  1. First Christian homeschool convention I ever went to I was surprised to see a group of about a dozen Muslims together (several couples). :) My brother and his wife hs as well and were there with us and he of course had to talk to them, wanted to make sure somebody said hello and made them feel welcome. :) We ended up chatting for a while about why we homeschool and they told us they felt the options for curriculum at the Christian convention were more in line with their values and morals. It was neat! :) I hope you enjoy it if you choose to go. :)

  2. I've seen a big shift in this since my oldest was born 12 years ago. All of a sudden the working moms didn't send their tots to "daycare", it was "school". I've seen a lot of moms on fb post "first day of school" pics of their 2 year olds- complete with backpacks. I'm in Canada and we have full day kindergarten here in ontario, intake age is 3. Makes me sad. I'm convinced that the best education for a 3-5 year old is lots and lots of free play, preferably outside in the garden and the dirt, lots of time reading books and coloring, painting, and baking with mom. It's such a precious exciting age I wouldn't hand it off to anyone else for anything. :) All of my kids have learned to read at home on my knee at the same age as their full day K peers, and countless other things as well.

  3. I taught myself to can by going to pickyourown.org and following step by step picture tutorials! :) they have a ton of recipes. I usually make jams, canned peaches, pears, applesauce, salsa, tomato sauce, grape juice. I also freeze pumpkin, zucchini, and corn. We grow all of it in our garden but the grapes we get from family, and the corn is from my neighbour (a farmer).

  4. Symptoms of Anaphylaxis
•Skin system: hives, swelling, itching, warmth, redness, rash
•Respiratory system (breathing): coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, chest pain/tightness, throat tightness, hoarse voice, nasal congestion or hay fever-like symptoms (runny itchy nose and watery eyes, sneezing), trouble swallowing
•Gastrointestinal system (stomach): nausea, pain/cramps, vomiting, diarrhea
•Cardiovascular system (heart): pale/blue colour, weak pulse, passing out, dizzy/lightheaded, shock
•Other: anxiety, feeling of "impending doom", headache, uterine cramps, metallic taste

The most dangerous symptoms of an allergic reaction are:
•Trouble breathing caused by swelling of the airways (including a severe asthma attack for people who have asthma)
•A drop in blood pressure causing dizziness, light-headedness, feeling faint or weak, or passing out.
Both can lead to death if untreated.

    Taken from anaphylaxis.ca

My ds had extreme sleepiness when he had anaphylaxis as a toddler to egg. His first sign was turning grey with a look of dread no one could miss it was so awful, as if he'd just seen something horrific. He then had the more recognizable symptoms of hives and vomiting, but he was so suddenly tired he was limp and sleepy in between vomiting, though he didn't have shortness of breath. He slept a lot after the episode as well. But I would also look into heart issues to be safe.

  5. I have endometriosis and PCOS. I had a lap to remove endo from my ovaries among other places. I had not ovulated in at least 6 months prior to surgery. We were ttc for a long time at that point so we wanted to get things back on track ASAP. After my lap I had one period, then the next period I had didn't stop. My gyn who did the surgery moved to Sudan (not kidding!) so I had to find a new ob. The next dr just told me to takevthevpill and come back in a year. Nice. I figured my bleeding issue was from annovulation for so long I had unopposed estrogen with no progesterone to balance it out. The gyn didn't listen, just threw BCP at anything as a bandaid solution. I bled for nearly 6 months on OB waiting list. I finally went back to my family doc and told him my theory about trying progesterone to balance out the estrogen running rampant. He agreed to give me Provera to try to stop the bleeding and hopefully kick start a normal cycle. The bleeding stopped while on provera, then a few days later I had a normal period and a regular ovulatory cycle! I then started on Clomid with an RE and was able to keep my cycles stable while ttc and finally got pregnant through treatments (IUI etc). When it became an issue again a couple years ago I started on metformin for my PCOS and it keeps my cycles regular so that I don't go too long without ovulating and thus have no progesterone.

