  1. If that bothers you, you should read about how they make the orange juice! It's awful. Did you ever stop to think about how they have fresh orange juice all year round, all over the world? IIRC, it involves large vats of orange juice that end up being re-flavored with "natural flavors"... that is how the different brands of OJ have their own signature tastes...

:iagree: We very rarely have juice in the house.

  2. How frustrating!

I accidentally bought a bottle of juice like that last time I went shopping. It wasn't tropicana, it was that company that makes blended 100% juice/vegetable blends. Can't remember the brand. When I drank it for the first time, I realized something was wrong. I look at the bottle. "lite!" "50% less sugar!" or something like that. Yes, it was the same juice, at the same price, only half watered down. I don't even think extra sweetener was added. Just water and juice.

  3. I'm assuming you get that question because you have "a lot" of kids?

I get the opposite "Your son is growing up so fast, when's the next baby?" I've taken to answering with "Well, I'm actually having fertility issues right now" Honest to God. Random person who I don't know (or even an acquaintance or friend) wants to ask me that kind of question, they can deal with the awkwardness of that kind of answer. Yes, even at my place of worship, even to people in the more conservative crowd.

I'd love a big family, but I guess it's just not God's will for us at this point in life.

A few hours (minutes?) after my son was born, I was like "That was fun, let's do that again!" (no sarcasm) So in your situation, I would probably say something like "Well, giving birth is just so much fun, I want to do it as many times as I can!"

To religious people/at church, I would say something like "kids are such a great blessing, you can just see the miracles of God when you look at their cute innocent faces, and I love to be surrounded with the miracles of God."

I do vote for saying something that makes the asker look strange. In my book, you are at least a little strange if you are not very close to me and you are inquiring about my plans for my uterus.

  4. I took off .5 point per question for spelling if they misspelled words like "Michigan" or "glacier" or another word that was written on the test papers. Students had unlimited time to finish, but finished well within an hour.

ETA: All of these students are coming to me from public or private schools. Their parents prefer private school education to my preference for a more relaxed homeschool style.

  5. Thanks. This is my first time teaching 3rd grade social studies, and it's hard to figure out whats normal when you have such a small class size. I was told these kids were advanced, so we're using a 4th grade text/tests that I've simplified a little bit. I do plan to give them all a re-take, though I may modify the test a bit if necessary. The classes I teach are supposed to be rigorous, FWIW, but I shouldn't have otherwise smart third graders failing their class! I'll have to start giving homework I think, and I'll just make it optional practice.

  6. ...could you do me a HUGE favor?

Assuming that they studied all of the info covered by this test, would you expect your DC to be able to do well on it?

    http://www.easytestmaker.com/Services/Document/94864A0E3901492BAD1D4B9EE934B2F0.pdf

I teach a class of fewer than 6 students (all third graders) and I gave them this test after finishing a unit spanning 10 hours over 3 weeks and no homework. The average grade was a C.

  7. Maybe change your wording?

There's a difference between teaching it as Truth and teaching it as "this is how scientists classify people" I think that if he understands that people are classified as being in kingdom animalia because of the physical similarities they share with animals, and why humans are classified as mammals because of the similarities they have with mammals, maybe even going so far as to explain how studying how the brains and systems of other mammals work can help us understand how human brain and systems work.

Perhaps when you test him/ask him questions about it, rephrase it so that the question doesn't seem to imply fact. i.e. instead of asking "Which kingdom do humans belong in?" say "Which kingdom to most scientists believe humans belong in?" Or teach him that sometimes his worksheets and tests will ask him for an answer that he doesn't believe, and that sometimes the worksheet/test is only asking for the widely held opinion/the opinion from his textbook. And that there are many answers in science, but the answers that most people learn are the ones that most scientists agree on.

I do not believe in evolution, but when the time comes to study that part of the science curriculum, I will explain our beliefs on the subject, and make sure he understands that a lot of other people have another belief about the origin of man. I do think it is important for kids to understand and know the well-known popular opinions in science and the world, but for them to believe the teachings of our religion.

    HTH!

  8. My DH does this. He isn't a native English speaker, and he can't see the difference between a word's dictionary meaning and a word's connotation. It drives me bonkers. :grouphug:

I've tried to explain it to him, but in the moment, he wants nothing to do with it. Later on, I can sometimes get him to understand that we have to be careful choosing our words because "yeah right" doesn't mean the same thing as "yeah, you're right."

  9. Maybe softly explain to them that writing a petition wouldn't be the first step - that they should try writing a letter/email or arranging a meeting to talk to the staff and voice their concerns. Perhaps if your classmates had the same insights as you do, they would understand the situation better. I'm definitely NOT saying you should pass along info that was confided to you, but saying something like "maybe you should ask the staff why they're not ____, first" might help.

