  1. Thanks, these are all good ideas. I think my main frustration is that last year the girls played so well together. I was in heaven! Now this year they struggle more. So DD2 is bored during lessons, rest time AND play time.

Without too much detail, our schedule is Bible together first thing, then math, then I work with DD1 for an hour or two while DD2 plays (lays around fussing). Then we go for a walk or bike ride or errand. Then lunch, reading time, rest time and free time until dinner.

I also incorporate her into chores and bake with her when I can, but it just doesn't seem like much of a life for a 5 year old. I am even thinking of sending her to school next year and that is a far cry from where I was last year.

  2. I am starting to do more and more academics with my older daughter. This means my almost kindergartener is bored a lot. She is done very quickly with leggos and coloring and lacing cards and puzzles. Even if she spends an hour with those, there are still about 3 hours to fill for her while I work with DD#1. She just lies around looking bored and I feel terrible. Then when I am doing my chores and DD1 is playing dolls or coloring and playing great by herself, DD2 is STILL bored. I am feeling really guilty about this. Has anyone been through this..ideas please?

  3. You would think I would have done this in the seven years I have been a mom, but this is our first year to dye eggs at home.

I am getting ready to boil the eggs, any tips? I have made 2-4 hard boiled eggs before just to eat. I let them cook for 15 minutes. I was going to do 20 eggs, in 2 batches of 10. Should I still cook them for 15 minutes?

Any advice for boiling and dyeing would be appreicated. Thanks!

PS: I have the regular PAZ dye kit.

  4. I am looking more for poems and Bible verses, not just facts. I forgot we also did memorize the Veritas Press timeline flashcards. That is all we need for that kind of thing.

I found this poem I thought might be good for this time of year.

and I memorized this sonnet in HS...I might give it a try too.

    any more?

  5. we loosely follow WTM. I also like CM. Does anyone have a couple good recs for something to memorize for dd age 7. I have been too lax with that this year. Last year we did the 23rd Psalm, The Lord's Prayer and a couple short poems in addition to the books of the Bible, and the months of the year. We are doing SOTW II, The Middle Ages. Bonus points if it could coincide with that.

  6. dd #1 threw up for 12 hours or so the other day. to where it was just dry heaving and bile. it was over and over again every 15 minutes. she is better now, but dd #2 just started up with it. is there anything i can give her to help her stop? why does she keep vomiting when her stomach is so empty?

also, does anyone else have this bug?

  7. Just the student book. There is no need for the TM. It just has the answers and really, you will know if the child is right or not very easily. The monkey cards didn't exist when we did SSL. They look fun but aren't actually nessesary.

Cadam, Thank you for responding. If you see this, can you tell me what you did after this for Latin? thank you very much

  8. this is so dumb, but please help me. I am cleaning out dd's closet (age 7) and I have a huge stack of blankets that people knit her when she was born. I will keep the one from dh's grandmother, but can I pitch the rest? They have been taking up too much of her closet for too long. I feel so bad after people went to that effort. We have never used them at all and she doesn't use them for her baby dolls either. TIA

  9. Just writing back to say I ordered them all and I like them a lot. Of course it would be better to have lavish color illustrations, but I am sure $$ was a consideration. I think the writing is quite good, dd loves them and it has been really great to have some biographies right at the elementary level to back up what we are reading. PHP should commission some more!

  10. These books are the product of a writing contest held by Peace Hill Press a few years ago. Anyone could submit a manuscript for a children's book about famous individuals for which grammar stage literature was scarce. These are the 3 that were chosen to be published by Peace Hill Press.

I haven't read them myself but I would be surprised if they were less than impressive. ;) You can also buy them directly from Peace Hill Press.

I had NO IDEA. oh my goodness. that is cool. still have to think about the $$ though.

  11. If it is the best school in the state, then it may have something to do with the parents. Many times good schools=involved and conscientious parents. Not that the teacher isn't great, but it could also be good home environments too where parents are reading and talking to their kids. Also, just in asking around to my friends who do public, private and home school, it seems like about half their kids just pick up reading pretty easily. Some of them said their child just brought them a book and read it to them one day. The other half needs more hand holding. It took my daughter about 9 months in OPG and she is doing great now..but it wasn't overnight.

  12. Has anyone bought or read this series? It has Ethelred, Gutenberg and Empress THeodora. It looks so good but they are a little pricey and my library doesn't have them. Are they worth it to have in your library? I only buy maybe 8-10 of the books that go with history each year. Our library usually has everything.

  13. we are just starting Castles and Knights in SOTW II and I am looking for ideas to make this special. Any ideas for building a castle..from a kit or otherwise? What were your favorite books or stories from this era? Activities? Thanks, Laura
