  1. This board/forum is the only place I've heard about the Duggar family. I've never heard anyone in "real life" mention them. I've never seen anything about them in print media. I rarely watch television, but apparently the show(s?) about this family attract viewers ~ at least based on the comments on this board. Why? Aside from the fact that they have a lot of children (which in and of itself is of no interest to me), what's your attraction to these people?:001_huh:

Are you genuinely interested in what the attraction is?

  2. I am a fairly simple individual, and make no claim to towering intellect or deep understanding of momentous issues. I like art, I love poetry and I read voraciously. In my time I have come up with a fairly simple set of rules by which I judge other’s works.

If I could paint it….it is not art

If I could write it ….it is not literature

If I could pen it…. it is not a poem.

Those more intelligent than me will prattle on about inner meanings, seeing beyond mere brush strokes, hearing beyond the words etc. There is some truth to this, but in most cases there needs to be some substance to these stokes or words before one can move beyond them to appreciate a work on a higher level.

In the case of the Alexander poem, I must say that it is tripe, unadulterated and pure (if tripe can be such). It has no merit. Given that it was supposed to be written for the American people, as a whole (it was OUR inauguration), I would argue that it is beyond the comprehension of all but those few who seem to have lost touch with reality in a desperate search for greater meaning, or those (probably on this board) who can find the best in the worst, and finally those who are so dull in their intellect that they, like lemmings, accept that a poem is good simply because they are told so.

I am not arguing for rhyme, but rather for a piece of work that generates pride in one’s nation, love of the land, anything….

With the exception of the lines

"Say it plain, that many have died for this day. Sing the names of the dead who brought us here, who laid the train tracks, raised the bridges, picked the cotton and the lettuce, built brick by brick the glittering edifices they would then keep clean and work inside of."

There is little if anything to recommend this piece.

Of course when compared to the blatantly racist poem of Lowery

"we ask you to help us work for that day when black will not be asked to get in back, when brown can stick around ... when yellow will be mellow ... when the red man can get ahead, man; and when white will embrace what is right."

...maybe there is something to recommend Alexander.

Shakespeare, Kipling, Longfellow, Frost, Byron et al must be spinning in their graves that we have sunk so far as to call what Alexander produced "a great poem."

    You rock, pqr. ;)

  3. I'm curious about another aspect as well. God created man to have fellowship with God. So as God was creating people he was creating certain ones just to send to hell? And certain ones to send to heaven? So why even create the ones to send to hell?

I believe that we all have free will. And I also believe that God DOES know who will be going to heaven and who will be going to hell.....because he is all knowing. However, I also believe that we have free will to choose that path for ourselves.

Man was created to glorify God. I cannot explain Calvinism, predestination, etc., as eloquently as others here, but I would recommend you research it. I once thought as you, but through studying the Bible, Reformed Theology and Arminianism, I have come to believe that God is Sovereign and may elect whom he chooses. He is God. I cannot wrap my feeble mind around many aspects of God, but why should I be able to?

  4. He wasn't debriefed. He is not the same person. We kinda had an idea of things he has gone through. But they are much, much worse. He has talked with my dad some and that seems to help somewhat. But he is not doing too good being back in civilian life all of a sudden.

I can't imagine how hard the transition must be. I'm glad your dad can talk with him and has some insight as to what he may be experiencing. I'm sorry, Heather.

  5. I think you call the VA and tell them he is manifesting signs of PTSD. He needs help. You give your boy a hug and (if you pray) you pray with him for his uncle and the others involved in this war.

I would not call the VA. I don't know what signs your db is exhibiting, but unless you think he is a danger to himself or others, I would not contact anyone.

Praying for you and your db!

    :grouphug:

  6. I read the posts before I went to her blog. It was the "look at all that snow" response that tipped me off.

I was actualy trying to determine whether to post that such a contest would be "morally wrong" or "okay as long as dh knows and doesn't mind". :o

    I am overtired...:leaving:

  7. We joke that wrestling (my older son wrestles) is part of our classical education. The Greeks did it!

I think it's a fine sport. The boys (and a few girls on my son's team) exhibit both strength and strategy.

I always feel for the guys who have to wrestle a girl. That must be very uncomfortable for most of them. I know it was on my son's team.
