  1. When you upload it, are you able to preview it and then submit it, or is there any kind of button that says, click here to confirm, or anything like that?  I am just trying to prepare myself.  It seems like they should at least give you one opportunity to confirm or cancel.  I'm sorry that happened, cave.  :grouphug:   I would try not to worry about typos and things like that, but maybe just use the optional report to submit a replacement of the things that have significant errors, like the wrong GPA.

    Good luck.

  2. I was actually thinking about this exact same thing this week!  I was trying to think about how much we would be able to afford to contribute towards college, and I was thinking my grocery bill is probably going to go way down when DS is at college!  I wasn't thinking about other things like gas and insurance, but those are good points too.

  3. Can you put the current grades on the transcript and just put an asterisk or something that it's not the official grade yet?  One college my son is applying to wants something about the senior grades by the application deadline, whether the mid-year grades are out or not.  I was thinking of just adding them to the transcript.  Does that make it not "official"?

  4. For one of the colleges to which my son is applying, I just read on their website that they require an official transcript to be submitted before the application deadline.  "This should be sent by your school online or can be mailed."

The application deadline is January 2, so ack!!  Does this mean that I need to FedEx the transcript tomorrow so it arrives in their office on Tuesday, January 2?  Or can it just be postmarked on January 2?  I thought we just needed to submit the transcript through the Common App.  (This school uses the Common App.)  Thanks for any advice!

  5. I'm so sorry.  I am super worried about this too.  This is my first time with the Common App and I am probably overthinking things, but I don't even know how to answer some of the questions.  Did you just accidentally upload the wrong documents?  Can you call the Common App folks and ask them what you should do?  I would assume most admissions offices are closed (though DS is still getting emails over the holiday break, and I see all the admissions offices posting on social media about getting apps in by January 1).

  6. I would think it would be really helpful if one is on the fence and doesn't have a clear and solid order to their choices.  I was surprised at how much visiting the schools really made an impact on DS before applying.  I have also talked to people who didn't have a great experience at one visit, but then visited again and it completely changed their mind about the school.  So, if nothing else, and it's doable within your budget of time and resources, I would think it could really help you decide where you want to be for the next four years.

  7. :grouphug:  That sounds like a really difficult challenge.  Have you asked him what he needs, what he would like to do?  Does he have any motivation or aspirations for a certain career?  Are there any technical or vocational programs that he could enroll in that would help give him some focus and direction?  Locally, we have things like architecture, drafting, electrical stuff, trades like auto or plane mechanic, etc.  What is his contact with the students you feel are a bad influence?  Is it only in school?  Or do they spend time together outside of class?  I think I would be trying to get him involved in activities that would be a positive influence on him, focus on how he needs to keep his grades up to participate in the clubs and things.  To be honest, it sounds like he just doesn't see the benefit and needs to figure out a real motivation for doing the work.  Is he bored?

  8. DS is scheduled to take the ACT tomorrow, and was really hoping to get this last testing date in for college applications.  He was scheduled to take the November SAT, and then came down with a terrible stomach flu (vomiting, etc, there was no way he could have just powered through and gone anyway).   So he signed up for the ACT for December, as all of the places where he is applying said they accept December testing dates.  But we are on the East Coast, and several testing centers in cities around us have already announced closing because of the snow forecast.  If it has to be rescheduled, will colleges accept late scores?

  9. I think it's so different for every one and every family, and the best advice is probably to listen to your child and your gut on what feels right, and adjust and shift as they grow.  It's hard with the first child!  Things change and you have to shift and adjust.  I have to trust that I know my child and that I can listen to what feels right for him and for our family at the time.  That might mean different things at different times, and shifting my perspective as they grow.  I think the key is just talking about things a lot and creating an environment where your child feels safe and loved and can come to you when they need you.  You will figure it out, I am sure!

  10. I think some internships will ask for it. Another scenario might be if you wanted to transfer. Someone could take it again in college, I guess, if they weren't happy with their high school score and knew they might need it for something like an internship or medical school. I wonder if they look at the date and only want to know how you did on it in high school, though. I feel like job interviews post-graduation would be more likely to ask for GPA and other scores like GRE, GMAT, etc.

  11. He is taking physics at the same time, so that would make three tests at once.  I think he's going to just try to prep as much as he can this week and do Math 2.  I will ask him about the scaled score, that's a good point.  I'm not sure if he did that with his practice test or not.

  12. Okay, thanks, all.  He is doing Calc BC this year.  I was encouraging him to consider taking the Math 1 if he did better on it, but it sounds like he should definitely take Math 2, as he wants to do engineering or physics.  I'm glad I asked the wise ones here!  Thanks all.

  13. DS is taking the math SAT subject test this weekend.  Do you think one is viewed better than the other?  The schools say they don't care, that they just want one or the other.  He feels like the Math 2 is better because more people score highly on the Math 1.  I am thinking it is probably better to do the one you'd get the highest score on.  He only has one more date open to take it, this Saturday, so he can't try both.  Thanks for any perspectives on this.

It would be fascinating to study what a change of, say, ten minutes per section would do to student scores - some would increase, some wouldn't.  I'm sure someone must look at this within the context of LDs but I doubt it is considered outside that.

I agree it would be really interesting to look at on a large scale.  Would it actually increase the numbers of students in the top percentiles?  Or would it not make enough of a difference over a large enough population of students?  It's a really interesting question.  I honestly don't think it's even a matter of processing speed for all students.  Some may just need to think for a few more seconds and would get the answer correct.
