  1. At the moment, no our marriage isn't hard work. But I'm a horrible communicator, so our marriage suffers when I bottle up my emotions and vent it out in other ways. He's the one that constantly tries to keep the communication lines open. So, I think marriage entirely depends on the personalities involved. If both are willing to believe in the basic good and fundamental love of the other person, any feelings or hurt can be easy to let go and leave behind.

I would be one of those people who has said the "marriage is hard work" statement. It depends on how you define the word "hard." Humbling, maybe. Someone who knows you completely to know when you're full of it. At times, yes it hard to swallow my pride and admit I'm wrong. I don't want to break up the cold ice of an argument and let go of my emotions. But that is my flaw and because of that, our marriage is hard work at times.

With all that said, I have a deeper love and respect for my husband than I did when we got married. I love that man. And because of that our momentary squabbles are quickly realized for what they are... communication issues.

Easy mostly and hard at times. Comfortable and content all the time.

  2. I think it's probably best that your husband keep his distance from both of them. Let her get out of that emotional attachment and let the husband work through the hurt without either of you there, unfortunately. But if you want to reach out and let her know that there's no hard feelings or you're not upset, I don't think that that's a bad idea. I would probably keep my distance out of respect for their marriage and let her approach you if she wants.

I'm sorry you're in the difficult place of losing a friendship.

  3. A favorite in our family is teriyaki chickpeas from happyherbivore.com

It's a can of chickpeas (or you can used dried & cooked chickpeas) and teriyaki sauce. You're taking a shortcut with the canned teriyaki sauce, but depending on what brand you find it has no weird ingredients or you can make your own. I serve it with brown rice and a side of vegetables (broccoli usually). Here's a recipe from her site: http://happyherbivore.com/recipe/spicy-teriyaki-chickpeas/

But you don't have to add the other stuff. It's really good!

  4. The person who posted it has a username of "John Tucker". I found the link with a google search, but don't want to post it here since it is a political site. If you want to see the whole thing, just copy/paste the original quote into google.

That's interesting. I guess all I met by that was that the simplistic reduction of a woman who stays home to teach the children as an "unqualified housewife" struck me as a bit gender biased. But I've heard women use the same argument about the need to be a certified teacher in order to be qualified to homeschool.

  5. That's still a congressman, right? (hoping I didn't misspeak). And supposedly he is in the running for VP with Rommney.

I did hear that, too. I think the term congressman refers to a representative? But I knew what you meant. Someone who is NOT the governor. ;)

  6. well...right now the governor is pretty much the most hated figure I can think of...but he won't be there forever. I'm a democrat, but even a lot of republicans hate him. I wont' go into it, but yeah...he's not popular. Not sure what else you mean by state government.

I had to look up the governor. I thought it was still Rubio. When was the election? I guess that shows how much I pay attention. NW Florida is conservative country. Republicans outnumber Dems in our county 3 to 1. (I'm a moderate independent... delightfully indifferent.)

Yes, it is! It wasn't coming up when I'd search for them on Google Maps. Thank you!

Good. :001_smile: I thought there might be a universal list of GO churches and the ones around here might not be of the right 'denomination' for lack of a better word.

  7. Well, there isn't a single GOC in the entire NW of Florida and that is a huge deciding factor.

I don't know much about Greek Orthodox, is that one?

    And this one: http://www.annunciationgoc.org/index.shtml

We have a Greek festival put on by the Greek Orthodox community (I thought it was...), I think there is a community around here, I'm not sure how big it is.

  8. 1. Where do you personally think is the best place to live in Florida?

I have lived in Florida since I was in elementary school. I grew up in Orlando, moved to NW Florida in 2003. I like the culture of central Florida, more diverse, more stuff to do. But I personally think NW Florida is beautiful. It takes a little more to find stuff to do, and you have to like nature... because that's it, in my experience at least. Bigger cities might have more stuff, but I live in a fairly small town.

    2. What is the cost of living there like, compared to the northeast or Pennsylvania?

I don't know, cheaper I would imagine. I've never lived anywhere but Florida for longer than a few months. Depends on where you live. There are pockets of expensive towns and cheaper towns in the same vicinity.

    3. Are you familiar with the Tampa/St. Petersburgh/Spring Hill area? Opinions?

No. I have a few friends and family from there. The thing I've found is, generally speaking, Florida is Florida. Removing south Florida from the equation :tongue_smilie: Jacksonville, Tampa, Orlando are basically the same. The difference might come in some nitty gritty detail like housing prices or neighborhoods. Someone with more experience can disagree with me. But that's just the way I see it.

    4. Are you familiar with the Jacksonville area? Opinions?

Like above, if I were to pick between Jacksonville, Orlando or Tampa, I'd pick Orlando.

