  1. Coffee-- I buy two 12 oz bags for about $8 each every week so that is about $400/year, plus I spend about $20/month on K-cups for work, so that is another $120. I don't buy coffee out much at all, so $520/year.

Seltzer - I don't care for it much, but teenage son drinks a ton. Probably another $300/year.

Alcohol - DH loves expensive beer. I hate to add this up. One four-pack is $12, he drinks at least two four packs a week, that is $1248, but more realistically probably $2k when you count going out with friends. I spend about $60/month on wine, so that is another 720/year. So total $2720 year on drinking! Too much.

    No tobacco, thankfully.

  2.  My dd is starting college in the fall and I estimate she will leave with about 40k in loans between federal loans and then what we need to take out to make up the difference. This is after some grants and scholarships. It's not ideal, but we were not in a position to save for a long time due to paying back our own college loans, etc. We will help her as much as we can to minimize the effect it will have on her future.

  3. I dislike being called "hon" by store workers who are clearly younger than me. It feels demeaning in some way.

I also really dislike being called "mom" by pediatricians and the like. Would it be so hard to look down at the chart and learn my name? It makes me feel like this interchangeable "mom" figure and not a person.

  4. I am a reading specialist, and I have used Aimsweb. You should definitely see more growth in a first grade student from middle to end of year.

Each state and district is different, but in the school where I work, we would not distinguish between IEP and other students in determining Tier 2 reading groups (basically, pullout services). The only difference is that IEP students are guaranteed this extra support and it must be done by a certified teacher or reading specialist. We mix IEP and non-IEP students as long as the group instructor is certified. It sounds like your school has a different approach.

However, in that case, considering that he does not have an IEP reading goal, he should definitely be considered for extra reading support along with the general population of kids. Having an IEP in other areas should not make him ineligible for this support. I would definitely fight this, as the classroom reading instruction is not meeting his needs. Good luck!

  5. Try this tahini sauce from an NYT recipe. It's great for grain bowls!

    • 2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice, plus more as needed
    • 1 garlic clove, finely grated or minced
    • ¼ teaspoon kosher salt, plus more as needed
    • ¼ cup extra-virgin olive oil
    • 3 tablespoons tahini

Not even a McDonald’s fish sandwich?!? Those were a special treat growing up in the Midwest. As was Friday night all you can eat fish dinners during Lent.

It was never served at school? I’m also from the Midwest and year round we had fish on Fridays at public school. It was a very Catholic area though. And there were never any other lunch options and no one ever brought lunch because our elementary school food was primarily homemade and amazing.

Nope, never had a McD's fish sandwich. They must have served fish at my elementary school (I seem to have a memory of tartar sauce and the kids calling it Carter sauce  because that was our teacher's name), but I never ate it! I rarely ate anything from my school lunches unless it was the rare waffle day. I also didn't drink milk unless it was the rare chocolate milk day. I must have been hungry a lot because I was never allowed to bring cold lunch either as I was a "free lunch" kid.

What?  Never?   Are you allergic?  I am trying to imagine a world where you can live without ever being served seafood.

No, not allergic, but vegetarian since age 15, and come from a poor midwest family so never had seafood before then!

  8. The afterschool program at our local school is not actually run by the school; the program uses school space but it is completely separate. This program is now the one that is running the daycare during remote learning, in the school cafeteria, and there are not many children signed up as it is pricy. At least in my area, that is usually how the childcare programs tied to the schools work--the school is not making any money from them, just allowing the space as a service to the families.

  9. I would caution against a keto diet. It can help with weight loss in the short term but possibly at the expense of your longer-term health. There are a lot of healthy foods that you cannot eat on this diet (whole grains, fruit, beans), and a lot of unhealthy foods that are approved (butter, bacon, etc). We definitely need more long-term diet research, but Nutritionfacts.org is a very good site for breaking down what studies do tell us about diet and health, and there are some videos about keto there. https://nutritionfacts.org/topics/keto-diet/
