  1.

But I do know that I need this sense of community and understanding and the reassurance that our crazy existence isn't just us.

this, this, oh YES, this!  This is what I have found on the private forum - I know I'm not alone, and I know it's not going to turn up in some random internet searh in 15 years time.

  2. Do you think it is open to the types of questions the posters on this thread seem to have? If something exists, I don't want spread people too thin.

I don't know what you mean.

The forum is private = not searchable so it's been very good for venting / asking those questions I can't ask in general population.  Being a forum we "get to know" each other and our kids.  Those with older kids help younger, etc.  I like it...it has certainly saved my sanity to be able to talk in "safety" with those who get it, without those who don't weighing in.

  3. KiwiK, we missed entries for those this year, but hope to enter next year.

We have withdrawn all entries for ICAS and lodged a formal complaint about the discrimination toward homeschooled kids.  Dig Tech and Science already arrived so I let the kids have a look at them - DD got a perfect score on Science and DS missed 1, both are well within medal range for dig tech too, so I can now say that, EAA actuallY HAS stolen at least one medal from my kids this year, not just might have.  Sigh.

  4. There's a new trick here I've met a few times now, where  pair of (usually) young women come to the door asking for help with their "homework" from "Language School" (they have all been ESL speakers, almost all Asian).  They then produce a bible and start asking if you understand the meaning of certian verses.  UGH!  I chalk it up to another layer of the dishonesty I keep seeing in religion.

    Sounds good.

Unfortunately, I live in a fortress. This is an old stone church we converted. Poured concrete walls covered in river walk. In good weather I can keep the window open, but in bad weather, yikes...we can't hear anything outside!!

entirely OT, I would LOVE to see photos if it weren't too invasive!  Your house sounds amazing.

  5. I need to update this.  As of the letter I received today, and after an afternoon of pointless discussion, home schooled students are not eligible for medals, full stop.  If you want to eligible you have to get a school to enter them as part of their school, not as homeschoolers.  Of course they didn't bother telling us this when I asked for the terms and conditions at the beginning of the year, or until after we had paid for entires.  I am not very happy this evening.

  6. Good job, Grover's LO!

I think results are out shortly after the close of the comp.

We have a supervisor organised for tomorrow. I don't think DS will do spectacularly (he's used to team-solving where I scribe), but it's cool that he made it this far. Will be interesting to see how well our work with BA and mathy games translates to exam conditions.

I'm going to be interested too - DS Is my independent math kid now, Life of Fred + Khan.  I don't think I've directly *taught* him maths for a year or more... some times he brings me something to talk through, but mostly he explores on his own.  So no idea how this will go for him!

I have one supervisor for tomorrow for the math and another for Thursday for the algorithms. This is his first math competition so he's excited. I think we heard about it on this forum just days before round 1 deadline. So thanks!

I was a meanie and made him do both today, one after the other.  His dad says he was tired by the end.

  7. I sent the boy to work with his daddy to do the round 2 challenges under the supervision of someone in the office.  I got an email from just now saying: "Mum, I did it!  I worked to the very last second, but I did it!"  I think I'll take from that that he enjoyed it.  How long for results, does anyone know?

  8. For those who say Miquon, have you actually used it with a 4 year old? I think my son has average fine motor skills but he was so frustrated by the dexterity needed. Lining up 17 white rods to measure in the teens was his last straw.

yep, used it from 3.5 with DS, more like 4 with DD.  I provided a ruler or other straight edge to line up against, or we did it as a team if it was really too much.  Both kids when right through Miquon in about 2 - 2.5 years.  It's the best start I could have hoped for for them.
