That is a great idea, I think I will be doing that because it really is such a great program. Thanks!

We use A Reason for Handwriting and Draw Write Now, the kids love the latter because they draw animals and practice writing!

Ladies,
Currently my 10.5 yo son and 8.5 yo daughter are doing Horizons 5 and Math Mammoth 5. This combination is working well in terms of depth, challenge, and retention. I even often find that they're able to discover how to do new things themselves without me showing the algorithm/shortcut. So I've been pleased with this.
I am thinking about doing this too! Do you feel the levels line up fairly well? My son did Horizons K last year and this year I am thinking MM 1A/1B with Horizons 1.

This last year, my son went through Horizons K Phonics and Reading. I was very impressed with the result. He is an excellent reader and can sound out very long words and can spell at a 2nd grade level already. The big flaw: soooo much writing! Everytime he had a lesson with 3 or 4 pages he would not want to do it because of the writing. So, my question is: is there another great phonics program similiar to Horizons but without all the writing?

I switched my dd from Horizons to Singapore, then back to Horizons  I liked the idea behind Singapore, but she got frustrated and bored with doing the same things over and over before moving to a new topic. I wouldn't change what's working...
This is what I am worried about-he doesn't tolerate reviewing things over and over when he already knows it.

That is one of the things that I like about Singapore-seeing the 10 when adding. It makes so much sense. Thank you all for your help. I think I may try some sort of combo.

I think you can begin Shurley at 1st or 2nd grade.

Last year I had my son do Horizons math for Kindergarten. He flew threw it. For first grade I am wondering if I should continue with Horizons or switch to Singapore. I like the way Singapore uses number bonds and I also think their teacher's manual does a better job of helping me explain concepts. For those of you who have tried both, which do you like better and why? Thanks for your help!

My son will be in first grade this coming fall. I have most everything figured out, except for spelling and a grammar/writing curriculum. If anyone has used something for any of these that you loved let me know what it is and why it was so great. Last year we used Horizons which I thought was good, but he thought was way to much writing and repetitive. Thanks!

Just wondering what subjects everyone is teaching for 1st grade. It is time for me to start ordering for next year and I want to make sure I have my bases covered. Also, what curriculum are you using? Thanks! :001_smile:

This year I used Horizons Math and LA for K. My son flew through Horizons Math and LA, but he felt like it was too repetitive. Whenever people ask him what he learned today he says, "Nothing! I already know everything, it is the same every day." So, my question is: is there something out there that is more challenging for 1st I should try or should I stick with Horizons.

Thank you so much! All of those sound great! Thank you for helping me choose and confirm the ones I should get. I know there is no way I will be able to read all of the ones on every list, so it is necessary that I figure out what ones are really worth buying and looking for at the library. I could fill up my days looking for every book (as well as reading this forum). I must limit myself somehow. :001_smile:

I have been pouring over all of the book lists from Ambleside, Sonlight etc...and I want to buy/check out all of them! (K/1st levels) Please help me narrow it down some....tell me your absolute favorites. :001_smile:

Thread title says it. :001_smile:

Thank you so much for your great ideas! Okay, I give up...I am going to have to get AAR. :001_smile:

Great ideas! I looked at the "Letter of the Week" on Confessions of a Homeschooler...so creative! I will definately be using that!
I really want to get All About Reading too. Those of you using it: How do you feel about the cost/benefit ratio. It is just so expensive compared to a book like 100 EZ Lessons.
I also love the ideas listed such as putting on music or audio books! Thank you!
Ordering BFIAR right now...

Great ideas! Love them...keep them coming! :)

Please help me come up with some good age appropriate learning ideas for a 3/4 yr old to do while I am teaching my other child as well. Thank you.

I am wanting to get the Singapore Earlybird Activity books as extra/different practice for my son in Math, but not use the other Earlybird texts or TM (I will be using a different curriculum). Can the activity books be used without the text and TM from Singapore or are those necessary to know what the instructions are for the Activity books? Thank you for your help. :001_smile:

Thank you for your reccomendations. I will look into them. I have looked a little at the Miquon. Originally I was going to use Horizons or Saxon...then came to CLE and loved the TM for it so I was looking to use that. Based off of your posts I am going to order RightStart and see if it works for us! Hope it does!

Thank you for your replies and suggestions. Currently for Pre-K we are doing the Rod & Staff pre-k books and 100 Ez lessons. I am so excited about next year! :)
Ok, I am sold on Shurley...

I was debating if I should buy Shurley English, so I went and found the noun jingle, sang it to my 6 and 4 year old (once!) and a week later my dd (4) is singing it for fun! Sold.
