  1. I personally like the history progression of HUFI better than that of AO. I like the way it starts with Ancients (and I add SOTW for extra reading as well). I also like some of the additional history reading that HUFI suggests and the way HUFI has a year of Eastern Hemisphere cultures. But, of course, that is just a personal preference.

There is actually a lot that is similar between the two, but the history progression is the clincher for me.

    :iagree:

I use mostly HUFI, with a splash of AO selections, and a few "custom" selections that I've chosen. Remember... HUFI only goes through Year 6, then you switch to AO.

I second the recommendation of reading Planning Your CM Education.

  2. For my two youngest, around 45 mins to 1 hour.

For my two middle ones, around 1.5 to 2 hours.

For my two oldest dc, around 3 to 4 hours.

In addition to this, all kids have an hour of group time at the very start of the school day, and a 30-minute "lunchtime lesson". And the oldest four are required to read independently for at least an hour in the afternoon.

We do the bulk of out school in the morning, but sometimes we do spill over into the afternoon.

  3. Sunday through Thursday - normal (Tuesday is our co-op day but that only affects our eldest child)

Friday - a lighter/ fun day, but we still do get a fait amount done

Saturday - off for the Sabbath

We like this schedule. It works for us. Schooling six days a week allows us to have free afternoons, and to get back on track more easily after a vacation or such.

  4. I have a niece in 4th grade and a nephew in 8th, both at ps. Both of their schools have a "good behavior party" every quarter and a "good grades party" every quarter. Additionally my nephew's middle school has a quarterly "zero tardy party" for kids who were on time to all of their classes.

I don't support this type of incentive system at all. The kids are learning to get good grades NOT because it will go far in life, open many more opportunities up to them, and help them go to a great college if they choose that path, but because they'll get a party for it. This is completely the wrong message to be sending, IMO, and I don't understand why the teachers even promote these types of extrinsic incentives, let alone expect them to really work. I sincerely doubt that a student who is exhibiting unacceptable brhavior, or who has absymal grades, or who is consistently tardy, is suddenly going to become a "perfect student" merely because they'll get a 45-minute party.

  5. I'm considering various science programs for next year and stumbled across Mr. Q. It seems worth looking in to, but I'm having trouble figuring out the website. Can someone please explain the Mr. Q program to me, and, if you can, tell whether or not you liked it?

    Thanks very much.
