  1. When I do this, I sometimes clear out a drawer in the fridge to be the holding place for my day's "rations." For breakfast I get up and have my slice of toast with either one olive-oil fried egg or peanut butter atop, 1 cup skim milk and coffee, and plan out my food for the rest of the day. Into the drawer it goes. Be sure it is a balance of carbs, proteins, dairy, fruit and veggies. The trick is to spread out the eating of it in small increments throughout the day.

Additional items not in the drawer include unlimited amounts of green salad and celery (watch out for the salad dressing, I go plain or no-fat at appx 10 to cal per serving), unsweetened iced tea, sometimes a diet soda if I feel uncomfortably empty. And lots of water. I try to measure it and (except when I was pregnant) try not to drink too much more than the recommended 64 oz per day, otherwise I will feel too full to eat and the calorie count drop will stall my metabolism.

Thanks for reminding me of this old method, I need to do it now and I forgot how well it worked for me! Hope you find it helpful.

This poster is my DIET TWIN. I like to eat the same couple of things every day for breakfast lunch and a snack when I am trying to drop a few pounds. This is what it would look like for me:

Breakfast: protein shake, pb toast or egg on toast.

Lunch: tuna salad with tons of veggies and some olives

Late afternoon snack is a MUST: protein shake, yogurt and fruit, cottage cheese and fruit, peanut butter bread or hummus with carrots or pita, some olives or nuts.

Dinner: reasonable amount of whatever the family is having. maybe a few bites of dessert

Plus tons and tons of water, ice tea or water with a splash of unsweetened cranberry juice throughout the day.

I used to be able to have a glass of wine and some cheese or something in the evenings and maybe a few other treats in there and still stay really thin, but now in order to really lose weight, I have to follow this :tongue_smilie:. I think it is age and hormones. That said, I feel so much better when I eat like this.

  2. You'll want to talk to the activities director. If you are going to be singing (unless it is a caroling kind of thing from room to room) then the residents will need to be in their dining/activity hall. It will have to be scheduled at a time that nothing else is scheduled - including baths, etc.

oh yes, i plan to talk to the activities director and have an assigned time once a month in the actvity area. our small group does a similar thing.

  3. I am trying to organize a nursing home ministry for homeschool kids. We would visit once or twice a month and give cheer to the elderly.

Does anyone have any experience with this? I think I might have 10-12 kids ages 2-10. I know I want to include a singing time. When our small group has done this, the people in the nursing just love the singing.

What else could we do? Thanks so much, Laura

  4. I have dd illustrate her narrations once or twice a week. I am having trouble getting her to do her best work on this. Also her best work is what I think a 3 or 4 yo might draw.

Although this is probably mostly her laid back personality, I think it might also be that she doesn't see the kind of drawing and coloring a typical first grader might do because she isn't in a classroom setting.

Has anyone else dealt with this? And isn't there a website out there to see typical drawing and coloring for different ages? thanks for any insight you can give.

  5. I agree with everything that was said.

One thing that we did, though, to speed things up is go through OUR insurance. They went to the other guy's insurer for reimbursement. That sped things up on my end!

Also, since this guy was clearly in the wrong, you can (or your insurance company) can arrange for a rental car from the other insurer.

yes, our insurance company is on the case already. we are seeing about a rental.

  6. We did half MUS and half Abeka this year and never spent more than 20 minutes a day. Those time guidelines in WTM can be disconcerting. It doesn't bother me that we don't meet them for math, because I know we are getting through the curriculum. But we spend 15 minutes on science sometimes and it suggests an hour for that too I think, and that it harder to gauge whether you are covering enough.

  7. I am so confused about history. I was so sure about everything else and now history just has me stumped!

My dd will be in 1st and I am torn about what to do. SOTW and Truthquest have popped out at me. But I wanted opinions from people who have used one, both or even something else.

DD loves to read, but she is senstitive to certain topics. So, while I don't want to shelter her, I would like to leave out the harsher parts of history until she's a bit older. She loves the ancients (went to see the King Tut exhibit this year and has been talking about it since) but is extremely interested in US history (thanks to her American Girl doll).

Any reccomendations will do I just need some input!

Thanks for any and all help!

We are finishing up SOTW ancients. It is so very very good. I can't believe how it helps DD (6) understand human nature in addition to the time line of history. It did feel weird to be reading about some sort of gory ideas at first, but she accepted it very matter of factly. We are Christians and talked about the evil in the world being a result of sin.

I was torn about the American history issue to, knowing she would love it, but I decide that doing things chronologically was more important and I am so glad I did.

  8. Does anyone have any experience with this? Thank goodness everyone is ok after a bad accident. (the other guy ran a red light)

However, we really don't want to have to buy a new van right now! I think the other person's insurance will give us blue book value for the car. Is that right? I don't think it is necessarily enough to buy a new one and we just put $600 dollars into this one!

