  1. We are using Chemistry this year with the DVD's. Mr. Harmon is the teacher, and he is fantastic. I can't imagine using the books alone without the DVD's. We also used Physical Science with the same teacher.

The only cons are: 1. It is expensive. 2. It is time consuming (45 minute lectures+ homework), 3. I have heard that the Physics teacher is not very good at all. However, I have also heard that Mr. Harmon is now teaching the Physics course, so the DVD's may become available soon.

  2. My ds is taking Pre Calculus this year at our local co-op. They use both the BJU text, and the text Chalkdust uses. I am not sure how they will be combined the two, but it will be interesting to see. The teacher began with chapter 2 of the BJU text. I purchased the DVD's and had my son use them. I thought the explanations were very clear and so far,I am very glad I have those DVD's! Chalkdust is very good too. BJU does move a bit slower, but that is not a problem with us whatsoever!

  3. I haven't read all the replies, so forgive me if I repeat. I have read quite few this summer. Here are my top five favorites:

    1. The Glass Castle ( A memoir by Jeanette Walls)

    2. The Joy Luck Club, Amy Tan

    3. The Help, Kathyrn Stockett

    4. The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency, Mcall-Smith

    5. The Chosen, Chaim Potok

All of these were great reads!!

  4. My ds is a junior at GA Tech right now majoring in Computational Media. He loves the school. The math and science classes have been very rigorous, however they have taught him to work really hard. The required humanities classes such as political science, history, etc. have been just ok, rather easy. He says he hasn't learned a thing in those classes. The math, science, and computer science classes he has taken well make up for that!

  5. We REALLY liked the Algebra 2 teacher and the class. Very good calculator instruction (which we desperately needed), got his best SAT math score after the class. Not as hard as Chalkdust (it was too hard), but harder than Teaching Textbooks (meaning they cover more concepts). BJU also covers only one thing at a time, no spiral, which is how we like it. And, they do trig. at the end. The class pretty much ran itself, she introduced the lesson, gave homework, next day, checked homework (meaning answers posted so he could check), took questions (and the questions were usually the same as what we needed), then introduced the next lesson. She was very organized and thorough.

I have heard good reviews of the geometry class, but I really did not like the book at the book fair... We did the Precalc. class...... well..... if you need the slowest paced precalc. class on the planet, then this is for you.... We actually did 3 precalc. programs in that year, bounced from BJU to TT to Chalkdust. I think after the Algebra 2, he finally "got it" and could have done Chalkdust for precalc. He didn't like the review in TT for Precalc., said that he was trying to learn a harder trig. concept, with function and log reviews in the same day. He asked to go back to BJU... If you have a year like that, don't let the college talk you into having them start with calculus..... also, BJU precalc. isn't as comprehensive, so a good start would be to take precalc. again in college for review and to get up to their speed.

    Susan,

Thanks for your replies! How was the instructor for BJU Pre Calculus? Were the explanations clear? How many homework problems per night? How were the tests ?

Also, I do own the Chalkdust Pre Calculus DVD's. Would it be easy to synchronize them for additional instruction if need be?

    THanks so much!!

  8. I married at 19 and had my son 8 months later(yes, do the math:). I am still married to the same man 21 years later and had two more kids before 25. I was in college at the time, and tried hard to finish, but, life just got in the way. Not having a college degree is one of my biggest regrets....especially now that I will most likely have to work after I am finished homeschooling. I love my life and am so grateful for how things worked out, but, I really, really, really, wish I could have had everything I have now but just have waited 3-4 years. And yes, this is a sentiment I have shared and will continue to share with my kids.
