  1. Mastering the Art of French Cooking by Julia Child - I am not a good cook but this taught me so many practical things about cooking. And the Boeuf Bourguignon is really about the best thing I have ever tasted!

Essentials of Classical Italian Cooking by Marcella Hazan - My favorites are the Tomoto and Onion Sauce, Cream and Butter Sauce, Butter and Sage, Pesto, and Bolognese Meat Sauce.

    Now I'm getting hungry!! :)

  2. Inappropriate? Yes. Common? Unfortunately yes. A dear friend of mine, who had been leading and involved with youth for more than 15 years at the same church, was forced to answer this question when they installed new policies about children's volunteers. She was afraid they would make her step down if she answered truthfully. I hate the way that question made her feel - as if she had done something wrong! Everything worked out fine and she is still at the same church but I don't like how it made her feel.

Of course, most churches are actually a business so they are just trying to protect the business. And yes, I do believe it is more about protecting the business than the children. I will step off my soapbox now. :)

  3. I was all ready to place my order with Rainbow Resource and realized I have the older WTM version. I checked it out from our homeschool library. Anyway, I was wondering if the experiment book and resource book recommendations are different in the new edition for the Earth/Space and Chemistry? Below is what I plan to order:

Adventures w/ Atoms & Molecules Bk 1:Chem Exp

    First Encyclopedia of Our World

    First Encyclopedia of Science

    First Encyclopedia of Space

    Usborne Science Encyclopedia

    More Mudpies to Magnets

I know that other science curriculums have been recommended and I am planning on using HOD and their science but I want to be able to add some of this. Plus, even though it is alot of work, it just looks fun!

  4. Been to DC for a couple of months the last two summers and we always brought our lunch. Carried in a backpack. They security checked my bag when I entered the museums and never said anything to me. One of my favorite memories is a picnic on the National Mall. :) Just an FYI, don't accidently bring a knife to cut your apple into the Air & Space Museum. It can be pretty embarassing. Though the Smithsonian Castle let me bring it in. :001_huh:

  5. I have wondered about this as well, especially for my oldest with whom language comes naturally. My husband is a natural born writer and even writes for a living. He says he thinks grammar is unnecessary. He believes if one is exposed to great literature and lots of reading then he/she will know how to write well. Because writing is such a struggle for me, it is hard for me to go along with him. I don't want my girls to struggle like I have. I will reread and have to think a long time before putting something in an email or thread post (like here :)). Though I do understand grammar and remember grammar from school I am a weak writer. Maybe it depends on the child.

I am glad to see others waited until the children were older and were fine.

  6. I have read these types of threads for years and don't see how Saxon doesn't teach the concept behind the skill...each skill learned is explained, then in later lessons more is added to them, then the skills are done in word problems in the problem sets.

    :iagree:

I chose Saxon because I believe it is a solid program. I am always researching and studying other curriculum whether it be history, LA, science, spelling, etc. I have even looked at other math programs. Yes, it takes too long. Yes, there are no colorful pictures. Yes, I have never even considered supplementing. And yes, I know people have a love/hate relationship with it. Honestly, I get tired with the lessons and worksheets taking so long. I wanted to switch because of the time it takes for me. But I keep going back to Saxon. For my family, I believe it is going to give my children the solid foundation needed for math.

I tried out TT3 samples online with my oldest, who is in 2nd, for about two weeks. She could do the problems and had fun but said she would rather do Saxon because she got to spend more time with me. Since then I have asked her several times if she would like to try out another program because, yes, after a full lesson she gets tired. She is more my language girl than a math girl. But she is the one that said she would rather do Saxon because the lessons are fun.
