  1. Our American Heritage Girls troop does a Veteran's Day service project. They make thank you cards for the veterans and they pass them out to all of the veterans who come to the local military museum.

Other ideas and organizations that help veterans and current members of the military:

Give 2 the Troops supports deployed soldiers, military families and units. If you wanted to send a case of just about *anything*, they would parcel it out into care packages.

If you live close to a military base or even an airport, you can volunteer with the USO. There are USO lounges in many major airports that are used by members of the military, including those going to and from deployments.

You could use Veteran's Day to make cards for deployed soldiers and send them through the Red Cross. They have a "Holiday Mail for Heroes" program. The American Red Cross has *several* programs to help support the military and military veterans, contact your local branch to see which programs are available locally.

The Wounded Warrior Project works with soldiers injured in combat

Operation Homefront supports the families of deployed soldiers in countless ways. If you have a local military base or national guard unit, find out if there are families in need in your area. It could be as simple as offering to do some yardwork for a wife whose husband is deployed.

Are you an animal lover? You can foster the pet of a deployed soldier:

Do you have a local VFW? They could always use volunteers. So could the American Legion. They both have posts all over the country.

Do you have a local Gold Star Moms or Gold Star Wives group? Gold Star Moms are women who have lost a child in combat, Gold Star Wives are men or women who have lost a spouse in combat.

Mission HeartHug sends care packages to military spouses.

Wow! Thanks for all these ideas!

This past Memorial Day we worked with a local girl scout troop to remove American flags from the National Cemetery. So maybe there is a National Cemetery close where you could help place or remove flags.

  2. Relationships are so much more important that curriculum. Love being with your kids - farts, dawdling, pencil dropping, and all.

Do something special every day. Make a cool lunch - or just cut the PB&J into a star. Give them candy for memory work. Put a sticker on their math. Wake them up with hot chocolate. Make memories. It's worth being 10 minutes behind schedule. No stress here - enjoy the process and time.

Thank you! I needed the reminder.

  3. The book is Hostage Lands by Douglas Bond. An elementary age Latin student discovers an ancient roman manuscript and has to translate it to uncover the mystery.

Thank you! It's going on my wish list! :D

One thing I told my daughter was that for thousands of years, across much of the world, the most educated people learned Latin. So learning Latin gives her a connection to a lot of the most educated people in history.

    I'm going to use this!

  4. The Proverbs 31 woman had insomnia too?:tongue_smilie:

It was probably the night sweats that got her up that early.

    :lol::lol::lol:

Anything that involves getting up before 7am is a nightmare, not a fantasy.

And there's no way that anybody in my house would be in bed before 10pm (more like midnight for dh and I) except when sick.

That's the way it is here. Though I do get up at 7am and walk before everyone wakes up. My husband leaves for work right before 8. This allows me my alone time before I am hit with all the demands.

Another homeschool mom once told me that whoever gets up first is who is in charge. In my house, I, unfortunately, have found that to be true. If I get up after them, I feel like I am behind most of the day. :tongue_smilie:

  5. I know one of the homeschool ladies here who was diagnosed with RA sometime this past spring and heard her doctor started her eating vegetarian. From my understanding, hers is pretty aggressive. It came on very quickly. Here are a couple of her blogs about it - http://rawellness.blogspot.com/ and http://artags.blogspot.com/search/label/Just%20me .

It does look like after reading her blog that she has started taking methotrexate. I don't know much about RA but maybe this will be of some help. :grouphug:

  6. Your alarm goes off at 4:45 - 5:00 am and you joyfully leap out of bed. You go downstairs for a hot cup of Dunkin Donuts coffee from your Keurig while you listen to worship music, read your Bible and have a blissful quiet time. You then hop on your eliptical machine for 30 rigourous minutes to get those endorphins flowing. You eat a wholesome breakfast while your children are still asleep. You have your second cup of coffee and browse your favorite homeschool blogs, message boards and Facebook.

You take a nice long hot shower and dress nicely head to toe, hair and makeup done, earrings on and shoes on.

Your children rise at 7:00-7:30 and call you blessed as you feed them a wholesome breakfast. Without complaining or fighting or whining, or making a mess, they dress, wash their face, bruth their teeth and are ready at 8 for a half hour of cooperative family chore time whereas by 8:30am, your entire house is clean and spic and span from top to bottom, for everyone has done their assigned chores.

They happily bounce onto the sofa at 8:30am to listen to you read fantastic literature selections from all of the magnificent curriculum you have purchased. They diligently work on their schoolwork and lapbooks, notebooks..whatever throughout the day.

Full of energy after a whole foods lunch, you take them all over kingdom come to their activities, bringing with you your knitting, lesson planning, a good book etc because your hands are never idle.

You come home, freshen up, and have an outstanding dinner ready for hubby as he gets home from a long hard day at work.

The children practice their piano or other instruments, have a nice tubby and the family reads a wonderful read aloud together before agreeably going to bed on time without complaint.

All prepared for tomorrow, you get to bed by 9pm after a relaxing quiet time of reading, so that you'll be all ready to start over again tomorrow.

    Oh man..I think I feel nauseas again....:lol::lol:

I am reading this out loud to my family, as I am crying from laughing so hard!!

  7. I've watched it once or twice but don't allow it. And it is because of the lack of respect they show for each other. My girls always seem to be meaner to each other after watching Spongebob as well as Finneus and Ferb. Although, my girls are amazingly more respectful and nicer since not watching tv at all.

  8. I had one of those moms who was really, really good at being a mom, but was too self-sacrificing. I remember begging not to have to participate in park and rec basketball when I was 12 and getting the "I'm going without new clothes so you can have these opportunities" speech :glare:. So whenever there is any extra money I tend to go straight to "How can I use this to improve DH/kids life?" rather than spending it on myself, even if I need something.

I have felt the same way for a long time then one day it came to me that I wanted it to be different for my girls. I want them to see it modeled as a mom that it is ok to spend money on yourself and still be a good mom.

Don't get me wrong, it is still hard to think this way, but I do want my girls to be free of the guilt that I've had, if and when they become a mother.

  9. It sounds like Story of the World would be right up your alley. It's a lot of reading, and there are a ton of hands on projects in the activity book.

    :iagree:

    SOTW1 w/ Activity Guide

The Activity Guide makes it come alive!! My girls squeal when it's time for Mapwork. Who knew? :001_smile:
