  1. So my plan was to get  a passport as my daughter will be going to Europe this summer and want to be able to get there in the very slim chance that there is an emergency. I went to pull out by birth certificate and realized that I only had the hospital record. So I  ordered a birth certificate from the records office and found to my surprise that my first name is spelled differently (one letter missing at the end) from how I have always spelled it. I asked my mom about it and she said she added the "e" when I was 3 or 4  because she thought it looked better  :001_smile: . My drivers license and social security card, and really, everything else in my life has the "e" at the end.

So my question, if you made if this far, can I get a passport that has the spelling with the "e" at the end so that everything matches? Or do I need to do some kind of official name change?

Any advice or pointing in a good directions would be most appreciated

    Thanks,

    Carole (with an e)

  2. We watched Sing Street on netflix last night. I thought it was fun and sweet.  It is set in Dublin in the mid-1980's. I really enjoyed it- the music, the hair, the make-up.- all brought back my teen-age years!

  3. In 2014 my word was Confidence- I would say this worked- ultimately I went back to school, got my teaching credential and am now teaching. Things I had not previously considered and in the past would have had all kinds of excuses for not doing.

I can't remember my 2015 or 2016 words- I think because I was so focused on school and my first year teaching.

For 2017 my word is Appreciate- appreciate those around me, the beauty I live in, etc.

Kinda funny-one year I chose the word "initiative" for my son.  It didn't work.

  4. Techwife- I am so sorry for your loss.

Pinkmint-Yes, I am sitting on the Christmas shopping sidelines. Most years we have been able to somehow pull some nice gifts together for the kids, but not this year.

We have reframed it as "small Christmas" ( my kids are teens, adults). Christmas lists were fun to make as everyone had to think of small (inexpensive) things that they wanted, we are getting a small tree, and doing some free community events.

I must say, once I accepted that this is the way this Christmas is going to be I have been really enjoying sitting on the Christmas shopping sidelines. Turns out I don't miss it!!

  5. I am a teacher in CA- My understanding is that if we break our contract the school district could basically put a "block" on our credential so that we can't be hired until our contract term is up. It is at the discretion of the school district whether they do this or not. '

I don't have personal experience and have never really needed to know,so U could be wrong, but that is my understanding.

And good luck with your daughter! These things are so hard!

  6. Hi,

My son is in 11th grade and is not particularly academic. Most likely going to cc when he graduates or (what he would prefer) straight to work.

I am looking for a one semester US Govt. course. He is not a quick reader but enjoys discussions of topics and has great insight and understanding of issues. Interesting readings and discussion ideas would be a plus, but I really just need to check off the box.

Also I am looking for a physics course for him. This is an area of interest for him, but I have very little knowledge. Looking for something interesting and doable. Again, does not really need to be college prep level. I have looked at Oak Meadow and that is a possibility, but it is pretty pricey!

Thanks in advance for your help. I am feeling really stymied!

  7. Sounds like you like movies- here is a map of film locations in the area http://filmhumboldtdelnorte.org/mapofthemovies

If you are heading north to see the elk you can stop and rent paddleboards or kayaks at Stone Lagoon  http://www.kayakzak.com/.

I agree with Ferndale for quaintness, Samoa Cookhouse and Madaket tour of the bay for local color.

There are several breweries if you like beer- Lost Coast Brewery is in Eureka, Mad River Brewing is about 20 minutes east in Blue Lake, and Six Rivers Brewery is about 20 minutes north of Eureka in McKinleyville- which would be about 20 minutes north of Eureka and on your way to or from seeing the elk.

Lots of great hikes in the area, a small zoo in Eureka next to a nice park, and some nice beaches as well- though the water is cold!!!

And yes, nice cool summer weather

    Enjoy your visit!!

ETA- oh, I just reread your post and it looks like you want to avoid the elk! Well they are further north than Eureka- but they are kinda cool!!

  8. My kids are 14 and 16. I went back to school 2 years ago and have worked full-time this past year. I very much miss the kids/home/life/way of doing things that we had. It certainly wasn't perfect, and there are certainly good things about working. But i miss the cozy home life that we had.