  6. Lasagna
    Manicotti
    Homemade pizza
    Stuffed shells

(My step mom is Italian!) I serve the above with bread sticks and Cesar salad.

Roast a chicken with veggies, mashed potatoes, roasted asparagus.

Crusted chicken breasts with either rice or potatoes and green bean casserole or some other vegetable.

Chicken parmigiana with fettuccine Alfredo and roasted asparagus/Cesar salad.

Homemade meatballs with sauce and either rice or mashed potatoes and veggies.

Dessert is usually homemade cake, cupcakes, or pie. :)

  7. Ours is $15 to join the Christian homeschool group, then you pay per activity. We have a spring and fall session of 4 weeks co-op classes divided by age taught by parents- only 4 Fridays per session- so 8 per year. It's $15 per family for the co-op (we have it at a baptist church with a gym and classrooms as the pastor and his wife homeschool). Obviously field trips are extra. We also pay $65 a year to be part of the weekly skating rink rental for 6 months for our group- well worth it, it's our favorite part of hs group.

I know of one particular hs group in a large city that cost over $100 per family and each family must have a HSLDA membership as well. :-|

  8. My ds is not behind, but he is easily distractable and irritated, plus he gets overwhelmed/bored easily by certain subjects. R&S and CLE language arts bored him to tears, he hated them (though I thought they were a good thorough program and was sorry to give up CLE). We backed off of LA for a while, let him read a LOT for pleasure, read great classic lit to him, etc. He is nearly 12 and doing "Climbing to Good English" for now without complaint. For math he really likes Life of Fred- see if you ds likes it, maybe try reading it to him, if necessary. :) Hope you find something that works for him.

  9. Hoping you find him. :( Our dog took off a few months ago and didn't come home, he was gone all night and I feared the worst. I called the shelter and they suggested I go to facebook, our city has a fb page called Lost Pets of _____, photos of missing animals are posted as well as sightings. I posted my dog's photo on the fb page and in a couple hours I had 2 emails of people saying they had sighted our dog, at a farm across the road from them! We drove out to the area, a couple miles from our house. We found him- in a barn cozied up with a female dog!! (We had meant to get him fixed but hadn't gotten around to it, he's 1.5 yrs.). He'd been missing 2.5 days and I was certain we'd find him in a ditch. He's been home safe and happy since and today we went to visit the puppies he fathered- German shepherd/husky mother and a golden doodle father= very cute interesting mutts. ;) But he won't be fathering anymore pups and hopefully won't be running off anymore.

I get all the postings of that fb page every day so I can keep an eye out for others' missing pets, it's an awesome idea and has reunited hundreds of pets and families!

  10. Before I had kids I would say I'd never leave my boys uncircumcised- thought it was gross. Both my boys are intact after someone convinced me to watch a circ video. ;)

I said I'd never spoil my kids like some people who never let their babies cry to sleep. I ended up never using CIO and even co-slept and slinged my babies! ;)

I said we'd never have pets because of allergies. Last summer at one point we had 40 chickens, 2 ducks, 5 turkeys, 4 rabbits, 2 cats and a dog!!!

I will say that we'll never have that many animals at once again- it was exhausting! We're down to a dog and a few barn cats. We'll get a few more freezer and egg chickens this spring, maybe a few turkeys... But that's it! ;)

  11. I remember that feeling too! :) Signs all over town reminding parents to sign their kids up for kindergarden- and I was opting out of the norm- it made it more real! When all the kiddies went off to school in the fall and my boy stayed home with me and we went to the park and read books under a colorful maple tree- it was official! We were homeschoolers! So let me officially "welcome" you to the club! :D I'm so happy we made this choice, everyone around here sends off their 4 year olds to all day kindergarden, I don't mind being different if it means I get to spend each day with my wonderful little people!

