    Horizons > Saxon

    in Logic Stage & Middle Grade Challenges

    Have any of you had any experience switching from Horizons to Saxon math? My dd is finishing horizon 6. I know there is one more book in the horizons series, but I would like to go ahead and switch to a program that we will use in the upper grades.

     

    Was the transition easy? Did Horizons leave out anything that was crucial for Saxon?

    I am about to complete the 4th SOTW with my dds. One is in 4th grade, and one is in 6th grade. I am trying to decide what to do next. Here are my ideas:

     

    4th dd

    5 - Sonlight Eastern Hemispheres

    6 - Sonlight One-Year Condensed American History

    7-12 Veritas Press Omnibus

     

    6th dd

    7 - 12 Veritas Press Omnibus

     

    I have some concerns though.

     

    1. 6th dd has not had any separate American History

    2. 6th dd may not be able to comprehend Omnibus. (The program seems really advanced.)

    3. DH thinks I should put both 4th dd and 6th dd in Omnibus together. 4th dd is a better reader, but I think I read that the content is too advanced for a younger student. I also don't know what I would do with 4th dd if she is able to finish all 6 omnibus courses by the end of 10th grade.

     

    I have thought that I could put both girls in the sonlight courses for the next two years and then start both dd in the omnibus courses when 4th dd is in 7th grade. 6th dd could get 3 years of omnibus (one history rotation if I am reading everything correctly) and then take a separate AP class her senior year. 4th dd could complete all 6 comnibus courses. BTW, 4th dd is more advanced than 6th dd.

     

    What do you think? Do you have any ideas or experience to share? Or other great history programs to consider? Thanks for your input!

    I need car/van recommendations

    Thank you for your opinions! We are going to have to do a lot of research, but it is always helpful to hear personal opinions!

     

    Have any of you had experience buying from craigslist? I know two people here that have and have had good experiences. I am a bit leary of craigslist, though. I shop on ebay and homeschoolclassifieds, so I don't have a real reason to avoid craigslist. The site is just like newspaper ads, right?

     

    I will have to compare new prices to used, too. Las Vegas may be just as bad as SoCal!

    I would walk around your property and look for soggy ground. Do you have a sprinkler system? Ours is ten years old and we repair leaks often. Our pipes are buried, but our water is hard. The ground heats up a lot, too. Our highs are near 120 in the summer. If the main water pipe to your house is leaking then you should be able to find wet ground from that if it hasn't rained in a few days. You can look for excessive plant/weed growth, too.

    I need a different car. I don't want to buy a "new" one. I need a used car or van that gets great gas mileage (30+), will last to over 200,000 miles with minimal repairs (hopefully - know this is not a given), and has a large trunk. I would like a van for the extra seating, but I don't have to have a van. I am anti-Ford at the moment, so please don't recommend a Ford.

     

    I am replacing a Ford Windstar. It is a 2003 with 113,000 miles on it. It has tons of electrical problems. We have recently replaced its transmission, all injectors, cracked manifold, leaky head gasket, and other miscellaneous problems. It is back in the shop again, and I would like to take it out into the desert and blow it up! Ugh! (disclaimer - we used to live in AK and now live in NV; this vehicle has been through some extreme climate changes.)

     

    I have heard good things about Mitsubishi Galants. My husband and I had good luck with a Mazda Protege and a Honda Accord in the past, but we don't know anything recent about them. My dad always drove Volvos, but he knew how to work on them. Volvo has been sold once or twice in the past couple of decades, though.

     

    Any advice would be appreciated!

    nonwoven snow blanket

    Have any of you washed a nonwoven snow blanket that is used under village scenes at Christmas time? I have one that is very dusty, and I would love to throw it in the wash on delicate, but I am afraid it will disintegrate. I think mine is made of polyester, but I am worried about the glue that holds the fibers together.

    My dh is a pastor. I cannot tell you the number of times that someone has had a big emotional reaction to something from his Sunday teaching that they thought he was directly aiming at them- and he wasn't. Sometimes the source was honest conviction of the Holy Spirit. Sometimes it was harbored hurts that were festering.