  10. I didn't get a ring sling until my only DC was probably over a year old? older? Didn't work for me at that age. For the time period when baby is nursing constantly and can't quite sit up yet, I carried him in a polyester scarf-weight short wrap(about the length of a ring sling,) kinda like a rebozo, but it was see through. I tied it in a slip knot (

    )

After about 3-4 months, especially for sleeping, but sometimes for nursing, I loved my mei tai. I bought the mei tai baby brand because I didn't like the idea of buckles, and because their's were cheap back then.

I bought cotton cloth to make my own wrap from joanns. It wasn't as stretchy as the moby, but I wasn't able to figure it out on the back until my DS was close to a year old. When it comes to wraps, it's practice makes perfect. I am "plus sized" and it helped for me to just tie the (not-too-stretchy) wrap on me loosely, stick DS in, then tighten the straps. With a stretchy wrap(moby), it should be a piece of cake to squeeze baby in the wrap.

  11. One of these days I'll have to retell the story about the crazy landlord I had in college who actually moved into our house with us and then threatened to murder us when I didn't do the lunch dishes right away one day. :glare: And did I mention he had teenage daughters and they were forced to sleep in his bed with him at night? *shudder* Darn near needed therapy after that one. Makes our current landlord and his refusal to fix anything at all seem rather pleasant.

  12. I print MM all the time on my home printer without problem. Is your ink running low? I print 5-10 pages at a time and never have problems unless I'm running out of ink.

:iagree: some(all?) printers get "tired" from printing too many sheets at once. maybe try printing only a few at a time? or don't print them in color if that's possible.

  13. Yesterday, my 4 year old was in her Cozy Coupe when it tipped over. She's done this before, but this time she landed on her hand somehow. She cried a lot more than she usually cries and continued to be sad about it for about an hour. This is my kid that whines for like 30 seconds when she scrapes her knees, so I was taking it pretty seriously. After about an hour or two, she calmed down and was fine the rest of the night except for a few times when she put her weight on her hand. We're pretty sure it is her wrist that hurts. Oh, and she's not verbal enough to tell us much except, "arm hurts."

There's no swelling or anything, but if we squeeze her wrist, it hurts her a lot. She is mostly playing with it, but every now and then she'll use it just right and start crying again.

    So main points:

    No swelling

    No bruising

Hurts when she puts her weight on it

    Hurts when squeezed by us.

Can move her hand and fingers and is using it

She has a crazy high threshold for pain and she is in pain with this more than anything I've seen before.

Should I bring her to the ER? We don't have access to an urgent care facility, and I'd have to wait until Monday for her doctor.

Do you have the option of calling her doctor? If it were my son, I would call my his ped's cell phone. I would probably take him to the ER if I didn't have that option, and I'm really not the type of mom to rush to the ER or even the doctor's office.

Someone I know once fell and hurt her back. She has a high tolerance for pain and it took her 3 days of having a sore back, in bed/walking on hands and knees before she finally went to the ER. Turns out she had broken her back.

  14. around here, retirement/nursing homes and group homes for people with mild mental disability are always looking for volunteers to either keep company/talk to/play games with with the residents or do mundane tasks like weed out dry bingo markers.

Another option might be tutoring younger children? Maybe helping out in/for a preschool or kindergarten classroom? I believe teachers often need help pre-cutting craft activities.

Our area is always hosting "clean up the river days"

You could go on a trash cleaning hunt. People apparently are constantly dropping papers and grocery bags in our grocery store parking lot. This trash gets blown out of the parking lot and against a fence at the very far end of the lot. You only notice it if you look for it, but it looks really bad. Some playgrounds in our area are really messy too.

  15. We got the magic mouse, but since the iMac is DH's toy, I didn't know there was another option. I thought it was really cool. It works fine on a blank sheet of white paper, if you do get it, and use it with a glass desk, you could try taping a piece of paper to the underside of the desk IF it doesn't work without it.

The thing I hate most about the wireless stuff is how much battery power it eats up. We have rechargeable batteries JUST for the iMac.

However, something happened to the magic mouse (I couldn't say for sure, though it either involved DS spilling something on it, or DH gave it to someone) and we have a USB mouse with it now.

I liked the mouse option for letting DS use the computer. I liked the magic mouse because it was somewhat like my trackpad though.

  16. U of m museums - we like the natural history one ok

    Matthai botanical gardens

    Nichols arboretum

    AA hands on museum

    Leslie science and nature center

All are free with te exception of the hands on museum

If you go to the farmers market on saturday morning/early afternoon you can chill and walk around in crowds and see some street preformers. Lately there's been one at the market wearing a wolf mask and playing violin. My ds loves to grab a snow cone from one of the vendors and watch the violin monster. If you do that, zimmermans and the hands on museum are well within walking distance.
