  1. Well, I'm going to give you my two cents with a clear warning upfront that your doctor will disagree with everything I'm about to tell you, and will probably try to convince you that I'm a nutcase! But my thought is: no, your cholesterol does NOT need to be below 200.

People think of cholesterol as this evil heart-disease causing substance, but that really isn't the case. Cholesterol is a vital nutrient. It plays many important roles in health. Some of which are discussed here: http://www.westonaprice.org/knowyourfats/cholesterol-friend.html

That is why when people take on diets which decrease their intake of cholesterol, their bodies usually increase production of their own cholesterols, and their levels don't change much. If your cholesterol is 212, it's entirely possible that 212 is exactly what it needs to be.

Now, that said, I'm also making the situation more one-dimensional than it really is. One thing about cholesterol for which there is much substantiating evidence is that the higher your HDL levels, the better protected you are from heart disease, and the longer you are likely to live. Your HDL should be at least 60. On the flip side, triglyceride levels are linked with heart disease. You want that number to be as low as possible. 100 or less is, I believe, ideal. Your total cholesterol count really doesn't mean much.

I would also encourage you to check out this website, made by an international panel of doctors who believe that the medical community has done a horrible disservice to the public by perpetuating a myth that cholesterol causes heart disease. I realize that probably sounds shocking and "fringe" but check it out just to get "the other side".

    Good luck!

Wow! Thanks - I will check these out!

  2. My yearly physical is done, and the results are in...my cholesterol is slightly elevated ie, 212, when it needs to be under 200.

To be honest with you, I have never given cholesterol a thought. I have lost 50 lbs. over the last year or so, and have started exercising just this month. I know these two things will help. The dr. asked me to lose 5-10 more lbs, which I was already aiming for.

So my question for the hive is this - what dietary changes do you make to lower cholesterol? I have never paid much attention to this topic, but I would love to hear your advice. I am ready to follow - please lead me!

  3. Oh. My. Goodness! I can't believe I have missed all this up until now.

Ok - now that we are living vicariously through you - (and I love my dh dearly, but who doesn't love a little romance?!)...we need to decide on details...

What are your thoughts on the meal. I am thinking Ree's lasagna and cake are great ideas, along with her buttered bread and some salad.

What will you wear? Casual - jeans and nice t-shirt. A little more dressy? - khakis and a blouse.

Music in the background? Barry White, while good, might send the wrong signal, KWIM? Classical? Jazz? Christian? Think, girl

Entertainment? Movie after dinner? a walk around the neighborhood? Coffee on the back porch?

I just wanted to give you some things to think about until the BIG DAY. Anything else you need? We are here for you, dear!

  4. I am going to agree with you here, not give you arguments against.

We gave our older two cell phones and got rid of our land line about 1 1/2 years ago, and have never looked back. I love the ease of it, and that I can almost always get in touch with them, if need be.

The only problem I have is getting them to remember to charge their phones! Good luck with your decision! :001_smile:

  5. I am a Bible-Thumpin' Baptist :D At least, that seems to be the common classification of us! I had a friend in High-school who said, "Oh, you're one of those praying Baptists!" I didn't realize until adulthood we were considered strange!

In all seriousness though, I am a Christian. I worship a risen Savior. I believe in full-immersion baptism as a sign of identifying with Christ, but not as a means of salvation. I believe in the Bible as the literal Word of God, penned by the hands of inspired men. I believe that every story in the Bible is true, unless it was told as a parable. So, for me, yes Jonah was swallowed by a whale, Balaam was spoken to by a donkey, and Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednigo survived a firey furnace.

  6. IME, foot injuries are a strange thing. There usually isn't much done for a minor injury, but they can really stink, long term. No smelly pun intended!

I've had 2 foot injuries that I've gone to the ER for. My right one involved torn tendons, crutches, an air cast and the whole shebang. The left one wasn't "bad enough" for anything but a big ER bill. The left one is the one that still kills me every time it rains or a little person or dog steps on it! (And it's the older injury!)

I don't think you're a wimp at all. I do hope you're feeling better soon!

    Thank you so much!

I did google broken toes versus sprained toes and - after I picked myself up off of the floor (ugh, those pictures) - I came to the conclusion that I probably have a sprain...no sharp pains, pain while resting, no grinding noises **swoon**:svengo:

But I will take all the good thoughts and prayers I can get! :D

  7. Saturday, I stubbed my little toe on a shoe left in the middle of the floor. Hurt, but I have definitely hurt my toes worse in the past.

So, all week my foot has been so sore! There is a "lump" on the inside of the toe, but I don't think it is broken. It is sort of bruised, but only I really notice the bruising.

So I feel like a total wimp! I workout with a few friends, and I haven't gone walking this week because a shoe hurts. But when they ask to see it, it doesn't really look that bad. Even as I sit here typing, my foot is aching!

So tell me - am I a wimp? I do have a low tolerance to pain, but as I said, I have hurt my toes worse before and haven't gone this long in pain.

Or is just another of that long list of "Things to look forward to as you near 40" that I keep hearing about!! :D
