At what point, or grade earned, do you make your child redo a math lesson. Obviously when dd scored a 67% recently on a lesson we went back and went over it. She then scored a 90% so we moved on. But she's scored 80-85% lately and I've let her move on with the lessons. Although sometimes when I go over the problems with her she knows the answers, so I think maybe she just hurries through and makes silly mistakes.
I'm just curious if she should be getting 95-100% before we move on.

You've already gotten answers to your questions, but since I think I know which "troll" thread you're thinking of, and because if I'm right, I was one of the people who called the poster out as a troll, I thought I'd be sure to let you know that I definitely don't view you as a troll at all. Actually, you seem very nice, and I hope to get to know you better as you start posting to more threads. :001_smile:
The reason I didn't suspect you of being a troll is mainly because you're participating in threads without looking for a battle, you're posting "normal" newbie questions and comments (like the ones in this thread,) and mainly because your very first post to the forum wasn't some sort of "I thought this would make an excellent discussion topic" kind of thing, where you told a story that sounded fake (and potentially debate-worthy) about your too-perfect-to-be-real child, and never once mentioned anything about homeschooling.
Anyway, welcome to the forum!!!
Thanks for clarifying! That was the thread I was referring to. :001_smile: I was just thrown off guard and worried about future posts I might make. I assure you I'm normal, don't like controversy, and have no idea what I'm doing with this homeschooling thing!
Thanks for the welcomes (I'm sure that's not a word)!

It's gorgeous!! The kids have been playing outside all afternoon and we went to the zoo yesterday.

Thanks for answering my questions!
Oh, yes! I've searched into the wee hours of the night! There is so much information here. It's been so helpful as I try to piece together dd's next school year.

I've been reading the boards for about three weeks now, learning as much as possible about hs'ing and TWTM. I'm hoping to start posting more and interacting with everyone, but I have two random questions.
I was reading the thread where people were assuming the op was a troll...what exactly does that mean and what would be their purpose in posting a question if they didn't really want an answer?
What does pass the bean dip mean?
I feel stupid asking these questions, but curiosity has the best of me. :)

I know next to nothing compared to the others here, but when I pulled my dd from school in 6th grade (this year) I used R&S 5. We have been able to skim through some chapters, but I'm very glad we started where we did because it builds up with sentence diagramming (which she knew nothing about).

He took the placement tests from TT and placed in Algebra. I had him do the Pre-Algebra samples and he said, "These are too easy" and got 100% on all of them.
So far he is on lesson 42 with Algebra and is getting somewhere around an 85%.
It is hard to know with him whether it is "I don't WANT to" or "I can't." He often gets frustrated and because he has Asperger's doesn't handle frustration well. That is a big part of this IMO.

He definitely doesn't need to take prealgebra if he scored 100% on the placement test. I'd back up and have him redo the trouble lessons in algebra. That's what I did with DD this year in algebra. If she scored less than 90% we'd back up and go over the lesson (or even supplement with online stuff) before proceeding.

No. I don't think one needs a degree to teach the word of God.
Ditto.

I put together a mammal study for my kids this year. You can see it here. I don't have many hands-on projects listed unless you want to count drawing different species of animals, but I do have several DVDs, Youtube videos, and living books listed. Hope it helps.
Wow! Thanks for that! I'll look it all over once the kiddos are in bed.

I'm using Apologia Zoology 3 Land Animals with my 12 year old and neither of us are very pleased with it. Does anyone have any ideas for cheap ways to supplement? Maybe some hands-on activities or projects/experiments? I'd hate to buy a whole new curriculum. TIA

I won't let DD12 get one, either, since she's...well, 12! And she thinks I'm crazy. Huh? For not lying?

I did this with DD11. We were only able to stay away for one night (and that was a very short day beforehand) b/c I had an 8 month old at the time. I would definitely recommend 2 nights, otherwise you'll just be cramming information in and not having as much fun.
We went to the hotel in the afternoon and started the discussions and cds, and then DH came to our hotel and picked us up to take us out for dinner. We dressed up and he had a rose for her, treated her like a real lady by opening doors and pulling her chair out, etc. Then after dinner he presented her with a purity ring, then her and I went back to the hotel for the night.
It's definitely a great time and very much worth it.
