Oh - I was just thinking about this the other day - straightening the family room and looking at my basket of garden/seed catalogs. I love to sit by the fire and daydream all winter.
Don't usually do many veggies - I did do snow peas this year but none of them actually made it inside to the table because it became an outdoor snack station for my kids, LOL.
Most I grow flowers and I'm looking at a bunch of new varieties for this year.
Anyone looked at MyFolia.com? I just started using that this year and loved it.

I think it's a lovely idea, and coming from a family to similar to what you have described, I know what a thrill it would be to start out on your own with a set of anything that looked nice and matched.
Someone else suggested Pfaltzgraff and I agree. I'd look at something like their Heritage pattern that's white and basic. As your nieces get older and you learn more about what their adults tastes may be like you can get colored serving dishes or something to mix and match with the basic dishes. Colorful table linens can change the look too.
I'm going to have to start thinking about something like this for my girl. Nice idea.

Nice thread idea... I could use a glass is half full look. ;)

- Exactly halfway through WWE2 and R&S Grammar 2.
- Almost done SS Latin - we'll start Prima Latina in the middle of January, I think.
- Finished Horizons Math 1. We're hoping to finish Horizons Math 2 in the Spring and be back on track grade-wise.
- Finished SWO B and C. (Thinking of switching to AAS in the Spring for both of them?)
- Doing very well with CC memory work.

- Learned to read! :hurray:
- Finished Singapore Early Bird Math A.
- Finished vol I and II of Developing the Early Learner
- Finished ETC A and B.

Anyone else think it's funny that this thread is twice as long as the "favorite books of this year" thread?

We use them for CC timeline as well, and have enjoyed them. Something I didn't expect is how much I enjoy the art/pictures on the front of each card. I feel like my kids are being exposed to all sorts of classic and famous art, sculpture, photographs, portraits... I'm a visual learner and my dd is as well, so I know when she sees those pictures again in another context she'll be able to identify them right away.
Oh, and I second the lamination suggestion. I bought pouches for them from Oregon Laminating and did them all in an evening. No trimming that way, and they are very firm and durable.

Hate wrapping. Here's my confession for this year -
- I ran out of tape so I switched to my tape gun. Oh yes I did. I did at least cut it in little strips so it looks like regular tape, but it’s the shiny tape gun tape all the same.
- I did not trim the ends of most packages where the gift wrap was too long to fold neatly over the ends. I just creased it as best I could and mushed it down.
- I wrapped several gifts with no boxes. They were unusual sizes and I just added more tape to make sure it all sticks together.
- I did not use gift tags. I did the cut-a-square-of-gift-wrap-and-tape-it-on-upside-down trick.
- I used the 99 cents for 200 bows kind of bows on all of them. At least I added more than one bow to some of the bigger boxes just so it didn’t look too anemic.
- I don’t feel guilty about any of this since it will be ripped up and thrown away in a matter of days.
I love the idea of fabric bags with drawstrings and will have to think more about doing that for next year...

Well after seeing the pediatrician, sleep specialist, neurologist and even urgent care when her knees were bad we finally starting going to a chiropractic neurologist. Even though he isn't an MD he has helped us more and is more knowledgeable then all of the other doctors. At first he mainly did neurological tests in the office and tried a few supplements but from the start he suspected gluten intolerance. We had my daughter tested through Entero Lab. You can go to Enterolab.com to find out more information. My daughter was also diagnosed with that knee syndrome but it didn't make sense because she has not been active at all due to the insomnia.
The test results showed that my daughter was intolerant to gluten and also had the genes for it. This means that both my husband and I carry it, although we don't necessarily have intolerance or celiac.
Thanks so much for the info!

My 14 year old dd was recently diagnosed with this. She has severe insomnia and we have tried several doctors and medications. She is also having a few other problems that seem to be related to the fact that this is an autoimmune disease. Her knees occasionally swell up and become very painful....
I didn't even put this together but my child has also had severe knee pain. We eventually took them to a specialist who couldn't really find a problem and finally said it was patellofemoral pain syndrome, but also said it was unusual to see that in a child since it's usually an athletic injury.
He did various tests on dd and it is apparent that one side of her brain is having more trouble then the other. I do eye exercises with her 4 times a day to help straighten certain connections in the brain. Unfortunately so far the insomnia has not improved so we are having more testing done.Is this your pediatrician you are seeing, or an allergist or gastroenterologist? Do you know what tests they did? I've spoken to our pediatrician over the phone, and we're going in for an office visit about this after Christmas, but I'm trying to think ahead about who else we need to see and what we need to ask for.

