  4. I'm thinking about using saxon grammar & writing for my upcoming 6th grader who will be joining our Murrayshire Academy homeschool in August from PS....Her PS teacher looked over the curriculum with me too and gave her opinion that it would be a great fit for my dd....with that said, has anyone used this saxon program and does it work?? I like the somewhat independence of it b/c my dd is very independent...I like the amount of review and tests.... Can I get some homeschooler mom & dad opinions?? Thank you, Jana
  5. Are you saying that I should wait until August when we start our next round of schooling? Did you say you used SL K LA? Thank you for your help! Jana
  6. Thank you ladies for your advice.....!!! Smiles, Jana
  7. Hello to you all!! I started using the "Teach your child to read in 100 Easy Lessons" with my 5 year old a few weeks ago....he is doing very well with it by the way and awesome with his sound writing, too! I wasn't going to start with our K curriculum until August.....I was going to use either K in WP or K in SL.....I noticed that in the K programs they use the Explode the Code Ready, set, go series.....My question is: Should I go ahead and start those with my ds now with the 100 Easy lessons to read or should I wait......?? I have a feeling that if I wait, he may be too far into reading simple 3 letter words that the early explode the code books would be pointless to use?? Not sure at this point....some advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, j.m.:001_smile:
  8. Thanks to all of you for taking the time to chat with me! Enjoy the rest of your Sunday afternoon!! Sunny and warm here in NC....getting back outside!!!:001_smile: Jana
  9. Thank you again for the reply....I'm happy to hear that each only take b/w 15-25 minutes......Thank you! Jana
  10. Thank you for the information.....I need to ask though, how long does it take of your individual time to instruct WWE and FLL?? I'll be trying to cut my time into thirds with my three kids....I know saxon math for my k'er and saxon math for my 3rd gr. dd will take up some time. I'm trying to figure out how to split up my time?? Thank you for sharing, Jana
  11. Hello Everyone!! Next fall, I'm planning on using SL Core 1+2 (B+C) with my third grader....I'm not going to use their LA portion of the core. Sooooo....I need help figuring out grammar, WRITING, and literature and ALL that good stuff she needs to know. First of all, I will have a 6th grader in the fall (who will mainly work independently with help if needed), and a K'er....(he will of course need my attention more)....I'm looking for my third grader to become a little more independent in learning but still have that instruction for me. I will be using Saxon Math 3 for her and that is more teacher involved. So this is what I've been thinking for my 3rd grader so please let me know your opinions and how I should pair certain subjects together. History: SL core 1+2, possibly throwing in some SOTW too Science: SL 2 Literature: thinking about just using SL Advan. 2 readers with study guide and schedule and throw in library books and books from OUR library. Phonics: MCP C? Never have used these books so don't know anything about them really...I just know SL offers it for 3rd grade. Math: Saxon 3 Spelling: I have Spelling Power and I may use that for her as well....and use Wordly Wise b/c she likes it and she loves doing lesson one of each section using the computer!! It makes her feel more independent! She'll highlight each new word as the computer reads it. Grammar & Writing: This is where I really need HELP!! She is not a super strong writer(but can write a full paragraph but dreads it) and is lacking knowledge on some different kinds of writing (letters, etc) and structure....(She is my little story teller though:)) I would love a writing and grammar combo! Some options I was thinking about: Writing Tales 1 along with FLL 3?? Will this be too much involvement from me?? Writing With Ease and FLL 3? Writing Strands and R&S English? Shurley English 3 (homeschool version): I love the idea about jingles....I think dd would like it. How long is a lesson for this takes involvement from me?? And, is this a little more advanced to where I would have to start at 2nd gr. level? This does include the writing and grammar combo!:) It does have journal writing which I love! TIME is the questionable issue though. **Am I leaving anything out.....I am trying to not have to purchase a TON of different things...due to the amount of money and scheduling....Trying to keep it simple, intriguing, fun, but well rounded! Any help would be sooooo greatly appreciated!! If anyone has a suggestion on planners....please pass it on to me....I would need a multiple child planner where I can see everyones schedule all at once and not flipping back & forth!! Thanks a bunch for lending me your ear, :001_smile: Jana
  12. I'm going to use Sonlight Core 5 with my 6th grader in the fall......I'm trying to decide whether to use SL LA 5 or just use something different for spelling, grammar, & writing. Has anyone used Grammar Ace with success? Shurley English 6? Winston Grammer Basic? She is in public school right now and says she is not learning any grammar and lacking writing. So, with that being said, I'm not sure about where she is with her grammar skills. Should I just try something basic.....I don't want her to be behind....She is strong with her writing and spelling(she won the spelling bee in her school this year and then went on to placing top 5 in the district Bee!!). But she has expressed to me that they have not been doing any grammar this year. They focus mainly on math and science. Any help would be great! Thank you, Jana Murray:001_smile:
  13. Need some help deciding on spelling, grammar, and writing programs..... DD11(6th grade): thinking about Spelling Power, Spelling By sound and structure, or Sequential spelling, or AAS? She is a strong speller coming from public school to homeschool in the fall.....Grammar: thinking about R&S english, All-in-one English, Analytical Grammar?, Grammer Ace, Shurley English.....we are going to be studying SL core 5 next fall......any advice? Writing: Writing Strands....dd11 is pretty strong in all areas....I don't want her to be bored but very well challenged! Another, maybe Writing With Ease? Would like programs that allow her to work more independent and just have me there for guidance if needed and to read her work over. DD8(3rd grade): She needs more help in spelling structure...She may be okay by fall...but I'm not sure where to start her in this area? Writing: writing strands or wwe....right now she is working through the book "Just Write"......she likes it. She is also writing paragraphs on what she has read or listening to me read. Grammar: MCP plaid?, Primary lang. lessons, shurley english......growing with grammer.....(She will be studying core 1+2 in SL) DS5(grade K in fall): We are getting ready to start 100 Easy Lessons to Reading.....In the fall, would Explode the Code be enough for his phonics/spelling skills? Of course lots of reading, HWWT, and Saxon Math. This is a mouthfull but any advice or opinions would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you, Jana :)
