  1. We're going to begin our homeschooling journey. The kids get out of school (parochial) in mid-May and they'll just hang out until our vacation starts June 1st. We'll officially begin school on June 11th. I'm planning on doing a full curriuculm to make sure that I can really do it and still do my job well (I have an in-home daycare.). But, I've already told the girls that since we're starting school in June, we'll begin counting our days of school then, so we can take a week off to spend with an out of town aunt when she comes to visit and a week at Grandma and Grandpa's farm--then we'll take extra long breaks at Thanksgiving and Christmas. I'm excited to June to get here!

  2. I bought the AG used (but need to get another this go around due to an unfortunate accident :001_huh:) The first time through I just had both dd's and we basically did a mix of literature and maps. I used more of the MOH maps for some reason than the SOTW but I can't remember now why that was  I chose lit based on how close the book would match up for the longest (with future lessons) but really you could do books from one or the other and they would match up just fine. We stuck closer to the MOH because that was more chronological that SOTW though. I am working right now on making a schedule again because I, like a dummy, didn't save it the first go around for some dumb reason. If you are interested when I am done I can send it to you so you can see what you think.

I would love to see your schedule when you are done! I see no sense in reinventing the wheel! :tongue_smilie:

That would be great! I see no sense in reinventing the wheel! :tongue_smilie:

  4. We use both using this schedule! After seeing how they really fit together I don't think I would ever do one or the other again! If you don't want to 'read' both you could buy audio CD's for one and the book for the other! I actually have the audio cd's and the book for MOH so I will probably have ds's listen to the cd's for that and dd read and outline from the book. We only have the SOTW book though so I will be reading that since I am combining 3 kids Ancients next year.

Wow! I really like how the two are paired together. Can you share a bit more about how you do activities and additional literature? I'm thinking I would buy MOH and use SOTW audio (b/c our library carries the CDs, but nothing for MOH). Would it be worth it to buy SOTW AG for the activities, maps and lit selections or is MOH ok for that?

  5. I'm looking for opinions from those who have used both. I was all prepared to buy SOTW (like, it's in my Amazon cart) and then picked up MOH from the library. Now I like it too and I don't know which would be better. My girls are older (9 and 11) and would do the middle and older student activities in MOH, depending on the level of difficulty and amount of time we have. I have not seen an activity guide for SOTW-I've just read the book. I've read reviews that say SOTW activities are best for k-2 students-agree/disagree?

If it matters, we would work 2 days a week for approximately 1.5-2 hours each session. Both girls are excellent readers and could definitely read SOTW independently and from what I've read in MOH, they could read it as well. I don't necessarily think they would do everything independently, but having that option occasionally would be nice.

This is our first year homeschooling, so we would be starting with the ancients.

  6. We are in a similar situation. My kids are 11, 9 and 4 and we will be hsing for the first time this summer--no moving though, thankfully for us. Both of the older girls are good students, but I don't think enough has been expected of them. DD9 is more than likely gifted, but she prefers to sit back and do nothing to get her A's. My plan is to challenge them. DS, he's a whole different deal. He still has another year to go before he would be kindergaren ags, but he's close to reading. I'll just keep following his interests and see where that takes us.

I would also take off the summer and explore your new digs. I plan on doing the girls together for history/geography and science. STOW Volume 1 for history and Apologia Astronomy for Science. They will each being doing their own level of Saxon math and we'll use the library for additional reading, art appreciation, etc. I, too, am an English major. I will be using primary sources to teach grammar and writing. Spelling will come from age appropriate lists from the internet and words from what we are studying. HTH

I look forward to hearing about your journey. Good luck with the move.

  7. Thanks for the welcome! :001_smile:

Hi! I just started full time babysitting in February. I have a 3.5 month old baby right now that I watch, and will also have her cousin- a little boy born two days ago, when his mom goes back to work. This is my second year homeschooling, and so far it's going well with just the one baby, but I don't know how it will go with two! Especially when they start moving around and needing more attention during the day. I'll sympathize with you a lot!

I'm sure it will be great (well on some days ;)). I will for sure be asking lots of questions. I have a tentative schedule worked out that uses naptime for most of our one-on-one instruction--hopefully the little ones will work with me!

    Welcome, Kristin!!! :001_smile:

It sounds like you have a good plan, but one thing you need to remember is that if you start in June, your kids may not be too receptive, because they will rightly feel that they are losing their summer vacation. Also, most kids need some time to decompress from "regular school" and adjust to the idea of homeschooling, so I would strongly suggest that although it seems most practical to start your trial homeschooling in June, it may be the worst possible time to try to get your kids to cooperate with you.

I totally support your decision to homeschool, and that's why I don't want you or your husband to have any unrealistic expectations of what you will be able to accomplish between June and the start of the school year at their regular school. I don't want you to set yourself up to fail, and making kids "do school" in the summer, when all of their friends and neighbors are off from school, may not go very smoothly for you.

Someone else suggested that you visit the other areas of this forum, and I second the suggestion. If you know what curriculum you plan to use for each child, please be sure to post about it so others can give you some idea as to how long it will take each day, whether or not you're setting your goals too high or too low, and whether or not your particular curriculum choices will work well when you're teaching multiple kids. (Some programs require almost total teacher involvement, while others may lead you to believe that your kids are going to work more independently than they'll be able to do in reality, etc.)

Please feel free to post any and all of your questions -- we're here to help you! (We were all new here once, and I know that even after all these years, I still ask stupid questions, so don't hesitate to let us know when you're feeling clueless -- we've been there, too!)

I completely agree with you on the need for a longer deschooling time. They do get out mid-May, so they will have a month, but I know they will fuss about not getting the whole summer. Right now, I'm pacifying them with the idea that they will be able to have longer breaks since they will be starting the next school year early (like a week at Thanksgiving a month at Christms, etc.)

DH is not on board with homeschooling-he's not totally against it, but he's worried that I can't do it all. This is probably the best compromise I'm going to get. School registration is July 29th, so we have to have made a decision by then.

It doesn't have to go smoothly the first month, I just need to know that I am able to meet the demands of both. We'll work out the kinks as time goes on (and I've got that month long Christmas break to look forward to :tongue_smilie:).

I'll definitely be asking lots more questions and gleaning all the knowledge I can from you guys!

  8. :seeya:I couldn't find an introductions thread, so I thought this was the most appropriate place to introduce myself.

I'm Kristin and will be beginning to homeschool my 3 kids: 11, 9 and 4. They (the 2 older kids-girls) will finish this year at the parochial school that they have always attended. We'll start mid-June as a condition of DH. He wants to make sure I can both hs and continue to operate my in-home daycare. If all goes well (as in I don't lose my mind), we'll continue to hs through this next school year. If I find that I am not able to devote enough time to the kids' education, then we will enroll them in school again for fall.

I've been lurking here for a few months and hope that as we get closer to our start date, all you wonderful parents can help guide me and give me support. I'm sure I'll need it. :001_smile:
