their stomach that hurts because that's how the muscles run. If we had been 30 mins later to the ER my son would have had both testicles REMOVED. They die in about 2 hours without blood flow.

    Blessings,

    Kim

Wow, thanks for the heads up! I'm glad everything turned out well for your DS.

( I also want to add. This isn't me trying to be a gawker, but I do feel that the more you know about your neighbor, the easier it is to understand them. If more people in the world took time to understand our neighbors, we could reduce a lot of fear and stereotyping.)

:iagree: Then maybe, just maybe people wouldn't mutter "terrorist" under their breath when they walked past me :001_huh:. Masjids/mosques are very welcoming to observers from other faiths :001_smile:.

  5. I'm going to go out on my own here and vote for physical therapy. My husband has his doctoral in physical therapy and says many of his patients go through chiropractors before going to physical therapy because they only feel better for the short run - no long term relief. Generally, chiropractors treat symptoms while therapists treat the cause. Again, this is my husband's own personal experience - not trying to bash any chiropractors out there :-)

  6. My two boys are currently enrolled in K12 in SC and I am seriously considering pulling them out - more for the politics than curriculum. There are a lot of hoops to jump through to meet state requirements. There is very little flexibility here, if you don't move at the expected pace - your grade drops. Grades are based on completion and study island grades. Online classes are required twice a week at specific times. Attendance of 6 hours per day must be reported daily. It is very stressful to say the least. After homeschooling on my own for 5 years, its very hard to beat to the drum of another :-) Please keep in mind, all these technicalities depend on the state.

  7. Hi Everyone! I have been told many times that being part of a charter/online school (K12, Connections, etc) makes it easier to get scholarships, get into a good college/university, etc. I'd love to hear your opinions & advice :-) Thanks! BTW, my boys are currently enrolled in K12 public charter school (first year) and I am very tempted to pull them out because of the politics and some other issues I have with the school. After homeschooling on my own for so many years it so hard to be a part of something so rigid!

  8. I've ordered glasses from http://www.zennioptical.com/home.php

They were definitely cheaper. I've ordered both single vision and progressive lenses. They've all been just fine. So far.

You have to know your pupillary distance. By law, you're supposed to be able to get this from where you ordered glasses last time. If that isn't possible, you can get someone else to measure it just by holding up a ruler. (We actually took a digital photo with the ruler in the picture because we were having difficulty with having our eyes move during the measuring.)

The only problem I've had with the glasses I've ordered is that the nosepieces are adjusted to sit too high on my face. This is easily adjusted, though. I know the optical places make a big fuss about "fitting" the glasses, but all they've ever done for me is move that nosepiece around.

With cheap frames, I've gotten single vision glasses for $8, progressive lenses for 36. I think shipping was 5.

    :iagree:
