  1. Personally, I am not for labels. My perspective has changed! Neuropsych testing is good, it tells you what accommodations should be made and where the child is at. I would personally look at diet and alternative approaches. My son went through way too much, 23 hospitalizations, 2 treatment centers, and we find out now that his Bipolar was caused by gluten and casein! We went through 10 years of horrible stuff. Now he no longer meets criteria for bipolar. He has PTSD from a tornado we were in and now we are left with trying to figure out what is left and what is caused from 10 years of complete instability.
  2. We attempted to do Write Shop, and he is not ready. He has been doing a ton of healing, as he was so ill for 10 years, and missed so much learning. I thought he was ready for WS, and no, he is not. It was a major battle to get done what we got done from lesson 1. He has a hard time writing sentences that are complete, punctuated correctly, and are interesting. WS focuses more on expanding current writing skills that my son does not have. Like describe an object without "it feels" "it looks". I am hoping that he will be ready for it someday soon so I do not waste that money. We did Easy Grammar Plus for grammar without anything sticking. We also do not have a ton of money to spend. Any ideas of something engaging, that will make this information stick? Something not geared towards lower elementary? Something that does not require a ton out of me, since he HATES me having to teach him?
  3. My son is supposed to be in 9th grade, but I am holding him back in 8th bc he is not ready, ended up at the hands of the public school system for a few months, which entirely wrecked my plans on catching him up. He is very visual, hates traditional textbooks, has major processing speed issues as well as executive functioning deficits. We used T4L for a brief time in between moves and he seemed to love it. My big thing is trying to get him a decent education and him retaining it. He wants to go to college so bad, I am just trying to get him there. We are secular schoolers. I would continue using MUS for his math, since that is the area that he is really struggling with, and keep Sequential Spelling since it is so good for him. Anything that has less planning and less one to one requirement is AWESOME. Please help!
  4. I have been searching and searching. I am thinking about holding off on the Wordly Wise book 4 that is on its way. I just got the Easy Grammar Plus. It is a HUGE book, which may pose to be an issue, at first glance, it has them unscramble prepositions but I do not even think he knows what they are! I do not even know if I remember! That is the only book that has come so far, but more should be on their way. I started using a free spelling resource that someone had posted, Spelling for writing, and I started on 3rd grade. So far he has been quizzed on week 1 and 2 and got them all write so I think we will continue and once he starts getting things wrong, I will start having him do the worksheets. I will continue to print off some of the basic worksheets for nouns, verbs, etc, then start in with the Easy Grammar Plus. I just have no clue as far as writing. He has trouble just writing a decent sentence. He needs to work on it, I know the grammar will help, but I have no clue what would be best. Thanks
  5. Please!!!!! I totally agree that there needs to be a middle school forum. :iagree:
  6. My son is an 8th grader, but does not have down basic sentence structure and the putting them into paragraphs. His sentences remind me of a 1st grader. Is there anything out there for him? His grammar and spelling are horrible, I have Easy Grammar Plus, Editor in Chief B1, Reading Detective RX on their way here now as well as Wordly Wise book 4. I am trying to put as much energy into the LA right now, writing, spelling, grammar, and reading comprehension. We are still doing Science, SS, and math, but we really need to emphasize the LA this year IMO
  7. Ok, my son has been in a public virtual school up until this upcoming Jan bc we are moving and starting a military adventure. I have no experience with traditional homeschooling, just the curriculum that they have at Connections Academy. My son is in 8th grade, but at 6th grade math. He has many executive functioning deficits, a diagnosis of Bipolar and ADHD, hates to write, needs something fun, but it has to be something I can step back from. I am incredibly busy as it is, I am a full time student myself and CA is not really working very well anymore since he is refusing to write, especially with math! He thinks he knows it all and can do it in his head! I feel like everything about this kid is so complicated. I need to finish out 8th grade with him since we are being dropped when we move and then figure out something for high school. He needs consistancy and loves technology. I was thinking about using Bridgeway Homeschool Academy for 2nd semester since they apparently have all these curriculum options and customizations. Now I am kind of at a doubt bc I am seeing Teaching Textbooks and thinking wow, that would really teach him his math. I was also looking at mathathlitics? I NEED help! Any suggestions would be great. I am going nuts bc we are going to be gone all of Dec and moving in Jan so I need a plan! Thanks!
