  1. I just wanted to tell you that I agree MFW K and 1st are very slow paced and they really do NOT give you a good feel for how the other years will be, but the rest of the years actually seem a bit more advanced in grade level. They definately pick up the pace in the 5yr cycle. The only problem is if you do not like having everything scheduled for you. If you can get past that, it's actually quite rich in content. (I unfortunately can't get past it but I hope to because a really do think it's a great curriculum)

If you look at the homeschool reviews website, I seriously could not seem to find bad reviews for the older years, only for the K and 1st grade years. And most of them were complaints about the slow pace. HTH you!

I have heard complaints about the K program as well, I never used it. I also have heard quite a few reviews that say that the 1st grade program goes a little fast. I have done the 1st grade program, and I think it is AWESOME! Beyond the phonics program, which is multi-sensory, you have proverbs character study, along with memorizing a proverb each week. A bible notebook that the child writes and illustrates ( this is to be cherished, for sure!) Reads, studies, and makes a time line of all major stories of the bible, memorizes books of bible, learn how to draw a bible lands map from memory, cool science projects with Usborne books, nature study, list of tons of previewed books to go along with subject matter, and a 4 day week!

  2. While you can chose your own Math and LA program to go with MFW, you also can chose to include their recommendations for Math and LA to make it a complete set.

For this year you would want to put your 1st grader in the MFW 1st grade program, and have your 4th grader in ECC, with your younger somewhat tagging along. Then in the other years they could be combined with one guide for bible, history, science, music and art, and then they would be doing Math and LA on individual grade level.

  3. Oh, and don't forget the timeline in MOH! Doing timelines are great! I love the idea of using a fold up cardboard fabric cutting board for it. I use them for our time line for MFW, and it works great 'cause you can just fold them up and put them away!

  4. If you are interested in combining both programs you will like this...

We tried it this way, but I just needed something more cohesive, with bible and history, plus I think at the time when my kids were in 1st, I felt this was way over their head. we chose MFW because it was exactly what we were looking for.

But you have older kids, so it could be doable. I recommend getting the coloring sheets that go with SOTW, do the projects, and find great books that go along with what you all are studying.

    HTH,

    Katherine

  5. Because my oldest taught himself to read, I didn't have to worry with a phonics program. But, when my daughter went through MFW 1st grade it was so awesome, I had him join in with her for everything but the phonics. The proverb scripture memorization/character study, making an AWESOME bible notebook (what a treasure), memorizing books of the bible, learning major bible people/stories/time line, and drawing a bible lands map from memory was NOT to be missed! :001_smile: They both loved the science experiments too!

  6. :iagree: Most Nick shows are just plain corny/stupid, and Disney is way too snarky, generally parents are portrayed as idiots. My kids take spells watching it though, but THEY get tired of all the re-runs and they turn it off. But I can tell when they are watching Disney, I get more attitude, back talk, and sassy mouth.

BUT, in our house we LOVE Phineas and Ferb! Perry the Platypus RULES!...any platypus for that matter!

  7. We are doing ECC this year, and I'll tell you, I couldn't add any more too it. It's pretty thorough. You'll have quite a bit to do. If you wanted to look at other things, I would suggest looking at stuff you could keep in your book basket. Maybe animal books? Activities having do with maps? Geography? Something that has information of ecosystems, artists and or music from different countries? Geography games?

  8. how funny ;) My eyes were burning from pollen and a little bit of clorox to clean some mildew from the toilet.

if you do end up being one of the moms who helps at the booth, comfy shoes... comfy shoes.... I no longer help at conventions, but when I did... forget fashion to match shoes... comfy shoes. It's nice that they encourage real customers to just share what works and show them around and share memories of programs. I never felt good enough at it.

I think you do a great job answering with what you do know and share from your heart and experience. That's all that matters. that's all I do. share my mistakes, share my good stuff. hope someone doesn't mess up and blame me.

oh well... time to wash my eyes again. it's spring.

Sorry to hear of your allergy troubles! I've been fortunate this year. I've been doing some herbal ointments and taking olive leaf extract and it has really helped! Lucy said they will have mats on the floor to help with the feet, but yeah, I already know which pair of shoes I'm wearing! Not only am I excited about helping but I'm also excited about learning more details about the other programs I haven't used as well as the high school program! It's going to be AWESOME to be around all that knowledge!

