  1. We are using Mastering Biology for AP Bio, using the Campbell Biology book. But it looks like it's also available for 7th and 8th editions of "Concepts and Connections." You can indicate the book you have during registration. Mastering Biology includes videos, quizzes, and chapter tests. I believe we paid $60 for a year's access.

  2. If you click on the score range, a pop-up comes with this info: "A score range is an estimate of how your scores might vary if you took this assessment several times within a short period, without gaining new knowledge or skills."

  3. There are also verses set to music. Our family likes these particular albums: http://www.seedsfamilyworship.com/ The Power of Encouragement album has a really nice song with a nativity passage if you want to learn something for Christmas--it's the verses where the angels appear to the shepherds.

Thank you for this recommendation! I'm happy to see Amazon has several of them on Prime Music!

  4. Here's the policy I received from Drexel today:

Homeschool applicants must provide the equivalent of a high school transcript with course or subject titles, duration of study for each title, content of study for each title, and an assessment of performance or “grade.†Preferably, the courses completed at home are part of a curriculum developed and evaluated by a nationally recognized diploma-granting organization or agency or sponsoring public high school.

If an official transcript from a state homeschool association or sponsoring public high school is not available, homeschool applicants must obtain and submit a GED or a college transcript showing the completion of 24 or more college credits at the time of enrollment as confirmation of completing a generally acceptable secondary school curriculum. Individual homeschool transcripts with date of completion do not suffice as official proof of graduation.â€

  5. That's funny because I just emailed Drexel last week about the same policy. My dd is intrigued by their accelerated BS/MS program but we homeschool independently so she won't meet their homeschooled requirements. I was also told the Dean is reviewing the policy. Maybe the more they hear from us, the more likely they'll change their policy.

I've been corresponding with an admissions rep at Drexel, which has a similar policy. I've been told that they are reviewing the policy and will have some kind of an update soon. But I was hoping to hear something from them by the end of August and it is now the end of September.

In the process of looking at other schools, that were less restrictive, I think that Drexel has moved to the back burner. I'm not sure at this point if ds will end up applying there. It looks like a pretty cool school, but I don't want him painted into a corner by problematic school policies. I certainly don't want him to get a GED unless it is the pathway into something amazing.

FWIW, I was a bit nervous about contacting the Drexel staff, but also felt that I could do so in part because my ds didn't have his heart set on the school. There are some schools that I haven't bothered to bring to my ds's notice like Pittsburg and UMass Amhurst because of stories from other families about difficulties with homeschool applications.

  6. If your student took the AP exam for a class and did well, do you weight his grade? I've always been ambivalent about grades. I actually don't assign them until high school. But it seems the more I read about college and scholarship applications, so much hinges on grades. I'm wondering if not weighting will put my kids at a disadvantage. So I'm here for the hive's wisdom. What do you do about grades?
