  1. We've done this so far w/ two of our kiddos.  I completed their forms, attached all evals I had on the children and my accommodation plan I write each year.

My accommodation plan is very simple -- I list the child's name, school year, a brief description of the disability and then list accommodations like so:

    1.  Due to slower processing speed Suzy will be allowed extended time for all exams and in-class assignments.

    2.  Due to fine-motor skills deficits and Dysgraphia Suzy will utilize a computer to compose all written work or will dicate her work.

    3.  Suzy will be provided extended time on standardized tests.

    4.  Due to difficulty with tracking and copying Suzy will circle her answers on the test booklet and will not be required to complete scan-tron/bubble test sheets.

They told us 3 years ago that they wanted to see a history of the accommodations being provided in the "classroom" setting or for standardized testing.  Then this past year they told me that really what  they want to know for the most part is that the individual who performed the evaluation found the dc to have disability x and that they recommended accommodations of a, b, c.

Be persistent and if they turn you down follow up.  They actually denied dd;s twice this year - when they had approved it a few years ago -- on my follow up after the 2nd denial the lady on the phone kept telling me I didn't include information to verify the diagnosis as being current and the accommodations needed.  I ask if she had a copy of dd's file in front of her and walked her through it.  Her reply, "well we don't have time to read all the material submitted.  I'll send this back and indicate on the front that the documentation is here."  In less than 48 hours I had an e-mail confirming dd's accommodations!

Could I clarify that you did not have an "official" IEP or 504 and you were still granted the accommodations for the testing? I do many of the same things you do to accodomate my sons struggles but we don't have any official Dr. diaganosis to prove he has auditory processing issues or dyslexia for example. Thanks for your help.

  2. I'm using Biology with the Sassafras book.  We are 4 weeks in and my boys ages 8 and 11 as well love it!  They love the story!  It's well written and my kids beg for more, which I make them wait unti the next week.  We have the activity guide and are enjoying it so much.  A gem this year!  We have also used the clasic in years past but this by far is our favorite.

  3. Ours will we:

    Ancient world history

    Medieval history

American history (required by the state)

    Modern world history

    For literature:

    World lit I

    World lit II

    Victorian lit

    Modern lit

Thanks I think this is what I'm looking for and was thinking of similar titles. Yes we also have a requirement for American history and world history so this seems like it would work out great. Thanks for your help.

  4. If you are following the WTM what are your History class names for your transcript for your 3 or 4 credit hours for history? I'm trying to understand if we study Ancients in 9th, Middle ages 10th, Renaissance 11th and Modern 12th, but are required by the state to have High School credit for World History, American History, and one other history, how does this translate? For example could you have your high school history credits be World history 1 (9th) world history 2 (10th) American history 1 (11th) and American history 2 (12th) ? What are some class names for your transcript you used when you followed the WTM history cycle? Have you done all 4 years for high school when usually its not required? Thanks for any help.

  5. I have a son finishing up Singapore Math 6B and wanted to know if Lial would be a good fit for him to do next? I do not have any experience with Lial but looking to take on online class with it. Would this be a hard transition if hes only done Singapore. He does not struggle with Singapore but also likes the mastery type of program. Thanks for any advise.

  6. Hi. We live in Indonesia and my son is currently studying Indonesian here. He studies 4 hours a week with a teacher. Will this count for his language credits for High School? Or should he also be studying another traditional language like Spanish, French, German... If he studies Latin would that also count for Language requirements? Thanks for your help.

  7. We are in 3rd year cycle of SOTW and my 7th grader has read all of the recommend reading from the WTM. We are only half way through the school year. What would you recommend he read for the second half of the year? Should I move into 8th grade reading but then we will be in modern times and be in the same boat next year? I Added Henty books so this should slow him a bit, but wanted to see what other American history books to add or any other suggestions for the rest of this school year reading.

    thanks

  8. We had our boys start Rosetta Stone and they had a great jump on language learning. They did it for 20 mins a day 4-5 times a day for 5 months before we came and it was amazing what they had picked up and were able to start using when we arrived. Where are you going to be located? We are pretty remote in Sumatra.

Go luck with language. Its a blast seeing the kids speak and use another language.

  9. with the same ages of kids. At times it was overwhelming all the details of all the battles, but overall they loved it. We did a lot of civil war hands on activities which helped the younger crew and lots of hands on world war 2 activities as well. It is doable and I recommend it. I think the new coloring pages will help. We had lots of coloring books to add to it. I would just keep in mind that your first grader really does not have to "get it all." Hope you have a great year.

  10. Just one more thing...from using Singapore just a few weeks, after using BJU for a year, I think I would supplement Singapore heavily with drill/review worksheets or activities if I used it for my main curriculum. It doesn't have nearly the review and fact review built in that BJU did (not that it is the perfect curriculum by any stretch, but it has some similarities to Singapore in how they teach things conceptually. It isn't heavy on the mental math like Singapore is though). I know it is in the HIG's to do certain activities for review and drill, but I like having printed things to have my dd do as "homework" or extra practice. I've read somewhere that Singapore assumes you will do fact drill separately. This is just what I would do, and I thought I'd mention it since you said there wasn't daily review of facts.

    That is helpful as well!

  11. Thanks for all your input. My son loves the mastery approach and maybe that is just what I am struggling with. I am use to spiral and my oldest loves Saxon. I think I am worried that Singapore just does not spend enough time mastering and because we don't add and subtract and multiply and divide everyday I can't tell if he really has his facts in place.

Along with that sometimes I don't feel like I have any more teaching time to spend with him on math and so I started second guessing if MUS would be a better fit with the videos.

But I think I will stick with Singapore a bit longer and also look at BJU. I did not know they were a mastery program. Thanks for all your input.
