  1. We are left with only a few dates left to take the SAT and the SAT subject tests, and I am trying to figure out the best timing.  It seems to me like it would be a lot to try to take more than two on one day.  What do you think and what has your experience been?  DS wants to take the Chemistry, Physics, and Math SAT Subject tests still.  Would it be crazy to try to take Chemistry and Physics on the same day?  That sounds less than optimal to me, but we have so few dates left.  (DS is a junior.)  Can you take a test in the first and third hours? As in, could you take the first test, take an hour break, and then take your second test during the third testing time that day? Or do you have to take them in a row?  Also, how does it work?  Do you have to say which tests you want to take in what order?  Or do they tell you in which order you have to take them?

Thanks for any guidance or advice!

  2. I was thinking about signing DS up for an SAT Essay prep class over the summer.  He hasn't taken the essay portion of the SAT yet, but plans to in the fall.  He will be a senior.  I like the looks of the Brave Writer class, but the timing conflicts with a camp where he will be away for the entire month of the class.  I don't think it is realistic to think he would work on it while he is there, as I expect it to be fairly intense.  So, any other suggestions, maybe for a self-paced class?  My main motivation for using a class and not just doing self-prep with online resources is to have someone else evaluate/grade/give feedback on the essays he writes.  I did find some online resources for SAT essay prep, but I'm not confident I would be able to evaluate his essays well, in terms of providing the right kind of feedback that is geared specifically to the SAT.  Appreciate any suggestions or advice!

  3. How did I miss this thread????  Here I've been stressing out all by myself!

Has everyone checked to make sure IDs are current? There was a sad, cautionary post some time ago about a son who showed up for a much anticipated and diligently prepped for SAT, only to be turned away because of an expired passport.  :crying:

This is like my worst nightmare.  That I will forget something really small but hugely important like this.  Luckily, we are good on the current passport.  I probably wouldn't have even thought of this!

I'm trying to think of projects to do so I won't nag a kid who is doing math homework that is due 2 weeks from now instead of practicing essays for AP Lit which is less than 2 days from now. :banghead: :banghead: :banghead:

    Same kid???

Trying to explain anything to someone in the throes of studying for AP Exams should be undertaken only after giving due consideration to the risks involved. No one on this thread accepts any responsibility for the resultant tantrums, eye-rolls, slamming of books (or doors) which may come as a result of such explanations. Proceed with caution and at your own risk.

   At least it's only 2 weeks!

  4. Lots of hard time management lessons here, on both of our parts.  I just hope we both come out of it knowing how to do better.  I wish I had structured things better to start working on goals sooner.  There always seemed to be so much time, and then suddenly, bam, spring of junior year is here, with college apps looming on the horizon.  I feel like I know so much more now, and I do feel a bit of regret for not figuring some of this stuff out sooner.  I have been crazy stressed this past week, but mostly it's me kicking myself for not being more on top of some things.  But, at the same time, I am super proud of DS.  He is an amazing kid.  All in all, he has worked hard and learned a lot.

  5. Any advice or tips for purchasing a couple of AP Physics C Exam Review books?  When did the exam last change?  The Barron's book on Amazon was from Feb 1, 2016, so I was wondering if that was still relevant.

DS is not sure if he feels prepared for the E&M portion, but feels much better about the Mechanics exam.  Is anyone else taking both?  Just one or the other?  Would love to hear the Hive's thoughts!

  6. Does anyone know if there is a website or a way to do a university or college search by map?  If you wanted to look and see what colleges are close to certain cities on a map?  I want to just look at a map that shows all the universities and colleges, so that if we are traveling, we can look and see what schools might be along the route or somewhere nearby.  I haven't had any luck yet.  Is there a way to do this on Google maps, like the way you can search for nearby hotels?

Thanks for any links or advice!

  7. Attolia, can you go back to them with that info, and tell them what you have been offered other places?  Maybe there is something additional they can do?  If they really want her, it seems like it couldn't hurt.  I have read other posters say they have gone back to a school with additional info based on the offers from other schools, and they were suddenly able to offer more aid.

  8. Keep us posted on what you find?

We need non-outgassing inasmuch as that's possible, for health reasons. No flame retardants, no VOCs.

    No foam or latex either.

We were good with flipping ours, too, but very disappointed now. :(

Both the Saatva and the Casper have foam.  Gosh, you might be stuck with the cotton/wool you have now.  Would it help if you covered it with some kind of cover?

I think I am leaning towards the Saatva after reading the reviews here and other places online now.

  9.

We both have Casper pillows and really like them, so we are considering the Casper mattress. Casper has started to sell their mattresses in West Elm stores, so if you have one near you, you can check it out.  Here's a list of locations: https://casper.com/west-elm

Thank you!  If I can hold out to get to the city, I may check them out!

  10. The Chris Loves Julia blog talks about them a bit, if you search their archives. They have both a Casper and a Leesa, and they prefer the Leesa. Everything I've heard says the Leesa is a bit softer and less foamy than the Casper, so that will probably be our next mattress.

I can't tell if the Leesa is eco-friendly.  It doesn't seem to say anything about that on their website.

  11. The Saatva and the Loom and Leaf appear to be sister brands, with the Saatva being a coil mattress and the Loom and Leaf all memory foam.  How do I know which we prefer?  They seem pretty similar in price, and both eco-friendly and made in the USA.  I just want to make a decision and order one!

  12. Yes! Same here. We not so fondly call it our rock.

We have a king and two twins, and have had them for several years. They are all very dense and ... rock-like. :(

I'm sorry you're having the same issue.

Oh, well good to know it's not just me!  I even was good about flipping them, but it didn't help.

My main concern is that I want a more non-toxic option, so no flame retardants, etc., and the Casper seemed like the easiest and cheapest choice.  I hadn't heard of the Saatva and the Leesa, so now, I have too many options again!  I do appreciate the Casper return policy.  I will have to look up what the return policy is on the others.

    Thanks for sharing, everyone!

  13. I will be checking all of the above out. :)

We have White Lotus organic - no flame retardants, really nothing but wool and cotton. Time to replace them, though.

This is exactly what we have now, and why I am so hesitant about ordering another mattress online.  It is very dense and gives me back pain if I sleep on it for more than a night or two.  I thought firm mattresses were supposed to help with back pain, but this one does not work well for me.
