For my grandparents, my parents surprised them by bringing together members of the bridal party (some people my grandparents hadn't seen in 20+ years). We collected photos and I made a scrapbook, and we also had a photo-DVD made. My mother re-created their wedding cake as best as possible (and also the flowers and colors, etc.).

SwapaCD! It's run by the same people as PaperbackSwap, and I believe (don't quote me on this, as I don't use the CD service) that you can transfer your credits to get books with them.

Yay! I've been meaning to experiment for a while and come up with a homemade LARA BAR, and someone has done all the work for me! Thanks for posting this. Will make some later this week to try it out.

I would ask why they have a hard time doing two things at once. Is it really a biological thing or just an excuse to zone out while watching t.v.
It's really biological. Women can multi-task, and men can't (in general, obviously there are exceptions). And I use this against dp ALL the time. I am allowed to be on the computer/whatever while on the phone with him, but he must give me his undivided attention. And it is true - he can't tell if I am doing something else - and I am usually listening better if I am cleaning the kitchen or whatnot - but I can ALWAYS tell if he is doing something else.

Yep, you can definitely bring your iPod. You cannot use it during takeoff and landing, so make sure it is turned off (and tucked away) then. They will announce when it is "safe" to begin using it, and will ask you to turn it off 15miuntes or so before you land.
I always bring a blanket and/or sweatshirt and socks with me while I fly. I get SO cold on airplanes. Perhaps some healthier snacks? You can bring any food you like. If I don't make a point to eat healthy while flying, I always feel sick. Make sure you drink a lot on the flight as well.
Oh yeah - have fun! :)

Thanks for the heads-up. I think I may need a new soup pot... And if you spend $129 on Le Creuset, you can get a set of heart ramekins for free.

For your 4 yo, I would NOT do FLL - a 4 yo definitely doesn't need to be doing any formal grammar program. I don't know what R&S Pre-K includes, but I would recommend lots of math manipulatives (pattern blocks, counters, etc.), and fun games (card games like war, crazy eights, etc. can teach early math skills), and perhaps some Kumon books (Cutting, Mazes), if stuff like that does not come with R&S's Pre-K program.
Perhaps some sort of writing program for your oldest?
For mapping/geography, I know SOTW includes mapping, and I think most other history programs do as well, so I don't think you need to worry about that right now.
For science, are you going to have a "plan" or keep it interest-led? (I think either is fine, just curious.)

Yay! Congratulations! What a perfect Mother's Day gift!

Thanks! :001_smile:

I couldn't tell by your post if you were aware that there is a set of tests for SOTW. Right Here.
For studying for the test, I do not have the Activity Book for SOTW2 yet, but I know in the back of the guide for SOTW1, there are review cards, and I would assume they are also in the guide for SOTW2. I think you could go over the questions in the book, and the review cards, and that should be sufficient for studying for a test.

I think my acquaintance on the other board was just trying to identify some book titles she could look for at some upcoming used book sales she was going to attend - she plans to purchase the SOTW Activity Guide, but it wouldn't come before the books sales - neither she nor I even considered how her (my) request would violate copyright laws.
If she familiarizes herself with the topics in SOTW (and just the time period in general), she can buy books that would fit with the topics, and then round out her collection with the books suggested in the Activity Guide. The books suggested in the Activity Guide are not the ONLY acceptable books for the topic - more of a guideline - and it will be fine to substitute other books.

I either buy from Amazon (best price, and I have a Prime Membership, so free 2-day shipping), or a brick and mortar store (Barnes and Noble usually - I have a discount card there as well), when I see the book and want it RIGHT NOW. ;)
Peace Hill Press does carry some things that Amazon doesn't sell (Student Pages to the activity books comes to mind - I just ordered a set of those tonight), and I happily buy those from them direct. But some things are significantly cheaper at Amazon, and with the free shipping, I can't justify the extra cost to buy from PHP.
Oh yeah - the versions are all the same - the most current. And I buy the paperback because I prefer paperback books in general.

stephanie - what age kiddos did you use the tests with?

We have and use (2 1/2 yo boy and 4 1/2 yo girl):
Pattern Blocks (we had a ton of fun with these today)
Teddy Bear Counters
Dinosaur Counters
Tangrams (even the two year old has done well with the tangrams)
Unifix cubes
We also have shape, number, and color bean bags (in Spanish too!) that are fun to play with.
I have bought most if not all of this at our local teacher supply/educational supply stores. I really like to hold things and look at things in person before I buy. I think Rainbow Resource carries most (if not all) of this stuff as well.

I used to do daily To-Do lists for myself, but I have gotten out of the habit lately. I have been thinking I need to start it back up again - I am much happier and more productive when I can check things off a list.
I wrote the list on a large Post-It every night for the next day. It included daily things to do (clean kitchen counter, laundry, etc.), weekly things for that day (meal plan, errands, etc.), and anything else I wanted to get done that day. (Making a mental note to myself to start writing lists again...)

You have one week from the due date to return the movies, before they charge you the purchase price of the movie (which is generally incredibly high). You then have 30 days (I think, don't quote me on that), to return the movie, at which point they will charge a $1.25 restocking fee.
You should be fine. Also, they tend to call me before movies are "sold" to my account.

I'm adding her to my Amazon Prime membership, and my sister will help her set up a wishlist on Amazon. My mother doesn't need anything, and the things she wants are very specific, so this will help us all.
Oh, and I'll send her a homemade card.

Love the books, remember them fondly from my childhood. Like others said, you can start with The Dark is Rising - I remember I did, and then I eventually went back and read Over Sea, Under Stone. Didn't even know there was a movie, but hearing what others have said, I guess that's a good thing.
-
Nope, definitely not. Talk, read books, play games, enjoy each other's (and siblings') company. Kids that age learn best through play anyway. Really, they do. And any PreK-type instruction will probably come naturally to you, and happen anyway - you will count, make silly rhymes, notice things outdoors, etc.

I make a sweeter meatloaf. I can't give you quantities, I just throw stuff in there.
Ground meat
Chopped onion
Egg
Rolled Oats
Ketchup
Brown Sugar
Salt and Pepper
Mix it all together, shape or put in a pan, put some ketchup on top, and bake.

This may not be terribly helpful, depending on where you are, but I buy local peanuts (in Oklahoma). I would guess that smaller producers would be less likely to have contamination with tree nuts. (It doesn't say on the packaging at all, but I bet I could ask.) I have an unopened 5 lb. bag of raw, shelled Spanish peanuts. If you would like, PM me your address and I would be happy to send you this bag. :)

There was a new episode this Monday. It was really good too...

I used some to rewrite sentences from OPGTR - the writing was too small, and the book too cluttered. (Haven't needed them lately, apparently that issue has resolved itself.)
To balance the what you wish you hadn't read thread...which was your absolute FAV'?!

Witch of Blackbird Pond. Loved it, read it over and over.
At 10-13 I also remember rereading Just as Long as We're Together by Judy Blume.
And then a few years later (16 or 17), I read The Chosen by Chaim Potok, and that has taken over as my favorite book of all time.
