That helps. We have been in the military for 15 years and moved around quite a bit. I am just having a hard time with this move. I think I am just being irrational though. Thank you for the great links.
We should be there by the end of October. Hopefully we can find a nice house and get settled in quickly. Any recommendations on good places to live? We were thinking about Wetumpka or Pratteville. We would like to get a house with a little land to put horses on. I am getting a little doubtful though. It seems like you have to spend a few million or the ones we can afford have really old houses or trailers.
Thanks ladies. You are all a big help.

It has been such a busy day.
I should have mentioned where we are moving..Montgomery.. We will probably buy a house in Wetumpka or Pratteville..but I don't mind driving into Montgomery for events etc..

I would like to be a member of a Cover School in Alabama when we move in 3 months but there are so so many...How to choose?? Please recommend one for me.
We are a Christian (Baptist) family. My kids are 11, 8 and 5. It would be nice to be a part of one that has field trips/activities planned. I don't want to have to deal with cumbersome paperwork or hefty fees.
Any suggestions?

How exciting. I def. think Hsing and going to school is doable. Especially online classes. When I take classes I make sure and set up a study/class time schedule and work Homeschooling around that. It has worked out well for me. I also teach art in my home. It can be overwhelming but having a good schedule..(I even print it out and post it) makes a huge difference.
You can do it!!

I could not imagine doing something like this.

We are always very careful when we move to a new neighborhood or base. We like to take our time to get to know people. We have had some really bad neighbors...To be honest it was the ones who were overly friendly, nosy, let their kids have run of our yard/things and gossiped about the neighbors before we had a chance to meet them. Also, it takes a good month before we have our house unpacked and we get into some kind of routine.
Maybe they are just trying to feel out the neighborhood and get settled. Give them some time..I'm sure they are perfectly normal.

I appreciate all the advice.. I think I will just tell my kids not to hang around the others for a good while. I am sending her to the Youth Center to play today instead of having to deal with these girls.
Girls can be so mean and ugly.....You know, I have found the parents to be just as mean if not more than their bully-kids. No wonder the kids act the way they do.

We have had several minor issues with neighborhood kids just being ugly and mean to my kids. Most of it has to do with my daughter who is 11. She is constantly being teased for being home-schooled. They call her uneducated and make fun of her a lot. (believe me she is not dumb..she blew the benchmark tests out of the water) My daughter is by no means an angel. I have heard her get snippy with them but it is usually when she is defending herself. Now, they have started teasing my 8 year old son b/c he is her brother. They treated him fine before that.
I know all kids go through teasing and rejection...I just need some fresh ideas on how to help her deal with it. It really gets to my daughter. She is pretty sensitive and feels like there is something wrong with her. I have talked to her about being nice to them even if they are being ugly (but stand up for herself when she needs to) Also to ignore them, go somewhere else etc... It is just harder to do that now b/c one girl is trying to get all the other kids to be mean to my daughter. This girl spent the night here on my dd birthday and acted horrid. My daughter asked her to stop doing a few things that were rude and since then this girl has been on a mission to hurt my dd..
Sorry for the rambling..I am just out of ideas.
Thanks,
Camille

My latest favorite is working with glass. I have taught myself how to make stained glass as well as mosaics. Next, glass fusion.. I love painting and have a recent interest in Sumi-E which is a Japanese/Chinese style of ink painting.
I also love to garden...
I admire you bread bakers out there...the last loaf I made was the weight of a rock and the consistency of a football. :001_huh:

"Rep" someone? I have looked at the user control panel and FAQ links and I can not seem to figure it out.

We may be moving to Alabama and I need to know about how to legally homeschool there. I read the two different options and it seems logical to register through the church school option. How in the world would I go about doing this? Are there homeschoolers in the Montgomery area that can help me figure out how to do this? I have never had to do anything like this and I am very nervous about it. I can not imagine being told I can not homeschool my kids...
Thanks in advance

Oh how I wish I could go to a farmers market. The snow just melted (again) here in Alaska and we can't even put our plants outside yet. That is the only thing I miss about the lower 48. I would kill for a real tomato.

This is a great and easy to implement book. Each lesson starts out with a famous artist, information about the artist and their styles and methods. There are great hands on projects that reinforce what they are learning. I also like Visual Manna's Complete Art Curriculum. This curriculum goes through many of the basics of art and gets more challenging as you go along.
There are a few websites that I use to supplement these programs and get some new, neat ideas.
http://www.artsonia.com (you may have to register as a teacher to view lessons..free)
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/ This site has a lot of great ideas and information.
I teach art out of my home. My students favorite project by far this year was Stained Glass Mosaics. We took 6 weeks to complete the mosaics. (One class session per week) They drew out their own patterns, cut and placed glass and grouted.
I don't think you have to purchase an expensive curriculum. Sometimes the best thing to do is pick an artist and let them inspire your project. Good luck!

My Dh will be working on Gunter. We don't mind living out a little bit from base. I would be perfectly content with a corner store and shopping on the internet. I do not like large crowds and will avoid shopping at all costs. :ack2:
( I look like that after shopping with my 3 kids)
Blizzard eh? That is hilarious. 1/4 " snow drifts...thanks...I needed to laugh.
You guys are great. I am so glad I found this board.
Jenn, you are really helping to ease my anxiety over this move. Thanks! Did I tell you my daughters name is Alexis too? We just call her Lexy though.
I am proud of myself. I packed 5 boxes today. I have been procrastinating like crazy to get started packing. We are moving ourselves down so I guess I better get with the program.