  9. A positive aspect with the MFW path is that your older will be able to do ECC -a whole year of world geography, tons of mapwork, learning about people in each country, their religion, how to pray for them, missionaries that ministered to those countries, a study of the book of Matthew, ecosystems, geography terms. This will really enrich the following years, tying them all together.

WOW, lots to think about, huh? I've been where you are. You have a couple of choices, BUT they are all GOOD choices! That's even harder! Pray about it! The Lord will lay on your heart what to do. I'm going to say a prayer for you tonight!

  10. a gentle correction on that typo...

it is a jr. high supplement, not high school supplement.

    Crystal,

Not a prob, thanks! I actually went back and scrapped the whole post and wrote something else!

BTW, were your ears burning today??? LOL I was doing a phone interview with Lucy today about working for MFW at my conference, and I told her about trying to help with MFW questions on this forum, I can NEVER hold a candle to YOU, I told her you were like a walking MFW encyclopedia! ;) We both agreed you are AWESOME!!!!:001_smile:

  11. This is the path suggested by MFW

Year 1 ECC with 7th grade supp

Year 2 Creation to Greeks with 8th grade supp

Year 3 Rome to Reformation then the 9th grader breaks off independently for yr 1 high school program

Year 4 Exploration-1850 10th grader independently for yr 2 high school program

Year 5 1850-present(7th grade supp), 11th grader independently for yr 3 high school program

Year 6 ECC(8th grade supp), 12th grader indepently for yr 4 high school program-GRADUATION

Now your younger two will go thru the 4 year high school cycle. And you will already have your curriculum!

My two are only 1 grade apart (2nd and 3rd grade) and I worked with my younger overtime and I started 3rd grade in January with both in 3rd. So they are combined in 3rd across the board in all subjects! It's AWESOME!

  12. If you were to call MFW for placement, and it being your first year, they would say to combine them all in Exploring Countries and Cultures, there is also a supplement for that program for 7th and 8th graders. The reason they suggest this is because ECC studies geography and peoples, praying and having a heart for the Lord for those people, and lays a foundation to be built upon as you proceed thru the next for years of chronological history, it helps make connections in following years.

BUT, you are the momma and you ultimately know what will work for your kiddos!

  13. Some childrens bibles are more "sugar coated" than others. In my case...I needed sugar coated.

We use a bible that came with our curriculum, NIrV, for young readers, and I absolutely love it! I love to listen to my kiddos read from it, and recently I've been using it for my personal bible reading! It's cool to read the Bible in a simplistic refreshing way!:001_smile:

  14. We did Adventures last year. Some pages that have to do with a specific person or event has a picture to color on the top half and the bottom have handwriting lines write in a short narration. There are some pages that have handwriting lines that fill the whole page with "Americana" pics at bottom and top. This is used for copywork for each bible verse that is memorized. Some pages are lyrics to the patriot music being studied, there are little pics for the kids to color if they like. There's black line maps, a copy of the Dec of Independence, coloring pages for the Nutcracker (music being studied) There are 50 state sheets that are colored, it includes the state bird, flower, and state, the the state on a national map, you put the state flag sticker on those also.

I can't speak for the other program because we aren't that far yet!

Hope this is what you are asking!

  15. When I saw this thread I was determined to keep myself from posting why I stopped using hod because every single time post of my issues....well...this happens. I knew it:tongue_smilie:

:iagree: Look at the box at the top of the page-

Parents' Forum K-8 Curriculum Board For questions about specific curricula and their relationship to classical education. Express yourself politely! And remember that no single program can possibly meet the needs of every home schooler; let's benefit from the variety available. NO ADVERTISEMENTS!

  16. In FLL 3 it gives instruction that it's fine to start with FLL3, but they recommend purchasing the FLL 1 and 2 accompanying CD to use with it to help with memorizing the lists of terms and parts of speech.

This is what I'm doing with my dd so I can combine her with my ds. It's working great!

  17. If you like HOD, maybe look at MFW which can combine both? or even Sonlight? And I agree, if Singapore is working, stick with it! :) You can do a core for history/science/lit together and then math and LA independently with them.

MFW is an awesome option, but probably not right now. You can't really combine them until Adventures which is designed for a 2nd grader and a 1st grader with the older sibling that is reading and writing well. That being said, MFW recommends Singapore 2 for math in Adventuresfor 2nd grade.

My children are only one year apart in grades. I was able to combine them both in Adventures last year, and I worked with my younger extra in LA, and because she was really great in Math I was able to combine them this year in all subjects!!! Let me tell you! It is so convenient!
