  1. I'm seriously considering Memoria Press's Kindergarten Curriculum (the full thing) for my 5-year-old for next year. I haven't heard a whole lot about it though-- anyone out there with experience with it that can tell me pros & cons? I like that its scheduled out and I really like the reading portion from what I've seen online, but I haven't actually looked at any of it in person...

  2. I am in the process of deciding what reading program to use for my kindergartener this fall. I have OPGTR and I like the order of it, but I need something a little more hands-on, a little more planned out. I have been printing games & activities things from the internet but I really just need more direction. She knows all her consonant sounds & short vowels, she's blending pretty well but I just don't know where to go from here. The 2 I keep going back to are All About Reading & IEW's PAL program. I don't know if I can stomach the cost of AAR so I'm leaning toward IEW now. If you have used it, what are your thoughts? She doesn't have great handwriting yet, so I would probably get the writing program too.

  3. ...yes today was yesterday's tomorrow. Got it?

Does your child know the days of the week? If so i saw this chart with the days of the week listed across the top with a box under each day. The person made up three cards with the words today yesterday and tomorrow. Each day the child would move the cards to their new spots (they used Velcro). So on Monday you would say and point to" today is Monday, yesterday was Sunday and tomorrow is Tuesday. I believe there was a night scene picture in between the days to emphasize that night changes what day it is. It's just a visual indicator of how the words relate to each other and how they "move". I hope that was clear enough.

I don't remember where I saw it and I don't know we'll it works. I've been meaning to make such a chart but haven't gotten around to it.

Is this what you're talking about? http://www.confessionsofahomeschooler.com/blog/2010/04/calendar-time-2.html

We did that one for a little while but "retired" it for a little bit before it got old & repetitive. We may get it back out again, though!

  4. I am having a hard time getting my 4-year-old to understand the concepts of "yesterday" "tomorrow" "last week" "next month", etc. Anyone have any clever ways of teaching all this or is it just something she'll get in a year or so? She can memorize the days of the week but that doesn't mean much to her!

  5. I'd think they might be too hard for a 3-year-old. I use it with my 4 year old who already knows most of her letter sounds, so it is kind of review for her. BUT It has a lot more handwriting than I thought it would, yet it doesn't really teach how to form the letters well. So that part is hard for my dd. I use it along with other handwriting program so she can learn to write the letter at the same time as she learns the sound.

  6. I am looking into curriculum for my soon-to-be kindergartner. We are planning to do Classical Conversations, and I'm pretty sure they recommend Writing Road to reading for reading instruction, but in looking at IEW PAL, I think I might like that better. I've only looked at both of them online, so I've never actually seen them in person, so if you've had any experience with them, let me know the pros & cons. (I also have OPGTR, if that might be better than either one?)

  7. My daughter (4.5 yrs.) can write SOME of her letters, mostly only capitals, but none very well. I want to buy HWT but I'm wondering if I should start her in the Preschool level, or Kindergarten level. I've looked at the Preschool & it appears to be mostly pre-writing and all capitals-- I think it might be too easy on her? I don't really want to spend money on both...

  8. I have seen a lot of science posts lately, but I wanted to add my own-- does anyone have any opinions on the God's Design For... Science series? I like that it can be used with 1st through 8th graders and I like that it is decidedly Christian, but it doesn't look like it includes a lot of experiments or memorization?

  9. I have heard that you can use the TM to make your own "wooden" pieces, out of craft foam or some other material-- is that true, or do I NEED the wooden pieces. They seem so expensive. And couldn't I use any old chalkboard or dry erase board or does it need to be a specific size?

  10. All this was helpful. I don't want to push my dd, I'm just a little confused as to whether it's easier to teach reading first or handwriting first, or simultaneously... Seems like from what I'm reading, it's best to just start with the reading, and she really does seem ready to start on that! But it seems like a lot of her little friends (who are just in daycare, not being homeschooled) already know how to write their letters at 3 1/2 or 4. Perhaps I need to stop comparing! I probably will get the HWT & some of the manipulatives and just go her pace.

  11. I'd really like to start HWOT with my 3.5 year old this summer. She is just about ready to start reading but we still need a little work on beginning consonant sounds. I read somewhere that HWOT does provide a little light phonics instruction, is this true? Also, how long would it take us to go through the Pre-K HWOT book? Would it be possible to finish it all in a few months, also using it as an intro. to reading (along with other letter of the week activities, etc.), or is it really a year-long curriculum? I guess my goal is to have her writing all the letters and a good deal of the way through OPGTR by the time she's 5.

  12. Has anyone used Easy Classical.com? I am really interested to know if their schedules are any good? I already plan to use the books they suggest for curriculum, so I'm wondering if their plan would make it easier?

  13. I kind of want to do Handwriting along with beginning sounds instruction using the first 26 lessons in OPGTR, but most Handwriting programs teach the letters out of order. Looking through OPGTR it seems like I'd just have to change up the "Consonant Rhyme" to use the letters we've covered if I do them out of order. Has anyone else tried this? Or is it even a good idea to try to teach Handwriting at the same time?

  14. I asked this before, I think, but I'm just trying to clear everything up before I buy anything.

If I use Singapore Earlybird Math, do I need the Teacher's Guide or can I get just the workbook & the textbook? I really wish I could get my hands on these to actually look at them, but alas, we don't live anywhere near any kind of Homeschool store or bookstore.

  15. The Textbook is softcover non-consumable, and the Activity Book is a workbook for the student to write in and includes cut-&-paste activities. I believe the two books were designed to go together, where you do a lesson together in the Textbook and then do a corresponding exercise in the Activity Book.

I got that part, but then there was something totally separate, the Essential Math books. I didn't know if they were the same thing as the Activity Book.
