  1. Does anyone here use the Weaver curriculum? I am looking into starting it with my 4, 6 and 13 yr olds. I am wondering about the 7th-12th grade supplement. Does it flow well with the volume? Im also wondering about the other extras that are available - the literature, grammar, spelling, and handwriting books that are sold. Are those good to use, or does it create to much work? Another question I was thinking of was, should I do the Vol 1 with my youngest (he will be 5 in Oct and we havent really done school yet) or should I do Interlock with him? Will that mesh well with the Vol 1? Thanks!!

  2. Is there a curriculum that would actually work for K and 2nd grade? My boys are going to be 5 & 7 in the fall. My 4 yr old hasn't been ready to do any kind of school, or even sit still. But I think he is finally ready. Im just not sure if it is a good idea to try to teach those age ranges together or not.

  3. HI! I have been hs'ing 4 years and now my youngest two are going to be 5 & 7, and my oldest that I am hs'ing will be in 8th. I have never hs'ing them all together because they youngest were too young. Well the youngest was too young to even sit still until recently, lol. I am now wondering if it is possibly to do hs with them all together. Is it something that can really work with such a wide age range? Is it even a good idea? I have looked into programs such as Tapestry of Grace and Biblioplan and Im wondering if those programs really work for all ages together. Last year we did Heart of Dakota, which I liked, but I felt I could only concentrate on my 1st grader and didn't have much time for my older kids. I really want to feel like we can be together as a family during school. The other thing I thought of was more of a unit study approach. Thanks!

  4. Thank you :)

I am not actually sure what language he is doing. He just started with the start now button I think, lol. I will have to ask him if he even knows.

I was worried the Coursera or Udaicty might be pretty hard. I know they could just try some and see what they like, but that can get frustrating too.

  5. I am trying to pick a programming or coding class as an elective for my 7th and 9th graders. I just started searching and realized there are so many that are free! I am totally lost, lol. How do I know which ones are the best or what I should pick? I found Kahn Academy, Code Academy (same thing?) Scratch, Learn Street, and a couple more I think. Help!

  6. I am looking around at some free options for my 9th grader to take as an elective. I have found a ton of computer science classes (programming and coding) and I have no idea which are good. I was wondering if anyone knows if I can count them as credits for high school? Or which are the best to use? I found Kahn Academy, Code Academy (same thing?) Scratch, Learn Street and prob a couple more. Thank you!

  7. We try to do the Bible every day, M-F. We just take as much time as needed. With my two little ones I use Leading Little Ones to God. We read the chapter, read the short passage from the Bible, answer questions and pray. With my two oldest we read straight from the Bible. I have a study Bible. I read a chapter and then read from the study notes. We discuss and I answer any questions. We dont do it for school though. For school my little ones will be doing Heart of Dakota and they will have their own Bibles, so we will go through what they say to do every week. Im not sure what the older ones are doing yet.

  8. I am going to be homeschooling 4 this fall. Well my youngest is going to be 4, so it wont take much time, but still. I will also be doing 1st grade, 7th grade and 9th grade. This will be our fourth year of homeschooling. I am going to do Heart of Dakota for my two youngest. I was thinking I would do a scheduled out program for all 4, but now Im not sure. I got all the stuff for the youngest used or by trade, so that saved me alot, but I am concerned about the cost of getting all the stuff for the two oldest. I was thinking of doing My Fathers World for high school and possibly for the 7th grader, or maybe HOD, so it will get pricey.

Anyway, I started thinking about trying to pull together a curric for at least one of the oldest, as I have been doing in the past. I am just really concerned it will be too much for me to handle with so many kids. So my question to you moms with lots of kids is, do you think its best to stick with schedule out "all in one" currics or just go ahead and try to make my own. I really dont even know where to start. I already know I am going to do Apologia for science, but other than that I just dont know. I dont think I can combine my two oldest since my 9th grade needs certain classes. My 7th grader isnt ready to do high school level work yet. I need to make my year easy and have the oldest working independently as much as possible. I have scheduled out a year before, but not last year. I kind of laid out a weekly schedule for them to open their books and do a certain amount for each subject.

  9. I was on the fence about hs'ing my oldest ds for high school, but we have decided to go for it. I am pretty nervous as high school is a new territory for me, and I will also be hs'ing 3 others at the same time! At this point he wants to go to a technical college (but who knows what could happen in 4 years?) so I want to get him credits for what he needs to get into a regular college (i.e. not university).

So I am thinking we will start off with Apologia Physical Science, Saxon math with the DIVE cd, and WriteShop for writing. Other than that I am lost. I dont know what to do for history and I need to add in foreign language and he wants to do art. Well right now he is very interested in art and possibly wants to do something with art for his career, but he isn't sure. He also really thinks he wants to go to Japan so I was going to let him take Japanese.

So I am wondering what the opinions are of what I have so far. According to the state page he only needs 3-4 years of math, 4 years of english, 3 years social science, and 2-3 years science. I dont see where it says what type of English class it needs to be.

  10. I am trying to decide where to go in history for my 7th grader this fall. We have been hs'ing for 3 yrs and we started with ancients in 4th, then middle ages and a 1/2 year of early modern. I want to keep in mind that he will need to do US, world and government in high school. I was thinking about doing US history, but then I have no idea what I would do for 8th. Also, he has to redo US in high school. Then I was thinking maybe I should do ancients and middle ages again to give a more in depth look since we wont be doing those in high school. I am also trying to keep in mind that my oldest will be going into 9th and maybe I can combine then for history over the next few years. Maybe not though... I just want to have a plan laid out so I dont have to try to figure out what direction to take every year, lol. And I thought it would be good to get a balanced education of history. Then again, I just have no idea!

  11. Thank you so much for the info. It was enlightening. I can see why a Director might put the pressure on to get spots filled - and it would work very well! she told me a little story to go along about how eager mothers often seek her out with a check begging to get into a spot. quite a bit of pressure! but I am not going to just jump into it for sure because of the pressure - I will only do it if I know it is right. It doesnt exactly sound like what I was looking for, although maybe I am looking for the wrong thing anyway. lol!

  12. I have just talked to the Director of the local CC program and I am very interested. I am doing some research to find out more about it though. I am looking at doing it with my 5 (almost 6 yr old) and my 12 yr old. For my 12 yr old I think I will do one yr of Foundations before moving on to Challenge. I am just still a bit confused as to how a week works. I know you meet once a week to do a class. I know there is a lot of memory work. I know there is the Essentials class if you want to do a writing program in depth with them and that it costs extra. I have seen some say they only use CC as a supplement and some that use it as the core for their hs. I have been told that once you join you can get a book list to get books to go along with what you are learning.

What I am really looking for next year is a laid out program. I have been told there is some sort of guide that you use for CC, but Im not exactly sure what it tells you to do every week. I would really love something all laid out for me. Also because of the cost I would really love to be able to use it as a full curric with little supplementing (I know I have to at least add math). But I have read there is very little to the history. So I am just very confused!

I was seriously considering using Heart of Dakota for my 5 yr old and Sonlight for my 12 yr old, but I am just not sure. I seem to have been lead to CC and so I want to give it a good look to see what its about and if its right. There are only a couple of spots left right now so I need to be quick with a decision. Thanks!
