  1. My cousin graduated from St. Kitts two years ago The pictures she shared from her time there were insane in a good way. Rigorous education, but what a place to get it!  She had no shortage of job offers after graduation and so far has seemed happy with where she landed.  While it's only been a few years, she seems really happy and fulfilled with her work.

  3. Thought of this thread this morning as I mindlessly scrolled for a bit.

Dull Men's Group shows up constantly in my feed. Did you know it became too popular and there is now a spin-off group somewhere where they consider themselves the "real" Dull Men's Group?  There is also a newer Dull Women's Group. Started after too many men complained of non-dull women ruining their vibe. Oh the drama! I don't follow them, but they are in my feed every day, multiple times, and for some reason I find them entertaining.

I also get "White People Making White People's Foods" where they are usually making fun of the cuisine of the state of Iowa.

I must linger just a little too long on some weird things in my feed because it's pretty much 90% of stuff I don't follow, and I hardly ever see actual friends posting.

  4. I'm in an HRM class right now and that sure sounds illegal to me.  Under FMLA, the review should be performed taking into account only the time the employee was on the job, and not include the time they were absent.  So the performance review should be based solely on his work during the 8 months that he was working his job.

I think there would be a case to push back. He is being penalized for being absent during approved leave.

    https://www.hrdive.com/news/performance-review-must-take-into-account-FMLA-leave-7th-circuit/709134/

IN this very recent article I linked to:

he FMLA doesn’t require an employer to adjust its performance standards for the time an employee is actually on the job, the 7th Circuit pointed out. But employers may be unlawfully interfering with an employee’s FMLA rights if they don’t adjust performance standards to avoid penalizing the employee for being absent during approved leave, the panel explained.

I've always disliked eating out if the restaurant is very noise. I get anxiety when being in noisy environments, but we try to go out once a month for dinner, usually well before the dinner rush so it's more manageable for me.  We went to Longhorn the other day, and I had my Air Pods Pro in listening to an audiobook on the ride. I didn't take them out when we got to the restaurant, and forgot I had them in. Even though it was pretty early, they were mobbed and it was very loud. It was giving me anxiety, and it was only getting worse when I realized how long we would probably be there with service being pretty slow. I remembered my Air Pods, and decided to play around with the settings, so I set it to noise cancellation, and holy cow!!! I could still mostly hear what was being said at our table, but the background noise was reduced so much, and my anxiety just disappeared! It was one the most pleasant experiences eating out at that type of place. If only they had this type of technology when my son was younger! He was much worse than I am, but he has mostly outgrown his issues. The Air Pods Pro are the only thing I can put in my ear that don't give me an earache or headache. I've tried ear plugs in the past, but they are always too large and uncomfortable, and I can only last about an hour with them. I can't wait to try this at the next loud wedding we have to go to!! My husband was so unsure of these when he gifted them to me, but I love them so much, and now I love them even more!

The noise cancelling IS magical, isn't it! I wear them when I do a work day in the restaurant kitchen and I can't hear any of the noisy equipment.

I can't eat with mine in though, because then I hear all of my own chewing and it drives me bonkers.

  6. Buffalo.

My ILS have very purposefully relocated themselves from a suburb of Buffalo into Buffalo to age in place with the anticipation of eventually living without a car. Their home in a residential neighborhood is within walking distance of everything that is important to them, and they are just a block or two away from mass transit.

Or cells phones.    imagine having to look for a payphone, and then hoping you had a quarter - (or a dime)

When I was in high school, my parents didn't want to waste any time waiting outside of the school for me when my after school activities were done. So every day when I was completely ready to go, I would drop a quarter in the pay phone, call the home number, let it ring once and then quickly hang up so that I would get my quarter back.  That one ring of the phone was the signal for someone from home to head to the school to pick me up. When I didn't have a quarter, I would have to find someone who did, always assuring them that I would give the quarter right back.

We had a house rule that we never answered the phone on the first ring. For some reason it was considered more polite to let it ring at least twice before picking up.

