Here are some ideas on my Pinterest board about creative handwriting solutions. Good luck!

Ooooh! I'd love to hear Dr. Cotter speak. I'm jealous!

This wouldn't help with cubes, but here's how you could do square numbers with crackers.
-
You could create an "I Read/You Read" box.

Have you heard of "The Advent Conspiracy"?

Sorry, but I don't buy this "magical brain click" suddenly happening at 6.5 one bit.

It sounds like Waldorf thinking, which has its passionate defenders.
Binip, I was very interested in how you described redshirting in your district. You painted a very detailed description of a frustrating situation. :(

That's just it...if you moved to an area populated with educated, literate parents who speak to their children, provide 'enrichment', and develop their children's thinking skills, you get a whole different distribution than the child who has no adult actively parenting and is running the streets. It's been very quietly noted here, a diverse area of the nation, that we have zero 'average' students...we have a bimodal distribution of nonclassified students....disadvantaged and advantaged. Mother's education level and presence in the household is the biggest correlator with success. Fast forward to today, when public school has eliminated advanced classes and placement by instructional need, and you see why there is a 20 way tie for valedictorian, and why there is a tremendous demand for honors seats that the politicians refuse to open. So tremendous that some groups have opened their own private schools to get around the poor education offered to students who can't get an honors seat, and of course people homeschool and use online coursework for the same reason.
The current first grade objectives are too 'lite' for advantaged, and too 'heavy' for disadvantaged students.
So well said!

How'd you do it Sarah?

I'm changing the name so I'm not doing a copyright infringement, but otherwise, here goes:
"Bob has 10 coins in his pocket (no silver dollars). He does not have exact change for a dollar, a half-dollar, a quarter, a dime, or a nickel. How much money does Bob have in his pocket?"
???
If it was asking for the most possible quantity, I could figure that out. Otherwise, I'm stuck. HELP PLEASE!
P.S. This is from 3rd-5th grade homework, Continental Math League.

Sometimes learning to clean your room is the biggest mission of all!

It is well written Jen. We miscarried last spring and didn't even know that we were expecting and were miscarrying until I saw the baby as I was flushing the toilet. How I didn't know is beyond me and it hurts that I flushed that little one down. A friend has told me repeatedly that it's like a death at sea and a funeral at sea.
For those of you wondering what to say, outside of condolences, ask if they named the baby and don't be afraid to say the name.
:(

So..... I'm super nervous today. An article I wrote about what it's like to have a miscarriage is a guest post on "What to Expect", the website that goes with the "What to Expect When You're Expecting" series.
I'd love to hear your thoughts, because I'm really nervous about sharing. I mean, really nervous. :scared:

Our church is just now moving to be able to offer with credit cards or debit cards, and people are really worried about it.

Very exciting!

Personally, I had a horrible experience on the Davidson boards. (Hopefully the moderation has improved since then.)
You don't need to be a homeschooler to add your two cents or ask questions here. Welcome to HIVE!

All the previous posters have said what I would say. I'll only add, if TV and computers can solve this problem for you, go for it. Talking Words Factory 1 and 2 (Code Word Capers), are great. There is also "Meet the Phonics" which is good too.
I've got some more ideas on my blog. Good luck!

Triangular crayons might also be a way to go. They have them at The Old Spaghetti Factory when you order the kids menu. Whenever we go there for dinner I think "Ooooh! These are really cool!"

Hmmm.. Go Math? Is that published by Houghton Mifflin? Do you have access to the "Think Central" website?
-
I have started one for my blog, but it is not closed. Still, if you're interested, here you go.

My ideas are mainly for younger kids, but a lot of them could be adapted for first graders too. I have a list up on my blog. A morning message on a white board would be a really easy way to start. That would just take five minutes a day. Good luck!

It depends. Are you 100% certain you've stopped praising him for sounding out CVC words? If so, for how long? Maybe he needs a bit more time to realize that you are not excited about that any more. ;)

If your first grader is tired, I would honor that and not do anything with a workbook. Instead, I'd sign him up for Dreambox Math for one month, and then reevaluate. I have some more Afterschooling and math ideas on my blog, in case you're interested.

Are the Common Core Standards not coming to your daughter's school OneMom? Our school has recently added more grammar because of them.
After school routine for Grade 2

Here are my grade 1-4 Afterschooling plans. My top recommendation would be to have Grandma or Grandpa buy the Story of the World audio discs for Christmas presents. Then you can listen to them in the car.