     

    I gotta tell you, you guys are really worked up, and yet your only evidence that they are mad at you comes from assumptions that you are drawing out of his sermon. You need to have a DIRECT conversation with a pastor. No more of this "silent forgiving." It's not healthy. You might find out that the devil is totally playing you, and that your feelings of being judged aren't true, but lies being whispered in your ears. If you don't have a honest to goodness direct conversation with someone, you'll never know. You might be surprised at the amount of healing that could come from it.

    My dh is a pastor, too, and has been accused of preaching "at" someone in a past service. My dh does not preach with anyone in particular in mind, ever.

     

    I would talk to the pastor before leaving. If things aren't resolved after that conversation, then you can leave knowing that you tried to make amends.

     

    I will say, though, in a small church, it is hard not to pressure people to do more since there are so few people to do what the church wants done. That does not mean that the smaller church should try to do everything that a larger church does. If a church does not have enough workers for something, that could be for two reasons: people aren't willing to do more or, simply, the church should not be doing it. Each member should honestly determine their ability level to help and stick to that. Doing more causes burnout, doing less causes harm to the church.

     

    Also, I would rebell at a two-week VBS, and I am a Pastor's wife!

    Extended traveling while homeschooling

    I have taken work on long trips only for it not to get done. 5 weeks worth last winter. Ugh. Next time I will take the bare minimum. Think of it like summer. What do you do to keep their skills up over the summer? Maybe flashcards if you are in the middle of foreign language studies. If you are going to make up the rest of the work when you get back then you are just extendingyour year. Therefore make the trip fun. If you are substituting the weeks on the trip for real schooltome, then you will want more academics.

    We like putt -putt. Nature trails sound fun. The science center looks great, too. The caves might be a bit too far away unless it rains a lot. We already have plans to visit the outlet mall. Not sure about the military museums.

    Does anyone have any inexpensive ideas for vacationers in Destin? My family is going there in a few weeks, but we don't have a lot of extra money to spend. We are looking for deals and fun things to do other than spending all day every day at the beach. Thanks!

    ITBS results... How long?

    Finally got our results today-- yay! (and results are-- yay!). No email arrived as was supposed to happen; I found out by checking.back.often.

     

     

    :iagree: I got mine yesterday.

     

    Ours took a little over 2 weeks, so at least 12 business days, maybe more (we did SAT-10 and Olsat). Funny thing is I checked one day and they were processing, then the next morning got the email that they were ready online!

     

    We took the ITBS and CogAt. The results were available first thing yesterday morning.

     

    I don't think they should tell people "Ten days" if they are not able to process the tests in 10 days!

     

    I know! That is just cruel!

     

    So... the pp that can't get on the website, have you had better success since posting?

     

    I never received an email. I just kept checking the site.

    So, I sent in our ITBS tests to Bob Jones on June 1. I would have thought that Bob Jones would have received them on the following Monday. We have a lot of family in that area, and all of our mail and packages reach them in that same time frame, weekends included.

     

    Bob Jones said we are supposed to get the results within 10 business days. I still don't have ours, and I am anxious to get them back.

     

    Could any of you that have received your scores back recently tell me how long it took? I am still holding out hope for today since there are a few more "business hours" left on the East coast.

    Planning ahead for School Supplies?

    Check dollar stores for dry erase boards. We have two that are lined on one side and blank on the other. They are not much bigger than a regular size piece of paper. Don't skimp on dry erase markers, though. The cheap ones don't last long.

     

    Check out http://www.classroomdirect.com . If you spend $50, you will get free shipping. You can buy reams of lined newspaper print for $4. I also LOVE their 1 cm graph paper.

     

    Highlighters and flags are essential supplies! Good eraser tops, too. I agree with the pp about not buying the cheap ones of those.

     

    Lots of card stock! Lots of index cards. A 3-ring hole puncher is used regularly at my house. Rainbow resource has a crayon sharpener that is great if your kids prefer sharp crayons.

     

    If your kids are younger than high school aged, stick with wide-ruled paper. It will be easier for you to read their writing.

     

    We also use a timer regularly. And rubber bands to hold index cards together.

     

    If you need a cd player in your school room, back to college sales will include those.

    Oh. I just read the back story. Sounds like you are dealing with a very insecure person. Anyone audacious enough to tell you how to live your life must be overcompensating for her own inadequacies. Good riddance! I know it hurts now, but there are other potential friends out there. Others who will not treat you like a project nor try to take advantage of you.:glare:
