You can usually find at least the Teachers manuals of AAS used. The homeschoolclassifides or homeeducatorsresource in TX they are online and only sell nice stuff

I hadn't seen the homeeducators resource before.  I just found something I needed at a good price!  Thanks!

For some reason I don’t find either dry 😂.  Diagramming is so fun.  Dry to me is taking forever to teach a lesson.  They are very concise.

I had to add that this is me to a T!  I have always enjoyed diagramming but please don't make me drag out lessons!

  3. Thank you all!  This is the feedback I wanted so I can start processing what to choose.  I used a little Rod and Staff in the past.  In some ways it was dry but the kids didn't seem to mind and I did see progress.  My memory is that it was really lacking in writing but I will look.  It may be that I just need to plan a different route for writing!  Again, one of my weakest areas in the past.  I also may just have to bite the bullet and buy AAS again!  I know I liked it and it will probably be a good follow up after LOE.

I can't find hardly any info about people moving on with LOE Essentials after Foundations.  If anyone has feedback on that I would love to hear your thoughts.

  4. I've been homeschooling for years (older kids are all in their 20's) but I am now working with my 5 year old.  The one weak area the first time around was my Language Arts. I felt it was hit or miss over the years.

My ds is doing amazing with Logic of English, I love it!  He is in level C and really confident in everything he has learned so far.  We will be close to finishing level D by next fall - I think we'll school some during the summer. Where next? I like curriculum that has small, incremental parts that I can use consistently every day. I need hand holding with the writing.  I'm not too concerned about writing next year but I'm looking ahead.   I picture him as a strong reader and he has great handwriting with a fair bit of stamina. I'm trying to think ahead in spelling, writing, grammar, etc.

Continue to LOE Foundations?  It looks dry and I can't tell how strong the writing is.  I also love diagramming (!) and don't see that coming up. I really haven't found a lot of reviews of this level.

AAS?  I used this with some of the olders.  I sold all my parts and dread buying it all again!  And then I have to figure out writing and grammar.

I'll probably be using Sonlight (I've used that most years) or Beautiful Feet for my history.  I felt Sonlight's Language Art used to be very weak but I would be interested if others think it has improved.

I've used bits and pieces of a lot of things over the year but I would prefer sticking with the same things for at least his grade school years.  We also have the option of a small private classical school in a few years of I go back to work so I want him solid and prepared.

    Thanks for all your thoughts!!

I didn't say I was glad that some people didn't come.  I also didn't accuse you of being a sissy.  Don't try to make me responsible for whatever feelings you have about other people choosing to live their lives in a way that isn't right for you.

You walked into an echo chamber.  Don't try to argue it out, they'll go for blood.

  6. My 20 yr old dd is working full time but is interested in graphic design.  She just has a vague knowledge so far and is assuming she would need to do it online. So if you just wanted to get your feet wet and figure out a little more about the degree and pick and choose a few classes, is there any classes, online colleges, etc you would recommend?

Oh good grief, seriously?  I get that technically "deface" does not specifically state "permanently" but it does say to spoil or to mar. Likewise, vandalize states "to ruin or render unusable."  I can't be the only person who thinks using such terms for the use of dry erase markers, immediately washed off after, is overkill.  If you all really think that the use of a washable marker or crayon, that is then immediately cleaned up, is equivalent to someone writing permanent graffiti on something, scratching into a surface, keying a car, writing my name on a bathroom stall, etc., then.....yea, I reiterate, Agree to Disagree and let's drop it, 'cause that is ridiculous.

And "spreading germs & chemicals with baby wipes and markers is against the law if it results in the next person in that space having damage" -- please. Baby-safe, scent-free, alcohol-free wipes are hardly likely to leave any kind of damaging residue, to the tray table or the next person in the seat. It's far gentler than any disinfecting cleaner the airline is going to wipe it down with, at the very least.

And claiming there's nothing else to be done....I didn't; I did say it was one tool of many that we used, if needed after we'd run out of paper, on some of our trips. Trips that, door-to-door, lasted over 24 hours. With a developmentally delayed preschooler, with one "under the seat" sized carry on for him that had to contain diapers, wipes, change of clothes, protein-packed snacks, and 24+ hours worth of entertainment. Which always included paper to draw on, first, but washable markers/crayons in case of accidental marks on the tray table...and when I saw how easily they came off, yes, intentional drawing on the tray table if/when the paper itself was exhausted & the other activities were not of interest.

You guys can keep debating my lawlessness if you wish, or my poor parenting, or how horribly lucky I am that none of my children have yet grown up (or partly up, because after all, they aren't even launched yet..) to be disrespectful criminal vandals what with this terrible example I set them when the youngest was small, or how the fact that they actually have grown up to be kind, thoughtful, respectful, considerate, helpful human beings that everyone who meets them, loves them, is despite/inspite of my poor decision and in no way reflects or implies they had a good upbringing (I mean, really, they aren't launched yet, so I can't honestly assess whether they're good human beings or not.....)......but I am done and over it.

I shared one anecdote from their childhood, trying to offer a different perspective on something that was mentioned up thread (merely trying to point out that just seeing someone draw on a tray table does not mean that person then actually *left* the drawing all over the tray table....), and boy, you all have made me wish I hadn't. Thanks; well done. You can bet I'll reconsider before making that mistake again.  So much for "agree to disagree" and all that......

They all really did pile on you didn't they?  One of the reasons I quit posting here but occasionally read things.  You sound like an amazing mom.  Don't let the pile on discourage you.

  8. Just encouraging you that we did this for our son.  He is still using it as he goes to school but it looks like it will work out well.  He has two roommates and they are all able to pay around $200/month less in rent than any thing else out there.  We think we will sell at a profit but even if we don't the low rent for these years will make it worth it.  The only issues have been expecting him to be the grown up and take care of all the bills etc and he's had a few not so grown up moments.  Good training for him though!

  9. Our son had this. About every week on schedule from the time he was three. Took several years to diagnose. Giving him ibuprofen as soon as the headache helped. Using ametryptolene (sp?) eventually helped break the cycle and he grew out of the worst of it at puberty. He still has some migraines but more typical. They told is that females tend to be more hormonal related.

  10. There is a new partnership between Duo and Pearson (I think) to expand the usage of Duo to college texts. It has been causing bleedover of incorrect stuff into the lessons and comments. (The volunteer moderators are not amused.) I don't know if what your daughter saw (new words not previously introduced) is a side effect or if it is a test (which Duo run all the time and only some accounts see them). We complain about some of the tests, but we (meaning mostly dd) just roll with them.

Wow, that is interesting!  How often do you see this happen?  My daughter is quick to get frustrated with something like this.  How do I go about complaining if this keeps coming up?

  11. My daughter has been using a duolingo Spanish app and really liking it.  She quit over the summer and started up this fall.  All of a sudden it is putting new words in that she hasn't learned.  Yesterday she got a translation wrong because it said it should be 'chick' not woman.  Does she have a setting wrong, is this common?  She says there have been quite a few more but doesn't remember them.

  12. Greenough Park is an amazing walk - very green with wandering paths a long a beautiful creek.  Montana Club or Jakers are both good restaurants without being extreme in price.  Lots of ethnic restaurants.  Florence Coffee or Liquid Planet are usually considered the best local coffee places.Depending what days you are here there are a number of farmer's markets with really amazing variety.
