  1. On their FAQ page it says the following:

I'm a teacher, coach, or parent, how do I start using the site with my student(s)?

First things first: you need an account, and you need to be signed in on the Khan Academy. So, sign in or sign up. Once you've got an account you can actually start getting students to add you as their coach.

The next step: every student that you want to coach needs an account as well. Students over 13 can sign up for Google or Facebook accounts immediately.

If your students are under 13:

You currently have two options: you can sign your school up for Google Apps for Education, which will help you provide each student with a Google account that can be used with Khan Academy, or you can have your students' parents individually create accounts for each student on either Google or Facebook. We are constantly working to improve this situation, but that's the best we've got at the moment (sorry!).

If you already have Google Apps for Education accounts but aren't able to use them to sign in on the Khan Academy, you might need to upgrade your account.

Once this is done, each student will need to identify you as their coach. There are detailed instructions and screenshots on the Coach page or you can find them here.

ETA: I hope that helps. I just spent the last hour on Khan Academy working on Practice problems. It's been so fun to go back and see where I have holes in my own education before I tackle my children's.

Thank You. I have tried all those things and you have to be 18 to get a google account and 13 for a facebook account. I really don't want my child's profile on FB at age 9 and I can't seem to get around the google age...usually these kinds of things are not a problem for me. I was able to link my FB page and it says I can add students or a coach to my page but you have to follow those instructions and it's not working???

  2. I am really wanting to start my kids using the Khan Academy and don't know how to sign u p the kids. They are both under 13 so you either have to make a FB account or a google account but as soon as you put their correct ages in, it won't let you complete the process. I really don't want a fake FB page out there anyways with their names on it. I have signed up and I am listed as the coach but can't complete the student info. Does anyone know how to do this?

    Thanks In Advance!

  3. Update...deleting my dd's story. It really bothered me that 60 people had read it and only one person responded. I was just hoping for some constructive feedback.

This is a first draft of a story that my 10 yo wrote a few days ago. She is in 4th grade and we have been HS for about 5 months. I am just wanting some feedback. I think her writing is very creative for her age but it sometimes the content of some of her stories disturbs me, not sure if I am over reacting or not. The story is not finished yet but here it is. Thank you for any feedback.

BTW - spelling is bad, I know. I just purchased a spelling program that we are going to work through over the summer.

  4. I am still new to this board but I am loving all the info on here and I am excited to share what I have learned as well. We are going to be moving into a 3 bedroom unit over the summer that has an separate dining space that I am thinking of using as our "classroom". Right now we use the dining room but it doesn't really feel like a learning space. Since there will be a an area for bar stools in the new unit, I am thinking of just making this dining space as our classroom. Do you have a special "classroom" in your house. Can you post pics of what your space looks like. The girls do their work in other areas of the house too and sometimes we go outside but I really want a central location for books, resources and all their school stuff.

    TIA

  5. My name is Michele and I have two daughters that I started HS in January. It has been quite the roller coaster for us but I am so happy that we are finally doing this, I have wanted to for so long but resisted because they were doing well is PS. When my 4th grader started experiencing all kinds of drama at school and it was really emotionally overwhelming for her, she pleaded with me to HS her...and I am!

Just starting to make my plans for next year. We belong to a charter school, so I am not completely doing this alone but I am finding that there are so many choices out there and I am learning so much. I just finished reading The Story of The World vol. 1 and I loved it!

Anyways...the girls are really HAPPY now and I see such a change in their health, their attitudes, their relationship with each other and their goals for their future.

    So...Hello! :lurk5:

  6. I haven't posted before and I just started HS my girls in January but I am already making plans to change things up for next year. I will be going from 30 hours a week to working about 19 hours over a 4 day work week. I think that will help things. I am also going to try and do a 4 day work week which we tried this year and it went well. I use Fridays for Field Trips and other things that come up and we also do our test taking on Fridays. I am also going to lighten the load of books that we have, meaning that I am going to use only an online program for math and writing and then use the standard books for History and LA but supplement with other reading material and resources. I am also going to do enroll them in some kind of science class...because that is not my forte! They are both going to study Missions and they are both going to do Spanish.

That's it for now...the plan changes as I get more information from more experienced teachers!

    :001_smile:

BTW- the girls are going into 4th and 5th grades