Thanks so much to all of you for sharing your experiences with this. My child was gluten and dairy intolerant as a baby, with physical symptoms such as rashes and skin problems, diarrhea, etc, but our pediatrician said most kids outgrow that around two and when we gradually reintroduced it there were no physical symptoms so we went merrily on our way.
The problem is that I'm certain something is wrong now. Just that mom instinct, I think. I know it's not Autism and I really don't think it's ADD. There are no issues with impulsive behaviors or hyperactivity. Nothing socially inappropriate - just an *extremely* emotional temperament, threshold for frustration is very low, easily distracted, poor sleep, very irritable, easily angered... the list goes on. For a long time I just thought it was just a challenging personality but it's gotten so bad that I feel like quality of life is becoming an issue - for both of us! Doing school is murder - can't concentrate for more than two minutes at a time, even with me sitting right there redirecting every. single. time. :banghead:
I've about decided that we are going to have to go gf for a couple of months and see what happens. I'm kind of dreading that, but anything is better than what we're dealing with now.
/end of vent... thanks for listening...

We've been dealing with some issues with one of our children and I'm starting to narrow it down. I'm wondering about non celiac gluten sensitivity and wondered if anyone would be willing to share what symptoms their children have with this? I'm interested in any types of symptoms, but most curious about emotional/mental symptoms.

... and a couple of different word root card games. Studying Latin and Greek roots really helped my dd develop a love for words and language.
Do you happen to remember the card games you used?
And, don't discount spelling bees if you think that may be something your dd would be interested in. Participating in and studying for bees really enriched my dd's vocabulary.
Hadn't thought of that - good idea. I'll do some looking around.

Me too! It's amazing how reading the selections gets my son interested. WWE has been a fabulous addition to our homeschool because of this unexpected bonus!
I was just thinking that very thing this morning. I put Caddie Woodlawn in my daughter's school box for this week and she read a page and then remembered it from the WWE assignment. "Yes! I wanted to read this book!" she said. That's happened several times around here.

My dd is a natural speller - just one of those intuitively-gets-it kind of spellers. I have had her doing SWO just so she has something independent to do while I work with my son, but I let her go at her own pace on it and she's flying through it. She's almost done with book D and although I have book E ready, I'm wondering at what point do I give up on Spelling as a specific subject and have her start doing vocabulary study instead?
She reads voraciously and very well and already has a good vocabulary because of that. She loves learning new words. She is 7 and doing mostly 2nd grade work.
SO - two questions
- When do you switch from spelling to vocabulary?
- What vocabulary program would you recommend for a younger student on a pretty rigorous path?

I'm using MPH for 3rd and just got my order in. I got the homework book and HOTS book with the text/activity books, but no TM. In the past we've done science two days a week (alternating with history) but I wouldn't mind to do it 3-4.
So my question - how do you schedule MPH with these resources? Read in the text, do an activity, then... do you finish a whole chapter before you go to the Homework book or the HOTS book? Do pieces of HOTS mid chapter?
Also - how many books are you supposed to get through in 3rd and then for 4th? I'm assuming it's advisable to do them in the order listed in the HOTS and Homework table of contents?

I was actually reading my RR catalog in bed last night, placing sticky tabs on quite a few pages!
So I'm not the only one that does this?!
I'll have to tell my husband he has no basis to make fun of me, as I actually know at least one other hs mom who does the very same thing... :D

In the absence of serious answers I'll give you the first thing I thought of...
Is it dishwasher safe? My kids filled both sides with potato chips last week and made a mess. :glare:
-
Here are a couple of sites I have used for the same thing...
It also made a big difference when I just started using theory flashcards every day. I got them at a Rainbow booth at our convention.

Are you looking for read alouds, or independent readers? At what level is your child reading?
-
Lots of good books here - just adding one my son has read over and over and over and over....
How I Became A Pirate by Melinda Long.
Also, Poppleton books by Cynthia Rylant.

This very issue is driving me nuts right now as well.
So here's my question - does it seem worthwhile to try two approaches at once - $1 for each day work is finished on time, for instance, as well as taking away bedtime free reading if she does not finish on time?
Telling her she had to go to bed early (esp. earlier than her little brother) and no free reading time would really get her. She's also motivated by money though, so I'm wondering which way to go.
Any experienced mom thoughts on this? (or dads... :001_smile:)

Just looking ahead here - is there a resource that offers quick daily diagramming practice? Something along the lines of Daily Grams, but with diagramming... I'm thinking at about a 4th grade level.

So glad to hear this - I recently decided on MPH for science next year and it's killing me to not click the Place Order button. :D We're doing a sort of hodge podge of CKE chapters from Biology and Earth Science this year and not really enjoying it. Mostly we've ended up reading piles of library books and doing Young Scientist Club experiments. It's fine for now, but I'm looking forward to going to something more meaty.

Piggybacking on the OP question - so would you recommend doing ETC together with AAS? Waiting until done with ETC 3 or 4 and reading strongly before going to AAS? Dropping ETC and just doing AAS?
What is the best BOARD GAME you/your family got for Christmas?
