We are switching after Horizon Pre Algebra and considering Saxon.

If I were doing it again I might have switched after Horizon 6.

We did not use the flash cards either. 

I put together a reference binder with math reference sheets, charts, etc..... that my children can use

when they are in doubt about anything.

Looking back at the resources pages helps and soon they do not need them any longer.
