  2. all summer long!

That's how I feel about HS this year. It'll be my 6th year.

Summer did not recharge me at all this time.

A friend I admire and respect is sending her kids to PS this year. It was like a kick when I am down! I am really weak right now and tempted to send my kids...

DH wants them to stay home.

I want to not be a wrung out, frantic, frazzled, frustrated woman.

I'm not sure that I can do it. YOu'd think I'd be good at this since I've been doing it this long, but my kids and I are.....HUMAN! *gasp*

I struggle with trying to keep up with the HSers I know in real life - they seem to be doing so much better than I am.

Wow. Sorry to have all that pity party here!

I guess I'm just agreeing with you - it is hard and you will be tired.

    Eat pizza.

    Have a drink.

    Go for a walk.

  3. I read your post and I just wanted to reply in the hope that someone will chime in with advice. I'm kind of in the same boat as you - oldest ds is entering 5th and it'll be our 4th year of CC. I really like how much he's grown with his writing due to the Essentials program in CC. Like you, I'm questioning if I want to follow the path all the way thru CC...

My plan is to start watching these boards and glean from the Hive!

    In the meantime though....

    :bigear: :bigear: :bigear:

Any moms out there with words or wisdom or "Don't do this!" advice?

    Warmly,

  4. A little introduction...since I will be lurking here! My name is Michele, married to George and we have 3 kids- ds 10, dd 7.5, and dd 5 that we've always HSed b/c we're just crazy like that. DH has a childhood background in Orthodoxy - his granparents raised him for a time. He and I are generic Protestants in search of "something more". He gave me several books on Orthodoxy for Christmas last year and sounded serious about looking further...but no real movement there. He has me intrigued. So, I'm hoping to learn more here. There is an Orthodox church in out town - so it's available, but he wants to go meet the priest and check it all out before bringing the fam. He's convinced we'll bolt upon seeing a service. :tongue_smilie:

Does anyone have any sites or books you recommend I investigate? I have Facing East and I've heard of Evlogia but it's not up anymore...I feel like I need to see a REAL life of Orthodoxy in practice! Help this chick out, girls!

    Thanks,

    Michele

  5. Hi Ladies -

Our family is beginning to explore Orthodoxy.....we're standing at the start of a long journey. I am reading "Facing East" and dh is going to visit with the priest this week.

He was raised Orthodox as a child, but due to family situations moved away and now feels called but "like he knows the music but forgot the words."

    I think there is a group here - can I join? :001_smile: I want to know what I don't know! :tongue_smilie:

  6. Boy, this is a toughie. You certainly don't want the parents to feel like you're "targeting" their kids - but, if problems happen every week it's not fair to the other kids or you. You can't be everywhere! Some kiddos are just trickier.

Hopefully you're documenting and making the parents aware of each incident, so it's not a "But we didn't know!" reaction later.

Does your church have a policy?

If a teen/adult helper isn't available or a solution, have the kid(s) go with their parents. There's a season to everything...this may not be their season to teach SS.

I hope it all works out for everyone involved,

    Michele

  7. Hey, that's funny - my name is Michele and I live in CA too. :tongue_smilie:

We moved cross country for a dream job (spacex.com)for dh 3 years ago.

Initially, I really didn't like it here, but I am "adjusting".

We have always hsed....we owned a dive shop and thought we'd live out of the US....wait! Is SoCal still the US? :tongue_smilie:

We have 3 kids and a hamster. In my past life I was a critical care RN. I really like art, reading, camping, and having a quiet minute to myself (still waiting on that one).

I am a SWB fan club member - saw her at the Long Beach Convention. She moved me to tears with her family story. Thank you, if you read these threads.

    Warmly,

    Michele

  8. Awesome! I had SL for our 1st year of K and it has paid so many returns. My other 2 kiddos have used the SL books many times over and my dd is now learning to read the SL way.

We made a fort with our SL box in the back yard...ok, so we were trying to make the catalog pics :tongue_smilie:

    Enjoy it, mom!!!!

    Warmly,

    Michele

  9. As an RN, I've seen all kinds of tatoos. The ones elderly WWII vets have, the homemade/prison style, hearts n' flowers, etc.

My hands down fav was one that said

    "Keep Off The Grass!"

I'll let the imaginations run wild as to where placement was! :tongue_smilie:

  10. lower - lower - lower middle class girl here. My dad was laid off frequently by his job at an auto plant and my mom was very ill and in and out of the hospital constantly. Bills sky high, plenty o' fighting over those bills. We wore horrible thrift store clothes and ate from the garden and gleaned from the orchard behind our house and from the church pantry. It was considered shameful to be in this position and the blame was placed on my sick mother. I seriously believe that my dad's family just wanted her to die already so they could stop hearing about the bills. They were poor like us though. We got stuff like socks for Christmas. I worked and put myself thru college and got my degree in nursing.

DH's family lived an upper middle class life - he made a significant amount as an entrepreneur before we met, but lost it all. So I married up. His mom was very disappointed we didn't have our wedding at a country club and I was mightily relieved we didn't have it at the ancient decaying fire hall my parents wanted to use. SO, no one was happy but us, and that's ok!

It turns out his mom and step dad were living on all credit - he passed and now she lives in gov't housing for the elderly.

We're middle class and I am thrilled. I'm still panicked about money at times. dh is more of a "it'll work out" kind of guy. He's a great planner and money manager.

I really am very fortunate and mindful of it.

  11. I have been out and about today and it is encouraging to hear so many different ideas and posts.

It has helped me to be more objective...something I struggle with regarding my kids!

I'm not sure what I will be doing yet but I do know that she will feel pretty bad if I tell her she's going to stay a second grader next year.

She does seem young compared to her peers - but whether that's b/c she's not the most outgoing kid or just b/c she's young is a guess to me.

She'll be 7 for about a month of school in the Fall until her October birthday (10/21)

Thanks for being a sounding board.

    Warmly,

    Michele
