  1. My 9th grade son is almost finished with Saxon Algebra 1. He uses Saxon Teacher with it. He has a B. It just takes him so long to do each lesson, 2 hours or more, but he needs to do every problem to retain the material. I have Jacob's Geometry but am considering switching him to Teaching Textbooks beginning with Geometry. I have 5 children to teach and a 1 year old and I need math to be totally independant for them. I also have 2 dyslexic sons and wonder if Saxon Algebra will be too difficult for them. Any advice is appreciated.

  2. What about the other portions of MFW? Is she enjoying the activities, read alouds, etc? How old is she? If she can already read, you might turn the reading lessons into spelling lessons. Check at the MFW board, it seems like there are suggestions for doing K with a child who is already reading. board.mfwbooks.com

You could also post your question on MFW board as well.

The MFW K archive has suggestions for those who are already reading or modifying it if it is too easy.

  3. My 8th grader is currently in season 3 of Analytical Grammar. He has not retained what he did in seasons 1-2. Plus he hates it. I am thinking of putting him in Hake Grammar but don't know which book to get. Should I put him in the 8th grade book or 7th. He has been exposed to gerunds, participial phrases, and infinitives with AG but needs a review. Please explain the difference between the 2 books.

  4. Talk to me about MFW. This was the direction we were heading before we landed in Classical Conversations. The simplicity of focusing on Bible, history, and literature with me and then outsourcing for language, math, and science is appealing to me. Is there enough guidance that you feel like you can grade fairly? Are you studying alongside, discussing with her? How does that work for you?

I spent the first week sitting right beside him, walking him through the lesson plans, and explaining what I expected from him. After that he just read the plan for the day and did it. I have him come tell me when he completes one subject and tell me what he is doing next. I look over his work a few times per week to make sure he is doing it. We discuss the material at least once per week. He does need help with writing so I sit down with him for that. MFW gives instructions on how to grade the various subjects and has already assigned credits. The grading is not difficult to do. I am having my sister, a fabulous writer, grade his papers.

  5. I went ahead and bought Hake/Saxon Grammar and Writing 5 for dd9, who will be finished with FLL4 in a few short weeks. :001_smile: I showed her samples of GWG, VIE, Shurley, and Hake, and she decided that Hake was the most like FLL. She's a grammar nerd and was disappointed that ALL will not be available. Because she is still in 4th grade, I will probably work through the lessons with her as I do with FLL4. Then she can do the review on her own. She's excited to give it a try.

    Hake looks good!

My ds is in 6th grade. He is currently doing the 15 week sample of ALL. He is in week 5. Do you think he should finish the sample or go ahead and switch to Hake? I'm not sure whether to put him in the 5th or 6th grade book. Also do you do the writing exercises if you are using WWS? BTW He finds ALL challenging. We have to go slowly with it but he is doing well.

  6. I think we are going to finish using the ALL sample and then move to Analytical Grammar. Still thinking about it though. Another that I'm considering is the Saxon/Hake grammar program.

I am considering AG as well. I think ds may need some review of usage, capitalization, puctuation etc since AG doesn't cover that until season 3. Any suggestions for this that is free or cheap?

  7. Barton is much slower than AAS and in a completely different sequence.

What level is he in in AAS? Level 1 of All About Reading is coming out next month. That would complement AAS very well.

Sorry, I just read that he is isn AAS 2. AAR Level 1 might be too easy. I would email All About Learning Press. They have been very helpful. I remember reading somewhere on their site that you could use AAS for phonics.

  8. I didn't think I could do it this year with a 9th grader, 8th grader, 6th and 4th grade dyslexic dc, K'er and 8 month old!

But it is working! My ninth grader is independant. He is doing My Father's World which has lesson plans written directly to him.

8th grader mostly independant. I work with him about 30 minutes per day.

6th and 4th graders require most of my time. I write everyone's daily assignments on a white marker board. When the board is clean, they can have free time. This greatly helps me to know at a glance how much everyone has accomplished and what I have to do with each one.

  9. I've used both IEW and WWE WWS. They are similar. A lot of it has to do with different formats. WWS is written instruction, IEW is dvd. My boys love the dvd lessons. They wrote much better for Mr. Pudewa than for me. But they are doing well with WWS also.

I think WWS is more throrough and systematic in teaching outlining.

Style is treated a little differently in each one but it is taught in both.

I really like how Mr. Pudewa teaches the various sentence openers and how to structure paragraphs with a topic and clincher. It is very concrete and not difficult for reluctant writers to understand. My dc have only done 2 weeks of WWS but I am very pleased with the program so far.