    5. Are large reptiles a regular problem (aka, is allowing young children to play in the yard a problem or do they have to be constantly supervised because of this)?

We lived behind some woody areas in Orlando growing up. You could here the alligator croaking at night. It wasn't terrifying, you just knew not to go out into the dark. But they aren't an issue, just know your surroundings. If you live near nature, you might have to be more aware. But a suburb, nah.

    6. Sinkholes...I've been told that this is common all over Florida...true? So if your house goes into one, you're just SOL, right? (apparently, Spring Hill is rampant with this issue)

My grandparents live in the Ocala area, their subdivision is the middle of the forest, they have sinkhole problems. That's all I know about them. I think it has something to do with the root system being removed and the soil sinks... maybe? We don't have any issues that I know of in NW Florida.

    7. Are there any actual towns in Florida? I'm finding only a ton of gated communities and suburbs. HOA's seem to be the rule (and you all know how I feel about HOA's).

? I don't live in an HOA suburb. We are looking at some townhouses in the north of the county, and HOAs seem to be more common. It seems in the newer communities or parts of town there are more gated communities and HOAs. Look at older areas and you'll probably find what you're looking for.

    8. If you virtual school, could you tell me about it?

Florida Virtual School is all I know about, and I don't know much.

    9. Compared to Georgia and South Carolina, do you prefer FL over these two or would you prefer one of the other two?

Personally, I'm not a big fan of Florida. After all that, I know. I'd rather live somewhere where the humidity isn't so insufferable. But maybe you're catching me at the wrong time of year.

That's all. Of all Florida, I'm most partial to NW Florida. I can tell you more about this area if that's a consideration. If not, I'll keep my opinions to myself. ;)

  9. It's funny that this topic should come up. I just told dh on Monday that we should pack up and move. I've been like that forever, when my husband mentions job opportunities in other cities, I'm all about it! I'll even look up houses, cost of living, things to do... but it never happens. I think this past week I asked at an opportune time of peak stress and frustration at work. He's actually giving it consideration.:001_smile:

  10. I've never been to the science center, but I've heard some things about it. It's a bit run down. It'll probably only take a few hours to go through it.

Trails: Turkey Creek in Niceville, Fred Gannon State Park, Eden Gardens.

There are a few trails on the Eglin reservation, but you have to buy a year permit(I think $12/ea). There's this website with NWF trails, some I didn't know about. But I think the one's I listed are the closest.

Marianna Caverns are neat, but a drive. If you do head out that way, check out Falling Waters State Park. It's in Chipley. You could probably do both in a day.

Marler Park on Okaloosa Island is our favorite bayside beach/park.

In Destin, Clement Taylor Park is a nice park and beach.

There's a huge kid's park in Niceville with a splash pad. But if you're not near there (you have to go across the bridge with a pricey toll), Destin Commons has a splash pad, but it's more for little kids.

If Pensacola is near enough, look into Ft. Barrancas. Unless you or your family is specifically interested in aviation or military history, I'd pass up the military museums. Zzzzz... The Air Armament Museum near Eglin, north of FWB is free to walk around the park with the planes, so that might be interesting to just go and look.

  11. Destin... no. Everything 'fun' is expensive. You might take a day trip to Seaside and 30A, really quaint, small town feel. I love it there. In Ft Walton you can go to Goofy Golf, it's cheaper and smaller than anything in Destin, but fun. Shopping if you like to do that in Sandestin, to the east. There are a few nature trails. What do you like to do?

  12. My son has a simple receiving blanket. What makes it more awesome is that he isn't particular about which one, as long as it's the receiving blanket material. We tried to give him a t-shirt once as an emergency blanket, same size but I guess it just doesn't feel the same. We have them stashed away everywhere we go frequently.

Our librarian once said she met a girl that carried around a specific dvd case as her "blankie."

  13. 2 hours west of Tallahassee (not very close, sorry) it's been rainy and windy but not too bad. We did notice that the water level is very high, so I wouldn't be surprised if there was flooding. Also, it was very gusty when we were driving earlier today.

A quick look at the weather channel, it shows that Tallahassee is further in the threat area. I would hate to drive in this weather.

  14. What are you doing this weekend? Well, dh had a stomach bug yesterday, so nothing. We went to church this morning (we're church shopping at the moment), my son screamed like a banshee when we tried to drop him off, so I picked him up and left. So... probably not that church.

What is the temperature where you are? It's nice and cool... because a tropical storm is just below us. It's also rainy and windy. Overall, a pretty boring weekend.

And today's random question - if you could have a super power, what would it be? Hmm... when I was little, I thought I was telepathic, but really I guess I was extra observant. I could always tell people's emotions and read faces. I don't know what I would be now though...