  8. Ororo.

We use them at work for everyone who works outside in the drive thru and have used the same vests and battery packs over and over.  This is our third winter with them, and while we bought a bunch of new battery packs this year, it was more because too many went missing than that they stopped charging.  We have fifteen of them at the restaurant, but a lot of people have bought their own after using them at work.  Mine is going on two years old and the battery charge is just like it was when I bought it.  If I set the vest on low, it will last at least 8 hours.  I don't generally go all the way low though, so I get about six hours out of it.  I live in that thing all winter-it's the best thing ever.

Thanks! They don't have the 24-25 calendar but I did print out the 23-24 to get an ideal of the timeline. There are 9-10 days between sessions in the fall, spring, and summer to fall with 1 month between fall to spring. Between spring and summer and the 2 summer sessions it is 4 days. They have a spreadsheet that shows what is offered when so I'm going to have dh help me make a game plan as he has lots of practice planning his own schooling.

Don't forget to utilize your academic advisor.  They'll know best which classes are offered in which semesters and how to get you to your goal. There are also places where you might be able to use work experience or some of what you currently are doing at work as an internship.  I did two internships with my last school for a total of six credits (one for each degree) and all I really did for them was my job, and then wrote a paper and made a portfolio.  I am about to do another internship this next semester- this one's only worth two credits, but it's one less elective I need.  In addition, I've been strongly encouraged to apply for 10 credits of work experience, so that will knock down the classes I need to take big time. My advisor thinks I will easily be awarded the full ten.

  10. Yes! Go for it! When I graduated with two associates degrees in May, I was certain I was done with school.  DD also graduated from college in May and it just felt like a real moment of completion.  Not even a month later and I decided I wasn't done after all and am currently pursuing my bachelor's, which will be done concurrently with my masters.  The experience I've had with my classes this past semester has been so rewarding and I'm looking forward to the rest.

  11. I think Covid kinda squashed a lot of the hype, but they're still a fairly big deal here.  DS didn't want one when he graduated in 2022. DD did have one in 2019- open house style, lots of people in and out.   We didn't do any kind of formal invitation, we did facebook invites to people in the area.  To extended family out of town we sent graduation announcements, but no invite to the party.  It was a homeschool graduation, so no ceremony or anything to have to deal with.  Around here, the high schools limit tickets to graduation, so it's not like the whole extended family could attend anyway.

One other question… when were you a carrier? Years ago? Or relatively recent?

Recent. I delivered papers from June 2017 to August 2019.

A good carrier is a gift and worth leaving a nice tip for. The stories I would hear from my customers every time they gave me a little something, thanking me...  I had several older people who told me when I left that in the 20 years they'd been receiving the paper, the two I delivered for them were the best years of service they ever had. It was a little sad to hear, because really, it's not difficult to do.

  13. I was a rural carrier for two years and Christmas was the best time of year! Almost all of my customers left me a holiday tip.  Some of them were smaller- just $10 or $20, but I had a quite few big tippers who gave me $50 to $100. I also received quite a few gift cards to local businesses, gas cards, and a good number of delicious homemade treats.  I had around 75 customers and my second Christmas they gave me almost $2000.

ETA: I appreciated each and every one and made sure to give them all thank you cards.

  14. First, I love the sound of your spice program.  🙂  It's unique and fun.

Second, the turmeric does have a reaction to plastic-called "chemical migration".

    https://www.hilarispublisher.com/open-access/possible-adverse-implications-of-chemical-migration-from-food-pack-materials-in-india-2157-7587.1000156.pdf

From the article above, in case you didn't want to wade through:

    Quote

Corrosive nature of turmeric seems to react with the lighter plastics used for bags, making them sticky, slimy or have holes and therefore migration of chemicals to the food is likely. Similarly, most of the oils react and can break down the plastic, therefore it is advised to not to pack Indian food (especially liquid food such as tea/coffee, yogurt, spicy food like curries, kebabs and oil rick meat masala etc.,) in the plastic bags

Do you have time to purchase something different?  I would suggest Glassine bags- you can fold over the top several times and staple, and you can get them pretty small.