  12. It's easier to get into Canada usually. We recently traveled to the states, our children had their original birth certificates, no passports. I brought dd shopping across the border last month w/o dh and didn't bring a letter of consent from him, didn't have a chance to get one so I took a chance since we're only an hour from the border, it wouldn't be a huge deal if they turned me away. We got through no problem. Dh took ds (11) across the border yesterday for a trip to West Virginia, I sent along ds' birth certificate and a photocopy of my passport and driver's license along with a brief letter of consent for the trip with my signature and dated. They had no issues. You don't need passports for minors under 16 between Canada and the US unless flying.

  13. Most of the homeschooled kids I know who are grown up and married/engaged met their spouse through church- youth group activities where young people from other cities within our denomination meet up, or through church conferences, or Christian college. My brother met his homeschooled wife at Pensacola Christian College, they now homeschool their 5 kids. :)

  14. What is "deferred status"? Does this mean that they're not taking up any legit "refugee" slots?

Regardless, I am happy for them, it must be such a relief. I would be heartbroken if my kids were forced into school, we feel very strongly about it for so many reasons, especially my youngest who has extremely severe food allergies, I'd be practically frantic with worry for him in school.

  15. I'm curious, is the option to move to another country in the EU still an option? I think a judge in Germany took their passports. I don't understand why they wouldn't have done this in the first place- avoided all this circus, the heartache, the police coming in their home and forcing their children to school?! Surely they must have known...? Also if they wanted to move to the US so badly, if he were offered a job by an American company, couldn't he just apply for a work visa and move his family here? Wouldn't that have been much easier? Judging by all the hoopla on HSLDA generated by this story (I get their newsfeed on facebook) hundreds/thousands of people were rooting for this family- surely one of them would have gladly offered him a job in order to get his family safely in the US? (Not American so I could be totally off, please inform me.)

  16. One of my closest friends has 6 kids who now range from 10-25. Her oldest is married, 2nd is graduated, 3rd is graduating college and engaged, and 4th is going to college in the fall. Her younger 2 are 14 and 10 and still homeschooling. My oldest is nearly 12 and my dd is nearly 10, youngest is 5. My dd and her youngest are best friends, inseparable, always back and forth. :) I'm so so thankful for her influence on me over the years and that she befriended me when I had no friends- moving away from home to here when I got married. We swap homeschool talk, marriage, everything. She is so dear to me and despite the difference in where we are in life we are really close. :) it's funny, because we are now to her oldest married son and his wife that she was to me when I came here. Her son and his wife are at our house all the time, they'll be starting a family soon, my dh was one of his groomsmen in their wedding. :) I hope I can be as much an encourager to her as her mil has been to me over the years. I know my older friend is also thankful for my friendship to her, we just get each other, and I'm so glad she didn't let our ages and stages dictate that we would unlikely be friends.

You should try homeschool group again, there are a lot of ladies in our group who have some in college or married and their youngest is still preschool or son. I hope you find someone, life sounds very busy! :)

  17. I've known for a few years (confirmed by 3 dentists) that my dd will need braces around 12-13 because she has a very thick muscle (frenulum) that goes between her front teeth and forces them apart by a fair bit, which will likely also cause crowding issues once all her teeth are in. She'll need surgery to cut part of the muscle out before the braces are put on.

My eldest son just started at a new dentist last week and he said to me in passing he's like to set up an ortho appointment for him as he has bite issues and needs braces??!!!?? 2 past dentists have never mentioned this, but I will be seeking the opinion of our old dentist (we left because his office is 4 hrs away in my hometown, which was just too far to keep driving!).

I think braces are so popular these days, so many seem to get them for minor cosmetic reasons. We don't have medical benefits, if both kids get them that's about $16,000-20,000! That's a down payment on a freakin house!!!! I do think braces for severe or bad cosmetic issues are fine, I would for my children if at all possible, but I'm hearing of dentists recommending braces for kids and adults with. Very minor issues that are perfectly comfortable with their smile. I do know a girl whose parents refused to get her braces for very crooked teeth because it was technically cosmetic, as a result she never smiles with her lips parted, even as an adult, and it's affected how people perceive her, because she comes off as being either snobby or shy- she's neither. :(
