We used Moving Beyond the Page's poetry unit last year and loved it. We had our own little coffee house as a final project. I listed it for sale a while ago, but no one bought it, so I still have it. PM me if you are interested!

DD10 is using Vocabulary Packets right now to learn some Greek and Latin roots and is retaining a lot!

My son wants to get an iPod Touch with money from allowance, chores, gifts, etc. I am completely inexperienced with any such devices.
The new 5th Generation ones which he is looking at (at least up 16GB) apparently can only take pictures when the screen is pointed toward the thing you want to photograph, so that you would not be able to see what you are photographing for centering it, focus, etc.--he seems to think this would be fine. I am dubious--how does this work out in practice for photographs or motion films if they will take films? My daughter just saved up and got the 32g just because she wanted the rear camera.
And we do not know if he would be able to use a 5th Generation one for much since neither our computer nor the one at the library seem to be compatible with it. ???
I am thinking he should maybe be looking at the 4th Generation ones still available, but am not sure about the problems with doing that. My other daughter still has her 4th gen ipod that she bought two years ago. It can still do everything she wants, but she admits that the 5th gen is much nicer!
Also can one print out photographs from any of these in some way later? DD12 says you can print to a wireless printer, if you have one.
Does anyone have experience using iPod touch as a book reader device, and if so how has that worked out? DD12 would not recommend it because it is too small. She gets a headache.
In theory apparently they can play movies, but it seems like the screen would be awfully small for that. ???? However, she does not have a problem watching videos.
Can the wireless part be turned on and off, and if so, is it easy or hard to do that? Easy
How does the recharging work? Including if it is not compatible with home computer, how would it get recharged? Wall charger or car charger. You can get them everywhere these days.
What about "drop and spill" type insurance? Is it helpful, or not? Any other things that should be gotten also like screen protectors or case or stand? Just a good case and a screen protector.
Any other thoughts? DD12 says the camera is really bad on the 4th gen, but ten times better on the 5th gen. :)
TiA from total newbie in this type of electronics.
FYI....DD10 bought her 5th gen refurbished on the Apple website for a much lower cost. It comes with the same Apple warranty, new battery, new ear buds, etc.

We are doing a 12-week chemistry unit right now that includes: McHenry's The Elements, The Mystery of the Periodic Table, Periodic Quest board game, and Tiner's Exploring the World of Chemistry.
This seems to be a good mix with great retention from my girls. I do not think you need to go element by element. By simply learning about chemistry, they will become familiar with the various elements.

The best read aloud we ever did was The Giver and we read it when my girls were 9 and 11. It was our first foray into dystopian literature and a "the world is not always sunshine" theme. My girls always begged to do read aloud and towards the end, we scrapped other school plans and finished it in three hours. My voice was really hoarse after that!

Awesome brag!

Well, DD12 is a girly girl, but last year, DD10 wore black leggings with snowflakes on them and a silver shimmery tunic that went to mid-thigh. She refuses to put on a dress, so this was a nice compromise.

DD 12 worked through SM 3-6 and loved using bar models, but DD10 is in MM5b and bar models totally confuse her. She will sometimes draw a different type of diagram, but mostly just knows how to solve the problem. She says she can "see it in her head." So, I think that one method will not fit for every kid, just like a certain curriculum will not fit every kid.

No words, just :grouphug: .

DD10 will be beginning Dolciani Pre-algebra after Christmas. She has used MM and it has worked well for her. She did not do well with Singapore because of the graphics/cartoons on the pages, not the actual math. She likes clean, uncluttered pages.

Anyone? How about a toaster oven?
-
Well, our toaster died this morning, after months of taking longer and longer to toast. I have yet to find a toaster that lasts for more than a few years and it just seems so wasteful to me. Does anyone have a quality toaster that has lasted?
Thanks!
ETA: Four-slicer or larger, please.

Cast iron here, as well. If your cast iron pan is not well seasoned and the eggs are sticking a bit, put some salt on the bottom and scrub with a wire or plastic scrubbie.

My advice is to read a bit about Mendel because of his historical importance, then move on to something most 12 year olds are interested in: themselves.
 True!

We were studying Mendel, his peas, and Punnett squares yesterday and DD12 was getting frustrated. Not about the actual lesson, but how do they know what genes that each pea has, or each person? How do we know it is Bb or BB?
So, I told her to make it through the lesson and I will ask the Hive for suggestions about genetic resources that go more in-depth. She is very bright, mathematically and scientifically minded, and would certainly understand a high school or even college resource, but she is emotionally a 12-year-old girl. So, something that presents information in a fun way, but not dumbed-down would be perfect for her.
Suggestions?
TIA!!

Each of my kids had their own special song that I would sing to them before every nap/sleep time from day one. It was their "signal" that it was time to sleep. I never nursed or rocked them to sleep, but would let them get drowsy, then sing their song, then lay them down. They are now 10 and 12 and I STILL sing their special song to them most nights. They do not need it anymore, but it is our special thing!
ETA: They are both good sleepers.

I actually live in northern NH, but Maine is 900 feet out my back door and if my kids were in PS, they would go to school in Maine, not NH. The Bangor area is run down with not much to do, unless you like to snowmobile. We closer to Western Maine and the lakes and mountains...a truly beautiful area. However, Portland is wonderful and I would love to live there if it were not in Maine, LOL. The city itself is clean with a great waterfront area, a nice retail area, and beautiful beaches. However, just an FYI that Maine has one of the highest state income taxes in the country and there are more people on welfare in Maine than there are workers. It is a tough economy.
As for homeschooling, both areas have active HS communities and homeschooling is fairly easy in Maine.
Good luck in your search!

Hello,
I know that most people on this board recommend the 1985 or 1988 editions of Dolciani Prealgebra, but I am having a hard time finding one for less than $80. However, I can find the 1981-New Edition and the 1992 editions for a lot less. Can anyone tell me if these versions are similar to the 80s versions or why they are sub-standard?
Also, are there answers in the back for the 1981 or 1992 editions?
Thank you for your help!

DD12 just came down from her bedroom while I was watching this video and here was our conversation:
DD: Oh, I have seen this video before.
Me: (puzzled at why my 12-year-old is watching videos about advanced physics) Oh, you have?
DD: Ya, I watched it at Joy's house.
Me: Oh, you did? Do you know what it is about?
DD: The String Theory.
Me: (shocked) Right. Do you know what the String Theory is?
DD: It has something to do with space.
Me: Right.
Huh. This is from the girl who just last week asked me to get her some books that explain Einstein's Theories in terms she could understand. I guess I will be watching this post!!

That's awesome. Good for you!

Hello,
A local market is selling peaches at a really great price and I have preserved (freezing, canning) many things in the past, but not peaches. I readily admit to being somewhat lazy, so I wonder of any of you know a way to preserve peaches without peeling them first? I am not willing to spend time peeling them, even with the boiling water method.
I do have the fruit strainer attachment for my Kitchen-Aid. Could I use that to make "peach-sauce" or something? Just cut them up, throw them in freezer bags for smoothies?
TIA!

Hello,
Just wanted to say thank you to whoever recommended this book. I was searching around these forums one day and came across a thread that mentioned this DK Art book (I can't even remember if it was an art-specific thread), but I looked it up and I LOVE it! It is exactly what I have been looking for!
Thank you!
