  1. I am taking my ds out of PS and will be homeschooling next year for 5th grade. He is gifted but has not had his curriculum accelerated up until this point. He has, of couse, learned a lot on his own and from us without a formal curriculum. I am trying to put some thought into next years work. I am thinking that he needs to be challenged in math and science, his strongest and favorite subjects. He needs a lot of work in writing including handwriting, learning to type, and actually writing original material. This is his academic weakness - I think he is dysgraphic. His reading and verbal reasoning are very strong. So for history I was thinking I should choose something that will be a lot of fun - reading, projects, sharing with the rest of the family. But then I think maybe I should be challenging him to higher level of thinking. I guess they aren't mutually exclusive but I don't know where to go here... Any thoughts? Any Curriculum ideas? Thanks, Tammie
  2. Okay - so 2.5 hours is not so far. I am trying to see if I can get there on Friday but it is my kids last day of Public School and I feel like they should be able to say their goodbyes. They get dismissed at 9:30 am so after the goodbyes I could head down and be there by 1pm. Now if I can find someone to watch the kids... I am looking forward to learning more and meeting more homeschoolers. Tammie
  3. I am considering going to the RFWP convention at Valley Forge but can only go Saturday. It will be a 2.5 hour drive. I am new to HS and wonder if it is worth the drive for a day? Thanks, Tammie
  4. I am planning on homeschooling my son for 5th grade next year. He is a very strong math student and loves math. His PS has been doing Terc Investigations this year (and something else before that). I am very strong in math as well and feel confident teaching it but I am wondering what might be a good program for him. He does not like repetition or review and he learns concepts very quickly. Thanks so much. Tammie
  5. Thanks for the help and advice! T
  6. Homeschoolers are the most amazing helpful people! Perhaps it is because they are so used to teaching others.:001_smile: Thanks for the suggestions and advice and please keep them coming. And yes, we are a Christian family and will consider Christian and secular curricula. Tammie
  7. After considering homeschooling for years, I am finally making the leap with my oldest child - my 10yo gifted son. He is completing 4th grade in ps and it has been boring him to tears. I really need some help with curriculum choices. There are so many options that I don't know where to start. My son hates repetition. He loves to learn - be engaged, question, challenge and be challenged, make connections, etc. He does not like busywork. Loves mind puzzles, logic, building, inventing. Strong math and verbal reasoning. Loves math. He loves to read, not so much when it comes to texts. He enjoys learning by doing more than watching or listening. He is a hard worker when engaged but gets angry when forced to do what he considers pointless. He hates writing and struggles. I believe he has dysgraphia. He has happily opted to leave his school because they refuse to modify the curriculm for him at all. Thanks in advance for any help! Tammie
  8. After considering homeschooling (and reading this forum) for years, I am finally making the leap with my oldest child - my 10yo son. He is completing 4th grade in ps and it has been boring him to tears. I knew going into this that choosing a curriculum would be very difficult for me as I have a hard type choosing from so many options. I would love some advice on where to start. My son is a fast learner, "gifted" ( I hate typing that word) intellegence, and hates repetition. He loves to learn - be engaged, question, challenge and be challenged, make connections, etc. He does not like busywork. Loves mind puzzles, logic, building. Strong mathmatical and verbal reasoning. He loves to read novels, not so much when it comes to texts. He enjoys learning by doing more than watching or listening. He is a hard worker when engaged. He hates writing and struggles. I believe he has dysgraphia. There are so many options and I feel so overwhelmed. I starting to find myself awake at 2am thinking about this! Thanks in advance for any help! Tammie
