  1. Good morning!

I am looking for something short (2-4 weeks) for a 4th and 6th grader that includes reading and briefly analyzing some poems, learning a few poetic devices such as rhyme scheme and meter, and then guiding them through writing some of their own poems in different forms. Basically, a nice introduction to poetry would be perfect.

I have found units on writing poetry or analyzing poetry, but nothing all in one package. Does anyone know of something like this? Currclick, perhaps?

    TIA!!

  2. Uuuuuummmmmmmmmmmmm........never mind. I wasn't trying to blame anyone (or anything), or ask advice about how to make her "behave." Nobody acts perfectly all the time (including me!) and this just happens to be a time that I do not like to see. DD11 is a good, respectful kid most of the time.

I was just looking for a little chat on the Chat Board for a Wednesday morning. No more comments needed. Let's just let this one get buried :thumbup1: shall we? Sorry for any controversy! LOL!

  3. ....does not go to public school.

She skis on the local middle school ski team and after being around a large group of kids (who all seem to be very nice) for 3-4 hours, she turns into a snide, demanding child. It takes her about 20 minutes to become my sweet girl again. She absolutely loves skiing and being around the other kids, so of course she can continue, but how do parents deal with the decompression every single day ?

    Anyone else have this experience?

  4. I have read so many threads about people loving SS. DD11 is not a great speller, to say the least. She is an avid reader and probably reads way above grade level, but I have never had her officially tested. She is also very good in math. But, she struggles so much with spelling! When she spells words incorrectly, I ask if if it "looks right" and she does not know. She reads very quickly, as well, but seems to have good comprehension, so I wonder if that is part of the issue.

So, anyone here not have success with SS for this type of child?

    TIA!!

  5. We read The Giver as a read aloud this past fall with DD11 and DD9. We had totally ditch school plans one day to finish the final 1/3 of the book. They LOVED it, as did I. Great discussions ensued. Neither girl was traumatized, but we do not tend to sheild our girls from life and human nature. DH was active duty Army, so they know all about war, point of view of the enemy, etc. If your DC are more innocent, you may want to wait until they are 12 or 13.

Off to watch the link to the video!

  6. Grade 4 MM (the complete curriculum) was recently re-aligned and I had only purchased 4A. I wrote to Maria asking what I should do about purchasing 4B. She promptly emailed me links for the entire Grade 3 and the new 4A so that I can fill in any gaps. Now that is great customer service! Just thought you might want to know!

  7. Sigh....I am honestly at a loss on how to deal with this. She is so young! We never had a rule of you cannot have a boyfriend until whatever age because I honestly thought she was nowhere near this. Guess I was wrong. She said that having a boyfriend means that you go to dances together (she attends the middle school dances with her PS friends).

So, what is a mom to do? Ban the boyfriend? Tell her she is too young? Let and it go?

    HELP!!!!!!

  8. I help run the fundraising for DD's gymnastics team. Here are a few of our fundraisers and what we made:

    1. Pizza night/basket raffle-- A local pizza place donated $1 for each pizza sold and we did a Thanksgiving basket raffle. Team parents bought stuff to fill the baskets (kitchen utensils, canned goods, linens, nothing too expensive). We made about $900 total.

    2. Wreath sales--A BIG money maker. We made about $1600 with 16 families selling 6 wreaths each. PM me if you want the name of the company. The wreaths were beautiful.

    3. 50/50 raffle at home meets--you could do this for your home tournament, too.

    4. American Girls doll raffle-- The Girl of the Year last year happened to be a gymnast, so we bought one and each family sold at least 6 raffle tickets (I think they were $5-10). We made $1400.

We have done more....gymnastics is expensive, LOL. PM me if you want more ideas!
