  1. I'm so tired of having to worry about what nefarious things are lurking in our foods. Why can't it just be, you know, *food?*

It sounds like such a reasonable request, doesn't it?!?

I'm trying to be more careful about what we eat. But honestly, I can't keep up and I just choose not to worry about some things.... Otherwise, as I am not a master gardener by any stretch of the imagination, we'd starve.

Something interesting to keep an eye on though...

  2. Your last post clinches it for me. Being the bigger person and wanting to mend fences is nice, but these people sound awful. Be nice, be open to reconciling at a later date, but for you to go by yourself to this thing while you're worrying about your family juggling everything back home on a busy week.... It just doesn't sound good.

I would send a nice note and a gift, express that you wish you could have come and that you'd love to see them another time.

  3. I dislike the requirement to sign a statement of faith so much that I probably wouldn't even sign one that I personally wrote. What a bunch of nonsense.

See, this is kind of me too.  I don't think I should have to sign something just to hang out with other homeschoolers.  With the groups we tried to join before, I *could* sign the statement of faith and did, but that wasn't good enough once they found out we weren't regularly attending church.  :glare:

We're now members of a great church... which, ironically, didn't require us to sign a statement of faith to join....

We do have to sign a SOF for private (Christian) school... we could honestly sign it, and I know there are people from our church in the school as well, so I think it's pretty welcoming to all varieties of Christians.  I know any school comes with its own set of issues, but I think it's a better solution than any of our other options at this point.

Aimee, that's exactly what I don't want either... an unhappy, isolated kid with few social or activity outlets.  Because here, all sports and most activities in high school are done through the schools, public or private.  (We have a dual enrollment option, but they don't always make it easy.)

  4. Yep, I feel your pain.  We're also not quite the right flavor of Christian for most of the groups and co-ops around here.  The limited secular groups don't really offer co-ops or anything, and to be honest, we don't really fit with them either.  Homeschooling just isn't huge here, and people only organize into their own small groups.

Unfortunately, it's a big reason we've been considering private school for next year.  It's really hard when you can't find a peer group or community when you and your child both want one.

  5. I have moved to getting magazines almost exclusively in digital format on my iPad.  It's easier, and I don't have a huge stack of magazines to get rid of later.  As to what I get....

Mental Floss, Better Homes & Gardens, Midwest Living, Prevention... seems like there's a couple others I'm leaving out.

  6. Ellen, I can relate somewhat... married to an IT engineer, and he's just not the type to have long, philosophical discussions, LOL!  And my son would rather be playing Minecraft than having adventures with Mom these days...  :001_rolleyes:

It would be great if we all lived closer...

Tibbie, I just found that blog a couple days ago... no idea how I hadn't seen it before!  I think it's great how much you've all been able to put into it.  I might PM you.  :)

As for my interests... I read a lot, have some internet groups (like the Hive!) where I spend a good bit of time, and I like getting together with friends but we mostly do it as families at this point.  As DS is getting older and a bit more independent, I really have been feeling the need to reconnect with some old friends and seek out new opportunities.  I'm just not sure yet what they will be!!

  7. We had around 275.  But we both came from the same small-ish town and knew almost everyone between our two families... we sent just over 300 invitations, I think.

  8. Welcome, Pink and Green!!  :)

Jane, those cupcakes look divine.  Wouldn't it be lovely if we could all get together for cupcakes and conversation?  (And a big hug right back to you as well... I think we all need it this week.)

I did go back and read page 2, and at least now I know why Jaffa cakes were brought into the conversation, LOL!! (Have fun on your trip, Violet!!)

Heather... goodness, immunity to one version and potential for a worse case of three more?  I'm so sorry honey, I hope you're able to keep those mosquitoes far away!!  (I suppose we're fortunate that ours here may "only" transmit West Nile virus?!?)

We don't do movies in theaters anymore either, for the most part.  They're loud and overwhelming, and I'm enough of a homebody that I'd rather wait and see it at home.  Perhaps it makes me a curmudgeon, but I really don't want to pay a large sum of money to hear other people chatting through the movie and grit my teeth while the person behind me continually kicks my seat!  :D

  9. I started with "The Man Who Wasn't Darwin" in this issue.  (Great read, by the way!)

I tried the tactic of reading the second paragraph... it didn't really work in this one because the second is a continuation of the first and refers back to it.  The intro starts off with a description of the island of Ternate, which is the setting where this story begins.  It paints a nice picture.

  10. Wow... posting, finding the feature, sharing it with others... I accomplished even more than I thought today!!  ;)

I just shared my joy with DH.  He doesn't seem very impressed.  :glare:

At least now he doesn't have to wonder what I do all day....

  11. It's amazing, I always used to think shampoos were mostly alike..... Not.At.All.

I have been trying new drinks... A lot of lemon water, and found a new rum I like mixing with things!

But also, a new fizzy drink.... Diet Hansens Black Cherry. Tasty!
