  1. Hi! This is my first post on here so I'm just excited about that! :-P So for our first two years of homeschooling, I was too chicken to work on my own so we were in a cyber charter public school. Ick. Can't believe I stuck with that for 2 full years. So we were at home but still dealing with the typical public school subjects and curriculum styles and were really bogged down by it. This year was our first year going "rogue" and after reading WTM last summer we went with a classical approach (obviously). :-) I started out following a schedule example I had found but it was pretty hectic jumping from subject to subject. I felt like just transitioning to each subject added a lot of time and clutter to our day. So we simplified things a bit and used a form of block scheduling. different than what I saw mentioned earlier, although that month at time example was interesting as well. We do some basics every day like math and phonics. (we use phonics road so when i say phonics that's including reading/writing/spelling/grammar/dictation, the works.) All of our other subjects we block, meaning we focus on one each day. So for example, bible- monday, history- tuesday, geography-wednesday, writing project (which correlates with our history learning)- thursday, friday- arts/crafts and leftovers. Also literature my dd reads on her own each day as she's a huge reader. My ds is only 5 and learning to read so I read him his literature throughout the week at bedtime or during the day if it works out that way. We also do science twice a week and we fit that in on our 2 days that are least cluttered depending on the season and what outside activities we have going on. We tend to do subjects that I'm most involved in in the morning. things that we do all together as well as things that need lots of my input. then we do a quick lunch and I have them do their independent work in the afternoons which gives me a break to take care of other things I need to get done for the day. Sometimes our morning stuff overflows into the afternoon and that's okay. Also, independent work varies depending on the kid and the subject. for example my 8yo daughter's math program is very independent so she does that in the afternoons along with writing projects, handwriting, etc. My son's math, since he's younger, requires my involvement but his phonics he can do independently. This fall things will change a bit as they're both ready to do a little bit more on their own. so I'm sure each year things change a bit. Like everyone else, I don't worry about exact times, I look at it as blocks of my day or sections that are fairly flexible. We start around 10am and try to be done around 3pm. Sometimes that doesn't happen but that's our general goal. Hope that helps. Sorry it's so long! I need to get accustomed to all the shorthand and abbreviations you guys use! :-)
