  1. Do you find you have any issues with the books? Meaning inappropriate content, etc.? How do you deal with those things?

It was great fun to meet you in person! :)

    Warmly,

    Kate

Yeah that was fun to meet someone from the boards.....my first by the way.

I have not had any issues with the books as of yet. I read some of the Gilgamesh out loud and I just don't remember anything explicit. I do remember mention of him and the woman being together and I don't remember how they worded it but it was obvious. I just don't remember it being so horrid that I was concerned. Omnibus has a lot of bible books in the beginning and some of those were very explicit and I made sure we had plenty of discussion but I didn't feel reading those things would harm him. We have talked openly over the years about s*x (at age appropriate levels) and so it wasn't a complete shock.

**but those bible books really did shock me a bit. I certainly didn't realize there was so much s*x in them. I guess my memory wasn't good enough to remember that. But it isn't what my ds remembers most about the books anyway.

One thing I had established many years ago when he began getting ahead of me in what he reads was that if he ever comes across anything that he doesn't understand or is concerned about he should stop reading and come to us to discuss. Almost every time we just need to discuss the specific subject and he can continue to read. There was one book years ago that I told him to just leave and not finish because it was really way off in things we believe in. For me it is important that he knows he can move on to other books and doesn't have to finish reading something that makes you feel icky just because you started the book so you must finish. There are just too many other books to read.

I can say I'm a little nervous about 12 Caesars because I didn't realize there is a lot of s*x in it so I may have to read that one aloud and then edit it. But I still plan on including it unless I read it and hate it. Glad I'm not there yet.

  2. We are working our way through the first semester and are focused on the primary books, but we are reading all of the secondary books as well.

My ds had already read all of the Narnia books many, many times so we just read the prologue they provided and ran through some of the questions for each of those to make sure he remembered them and to add to his understanding of the stories.

My son is 13 and a very advanced reader so he is keeping up pretty well so far. I find I don't have the patience or time to put into each book myself. In the beginning I was reading right along with him, but now I am still catching up so the intro and questions help me out a lot.

There is a ton of discussion and questions and so I find that we just pick our way through and don't worry about doing all of them. I don't mind having the discussion, but I will agree it takes a tremendous amount of time that I don't always have, so sometimes we read a few of the required assignments and then plow through a bunch of days questions at once.

My son loves to write, but I find that lately he is doing very few actual writings on each book. Mostly we are discussing and moving on. In my opinion it is a ton to read each book as well as cover the other things we are working on, but so far we just keep moving forward.

I may just be stubborn but I have a hard time skipping things because I appreciate so much having all these books layed out for me. I like the format the book is in and all the great questions to really help me be able to discuss a lot of these things. I think as we move along I may have him just skim and partially read some of the larger, more boring texts like Herodotus. I think that is the one I've looked at that seems so long.

Wow! I sure had a lot to say;) Anything else specific I'll try to help:)

**oh, and I have purchased the entire set of books so I have them all either way.

  3. I have 5 dc and I have them pair up to tie shoes, hold hands when we are out, hlep with chores etc. I still interact with my children. I would give Michelle Duggar a little more slack as we really don't know what the dynamic in thier house is really like.

Well you have 5 and she has 17! So I don't really see those as alike at all. I can see the necessity in pairing up and helping out. My oldest does breakfast every morning for the little one and does a lot of other things to help me out, but I guess I just can't see how she has time to spend with all of them. I only have three and can't get it all done. That seems to me like the older children would have more than the normal work load for a family member.

  4. Ooh, Thank you all so much!

Lots of recommendations and suggestions which give me a good place to start. I'm glad to hear so many people do enjoy his books. He has written so much it's hard sometimes to know where to begin.

I'm going to plow ahead with his Bio and pick one of his books to get started with.

My son is 13 and a very advanced reader, but not good with being scared. So although at his age I was frightened but liked it:) I think he will have to wait a little longer before he can read one himself.

**thanks for the info on what a nice person he is and how much he does for his community. It's nice to know especially after the stories that come out of his mind.

  5. We were just watching Stand By Me recently and discussing how many movies come from his stories and so it got me thinking more about him.

I have read a few of his books when I was younger and enjoyed them. I like scary a lot so I have no problem with the books, but I haven't decided if my son might enjoy them or not. He hasn't asked but I wonder if there is anything we are missing. I haven't read anything recently though.

I'm just curious if you love him or hate him what's the reason?

I just picked up a biography on him at the library and plan to read it. It seems like he gets criticized quite a bit so I was just looking for thoughts, not convicing either way, just thoughts.

    Thanks so much:)

**I'm heading out so I won't be back on for awhile.

  6. I don't know, but I bet she picks out his clothes, LOL.

Actually on one of the episodes he was helping her to buy clothes. She said he has better style than she does and she would much rather stick to brown, black and grey. She said she always shops with him because he knows what looks good on her.

I love the show! My husband and I have a relationship that can be bickery at times and it's how we communicate, especially when I am trying to control situations. I see love from them and he does tell her often when she has gone too far and she apologizes.

  7. uh-oh, I am reading Wicked while the girls take their dance lesson(the studio has it on its bookshelf)

I am only to the part where Nanny makes Melena take Elphaba to play with other children.

Is it bad writing or just yuck?

That's what I want to know also. I am only at the beginning but my husband finished it and he said he just didn't like the ending which always makes a book suck!

  8. Honestly my best discover for me is MAC lip glass. I put it on at bedtime and the stuff is so thick it really heals my cracked lips and helps prevent them from splitting. Lip balm does diddly for me so this is the stuff I use.

**I just wanted to add one of the main ingredients in the lipglass is jojoba oil and vit e.......it's really thick so it stays on for a very long time.

  9. LOL, I'm not buying the "animal" explanation. The caption for the black pair (on that trucknutz website) is "Hang 'em if you got a pair!" Since great danes don't drive trucks, I'm thinking they're supposed to represent human testes. I don't care what the radio host claims. LOL

I've seen them on a few trucks around here. I always want to point and laugh, but I'm scare to do so. The man in the big truck with his big, well, you know, may also have a big gun. LOL

    Yeah, your probably right.

The way the move when people drive just creeps me out something terrible. I still remember when I realized what exactly they were.

  10. but...I'm finding that by using the "New Posts" feature on the boards, I end up reading posts from all the separate boards. I never did that on the old boards. I no longer even really notice the fact that there are separate areas for different topics; all the posts come up in "New Posts," and I read whatever sounds interesting.

This is what I love about the new format. I just click new posts and I am able to read topics I ignored before because I almost always stayed with the general board.

  11. In our little community of 4000, we have all sorts of people, but originally it was the Rednecks. Many carry the "testicle" doodads and I hate it. My dds keep asking about it and I won't tell them. I also hate the bumber stickers of the little onery boy "pissing".

You know they used to bug me until I heard an entire radio talk show about them. They aren't intended to represent human testes, but animal.

And as the host mentioned you see just as much walking behind a great dane. And I can explain that to my child.

Just relaying their opinion...........They still creap me out when I see them on the backs of trucks, but maybe I can convince myself they aren't intending quite what it looks like. Although what the heck does a city boy have them on the back of their trucks??......

So far my kids have not asked.......

  12. I agree with Sharon H in IL.......just read in snippets.

I use the create a muffin recipe once a week at least. We loved this one.

I also really loved the Lentils & Brown rice recipe and I have seen it elsewhere. We use black beans instead but it is still a great and satisfying meal.

That's all I can remember actually still using, but I do refer back to the books often for inspiration.
