  1. This is rough and it happens to most of us, sometimes for a few weeks and sometimes we have months and months of attitude. What works for many people is lawing down the law--some law, you decide (in our family it is that they don't have to like it, but they have to do it in a timely fashion without complaint if they want to eat, do sports, watch a movie or whatever it is that they like.) Strict enforcement.

I do use material I know they will like, try new things and have fun Friday. Yes, even in high school a fun day a week can be worked into the schedule.

Experience has shown me that when things are not going well, I need to focus on a few key subjects (math, writing, reading) that must be done. Then I reevaluate the plan. If they hate science, try just watching videos from the library on the topic for a week before reading just part of the textbook or doing an experiment. Same with history. Don't run out and buy more material. This is your first year, so don't expect it to go smoothly all the time. They are learning, you are doing a good job and things will improve. Don't take what all of us tell you too seriously, what works for us may never work for you. Think deeply about just one issue that you are facing, one subject or one constant area of conflict, and just change that one thing. It may seem like you need to change material (that always seems to be the easiest thing to do) but that doesn't alway solve the prolem. Sometimes it is just time away from the subject that makes it appear that the material change has made the difference.

  2. Ugh, so many of the cooking healhty sites are filled with ads and side bars that I can't find just the basic stuff I'm looking for. HELP.

I need a site that has recipes that have been tested by someone (maybe reviews or comments) that I can use to create meal plans. We're all getting fat and lazy here using the same meal ideas over and over. I need lower carb and lower fat. I'm just overwhelmed by all the sites out there.

  3. My 16 year old (slim, fits into big girls or juniors) was watching the last Avonlea episode with her younger sisters and she loved the dresses Felicity wore and would like one.

The image linked below is the closest I can find to showing the tailored style, although Felicities were far more attractive and with a higher waiste. Any ideas? I'm hoping there are boutiques online or maybe someone has seen them in a department store? I could also attempt to sew one, but that would be a last resort

just found this which is a little bit closer, although not the color or lace http://i.ebayimg.com/t/VINTAGE-1920s-30s-PAPRIKA-CREPE-CHIFFON-DRESS-w-CREAM-LACE-YOKE-PUFF-SLEEVES-/00/s/MTQxOVgxMjAw/$%28KGrHqV,!rkFBCQ81N+!BQbfC%29hBBw~~60_12.JPG

  4. I began homeschooling before the internet and in comparison, I have to admit that I was far better off without it. My two main blocks play out like this-

Before-very involved with IRL community and homeschoolers

Now-Most social support from internet and indifference at times about IRL relationships

Before-Easily focused on children and family responsibilities

Now-Often distracted or impatient because I want to get back to an article that I was reading on the net

The internet helpfulness in terms of homeschooling, cooking, crafting, news updates, oop books, etc--well, they were all there IRL they just required patience to find and involved interaction with people.

Bottom line-I'm dependent on immediate gratification now and have to daily resist by closing it and putting it out of site. I'm like a child who can't be allowed to see the cookie jar.

  6. For example "We are going to the movies tomorrow and we'd love to bring your children along. I checked and the matinee prices are $6.50 for children. Let me know if you guys are able to go!

    :iagree:

I do agree but here is the situation. My friend has some troubled adopted boys who constantly wreak havoc on their lives and in their home. Because of this, the mom tries to get her dd out of the house regularly.

In that situation I think the mother will glady and without prompting send money so that you continue the kindness! Still, I would phrase it as suggested above and just be direct if she doesn't send money this time.

You are being incredibly thoughtful and while it may be taxing at times, your daughter will benefit from your example of kindness to those who are struggling.

  7. Please, you are all welcome to start a weekly discussion topic. Ideally it should go up Sunday night. Flag it by putting CB: followed by the subject in the subject heading. I won't start a discussion unless I notice no other one topic has been initiated by Monday morning. Other discussions are welcome too.

Does anyone know how to set this group for membership approval? At this time it seems that anyone can join. The options are public (which it is now), moderated (which seems to require approval of topics), and invite only. My impression is that invite only necessitates sending out invitations, but maybe that is the feature that allows members to request to join the group. If anyone knows how that feature works, please let me know.

  8. Let's flag discussions for the week with CB (coffee break) to differentiate them from other more personal questions people may post. Anyone can start at CB, just put it out there Sunday night.

Have you found the internet to be a bridge in growth for you or a barrier to your becoming a better mother, wife, woman of God, etc.? What sites have helped you to grow or caused you to stumble?

  9. I'm running off to Mass now and quickly created this group. The image of Mary contemplating Jesus was chosen as our icon as a reminder of the direction this group. A topic for discussion will be posted later and hopefully approving members will be something that can be easily figured out.

  10. I thought Crossing Tiber was specifically created for people who are in the process of converting or who have converted. If this board requires approval, than should the moderator be able to easily eliminate trolls? I'm happy to use CT, but thought this board might be easier for people to find seems it screams Catholic. If we use CT wouldn't we need to stay close to Catholic topics? I really enjoy the feedback on the main boards, but sometimes there are general topics that would benefit from non-interference from anti-Catholics and it would also be helpful at times to just narrow a discussion down to thoughts from Catholics. I'm not particularly attached to using this board over another. We could even open a new board, although I have no idea how to do that.