  9. You are smart to start shopping now. Take your time and try a bunch of stuff on. For the evening party, I would say a nice knee length dress with spanx and you will be good to go! I would try Ann Taylor or Ann Taylor loft. A lot of stuff is getting marked down. I have a wedding in August and I need to get something before all the summer dresses are gone!

  10. She has been spotted a few times. My family and my neighbors have seen her on our fence and in a few trees around us. She seems happy at least.

our bird escaped when i was a kid. the nieghbors and my dad tracked him with his cage and coaxed him back in. they don't go very far, i don't think. also, they are prey for other birds, so maybe go try to coax him back home soon! i hope you can get him back!

  11. It is obviously important to them. So try to do it. Especially since you are the in-law. If it were your parents, you could probably ask them to skip it. Maybe ask to not bring something to the potluck or just buy something to take, so that you'll have more time to prepare.

I second the buying something for the potluck! And don't get dolled up. I can't imagine that the picture is very close up with all those people. I think what really bothers you is the idea that they do this when it is ridiculous! I understand that completely. But try to take the pressure off yourself, smile and go with the flow.

  12. Did the chicken work out for you?

Flank steak is a favorite here and grills beautifully. This would be a lovely Father's Day meal, but is a bit of work (you may need 2, depending on how much your girls eat).

    Pinwheel Flank Steak

    Mango Salsa

Yes and No on the chicken. It was really really good. It fell off the bone and everyone loved it. But it looked awful. Like road kill. I did end up cooking it covered and then browning it up a little. I wouldn't serve it to company, but it was delicious. Must tweek it next time!

  13. Just got my MUS Alpha in the mail. I am really excited. BUT I am reading it and watching the DVD and I realize, they don't have anything like measurements, clocks or money. Do I need to supplement all that. What do people typically do?

  14. I invited the ILs over for Father's Day. I want to grill out and make something really yummy. I would also like to use fresh strawberries for dessert. Anyone have any lovely menu ideas. I don't mind going to some effort and expense, if I can do it ahead of time and not be slaving in the kitchen at the last minute. Thanks for any tips you can give me.

  15. I only have one year under my belt, and I only have two little ones. But we school 5 days a week, year round, taking days off when we want to for play dates, museum trips, company and illness.

After breakfast we do an hour or two and after lunch another hour (mostly reading). I only have K and preschoolers though.

I like the idea that any day we are home (except Saturday when DH is home), we do this school schedule. Then we don't ever have to start up and stop or have issues with whether this is a school day or not. They expect it, and it keeps me from getting lazy.

  16. She used to hang out on the board, years ago when it was much smaller. She used to answer everyone's questions personally. It got to be too much, though, so Janie and some of the other old-timers convinced her that they could handle the simple stuff, and save just the hard questions for Susan. Eventually, though, the board got too big, and her writing responsibilities got more complicated, and she had her fourth child, and she got full time moderators, and let us all loose. :) It was hard for her though. She liked it here! :)

I wish she would have a question and answer day once a month or so! I too, am in awe of her.

  17. I don't know about the falling off the bone, but I always cook mine with Nigella Lawson's directions from "How to Eat" (love that book!) with some changes from Barefoot Contessa & Cooks Illustrated for good measure [grin]

Preheat oven to 425. Stick 1/2 a lemon in the chicken cavity. Cover with olive oil, salt, pepper. Put on shallow roasting pan (a high sided pan will steam the chicken rather than roast it), thighs up. Put in oven, half-way through turn over so breast side is up. Bake 15 minutes per pound plus 10 minutes. (e.g. 5 pd chicken would cook 1 hr 25 min)

This is soooo good, my kids *love* baked chicken.

oh thank you so much! are you sure i don't need to cook it covered for awhile? would that steam it too though? thank you

  18. I got a lot out of those books as well. I take some of the supplements and eat a lot of protein. It really helps my mood and my waistline.

Everyone is different, but I don't like to go cold turkey. I would eliminate sugar from one meal at a time or just switch out a few of the foods. If I want something sweet after lunch, I try to drink a glass of water instead. And If I want something sweet at 3 or 4, I drink a protein shake or cottage cheese with fruit. Finding things you like and changes you can make without going too extreme may be a better option.

  19. We're starting SOTW in the fall too. One dd will be 6, the other will be 4. I was going to take 2 years to do ancients, taking it nice & easy, as this will be dd5's K year, but now I'm not sure. Several of you starting SOTW have dc that will be 6 in the fall, as my dd will be. Does it make a big difference if it's K or 1st when we start, if we just do it for 1 year, if she's going to be 6 soon? Will the academic progress she's made or hasn't made make a difference? If we only take one year for SOTW1, then we'll be done with the first cycle at the end of 3rd grade instead of 4th.

we did SOTW 1 last year for kindy because i couldn't wait and i wasn't sure i would be homeschooling all the way through so i wanted to get through as much as i could. dd did fine starting at almost 5 and a half years old (dec birthday). looking back at her work at the beginning of the year, she has come so far in her ability, but i don't think we lost much starting early. and she loves history, that is the goal right?
