My son who is a senior in HS is currently taking online classes through Liberty University. He has enjoyed all the classes he has taken. He can do the work at anytime during the day and does not need to watch live lectures. At the end of this school year, he will have earned 15 college credits through Liberty. They have a special program called "The Edge" program which is geared toward HS juniors and seniors and offers reduced tuition for classes.

My ds who is 14 started Geometry in January using Teaching Textbooks. He does fine with everything except for the proofs. He seems to understand the postulates, theorems, etc. He can't formalize the strategy for completing a proof. If I sit with him and do it with him, he gets it but I have to pretty much tell him each step. Do some kids just not get proofs? TIA for any suggestions!

I am looking for a 1 semester personal finance course for my son who will be in 12th grade. I ran across Ramsey's program called "Foundations in Personal Finance." Has anyone used this program? Are there any other good personal finance programs out there? I want to make sure my son know how to balance a checkbook before he graduates from high school!:001_smile: TIA!

I went to a seminar this past summer that encouraged HS students to take CLEP exams to test out of some of the basic college classes to save money and time in college. Has anyone taken this route with their children? If so, has it been a worthwhile endeavor? TIA SharonK

My son who is now a Junior in HS followed this following sequence with Teaching Textbooks: Grade 8: Algebra 1, Grade 9: Geometry, and Grade 10: Algebra 2. I considered using the TT Precalculus book this year for 11th grade, but decided against it since the CD's were not available this summer when I was making my decision. He took the SAT in May of 10th grade when he was just about finished with the Algebra 2 text. He was a bit discouraged when he came home from the test. He said that there were quite a few function questions on the SAT and he had not covered them yet in TT. Functions are not covered until the last 5 lessons or so in TT Algebra 2. He did feel that TT prepared him well for the Geometry questions. He scored about 600 on the math section of the SAT and will be taking it again in the spring. I decided to go with Chalkdust Pre-calculus for my son since my younger son is using their Pre-algebra program and is doing very well. After I purchased Pre-calculus, I discovered that my son was not ready for it coming out of TT Algebra 2. What I am doing now with him is quickly going through Chalkdust Algebra 2, covering all the things he had not yet covered in TT. Chalkdust covers a lot more territory in Algebra 2. After we finish reviewing Chalkdust Algebra 2, we will move to Chalkdust Pre-calculus. If I could do math over again with my son I would probably use Chalkdust all the way through, but perhaps use TT for Geometry. SharonK

My son will be starting Chalkdust Algebra 2 soon. This is his first year using Chalkdust. The company suggests purchasing a TI-83 calculator to use with the program. The TI-84 seems to have more capabilities. Should we purchase the TI-84 or stick with the TI-83? I don't want him to get confused in the Chalkdust program since they reference the TI-83. TIA!
