  1. My DD6 is doing something similar to this. I would just start from scratch and move forward as fast as she wants. I'm trying not to freak out as well. I'm trying Rod and Staff Arithmetic 1, as it is similar to some K programs and goes through counting and the numbers for longer than some 1st grade curricula.

  2. I'd think the bigger problem might be finding housing. I've heard the the oil boom, combined with a lack of housing to begin with, has driven up the price enormously in that part of the state.

Everything is more expensive up there. All the people who aren't working in oil and still have lower-paying jobs (which was par for ND) are suffering some. Groceries, gas, everything is more expensive unless you work in oil, which pays big.

  3. I apologize for the language I used. I used the early cores on the recommendation of a friend before we found our groove. But, once I looked further into the coming years, I was very disappointed. As a historian, the absurdities of Sonlight's notes (among many other issues) really make me wonder how it has been held in such high esteem.

But, as to who cares, it's not just something I dislike. I've come across plenty of programs that I personally dislike and have no problem with others using them at all. This is something that is teaching complete fiction as fact, and I find that to be a problem. Personally, I don't see how someone can feel comfortable trusting a such a program.

That's cool. I am finding this thread irritating and enlightening! If I had not read this, I would not have been able to pick out inaccuracies such as this, and I am thankful for that.

PS: I changed my previous original post because it felt inflammatory to me.

  4. Okay, I read the IG sample http://www.sonlight....week-sample.pdf

John Holzmann's notes on this are on pages 15-17 and the chart OP references is on page 25. Wow, just wow. I really shouldn't be surprised given the level of scholarship that I found out we are dealing with in the slavery and Sonlight thread, but I just can't believe people pass over crap like this and continue to purchase from them because they have some good books or a handy schedule.

Yes, I think it's bizarre that SL would include these things, and it gives me pause on the rest of their notes, but there is no reason to attack someone's decision to use this curriculum. It seems you have a bone to pick with SL, but the accusations mystify me. Who cares if someone else chooses to use something that you dislike? I can see why you are incensed about the inaccuracies displayed in this, but the "can't believe people pass over crap like this..." is just condescending.

I was so surprised that I wanted to call someone and get confirmation that my eyes and brain were reading it right - LOL! But I am super glad for ND. BUT you still have to be tested by a certified teacher in grades 4,6,8 and 10 which is not huge, but would still give us test anxiety.....we test here in the comfort of our home - much easier on the nerves.

My dh has been looking around there for work opportunities too, but he keeps looking at the winters there and shudders....

So cold. Just so cold and bitter and . . .

  6. I thought you had to have a Bachelor's in education as well, but it looks like it changed! I'm from ND,and yes it is sparsely populated, but the oil boom there is crazy, and there are thousands of people pouring in like a gold rush. Williston is one of the biggest booms there, along with my hometown of Minot.

  7. It does have a tiny footnote at the bottom stating that these dates are "representative," that it is hard to prove or disprove Fell's claim that Jews settled in Kentucky and Tennessee. It even says the dates are "fairly well-established." It seems they want to point out that these are not hard and true facts, and they aren't attempting to fool anyone with them.

  8. I am having trouble choosing a math for my 6yo next year for 1st grade. She is having problems with learning any math this year in K, and I need to start out with something gentle. We're taking a math break now, as she wasn't learning a thing and was just stressed out. I have noticed when we just do the same things for months on end, she gets stressed out, so I'm not sure if a mastery type math will help her at all. She is having trouble recognizing numbers, although she has made tiny, tiny, tiny progress this year. She does read and understands symbols there. I suspect a learning disability, but everyone tells me to not worry about that yet.

Anyhow, I've thought of CLE or MUS. I just don't know what to do with her. Any thoughts on this?

  9. It might be mine! I'm Butterflies and Barefoot Lasses. Homeschool Blogger was taken over by someone else, and they erased my old blog, so I moved to a much more stable environment.

    Here is my new blog!

Also, my Core B schedule is shot now that they erased my blog (an you tell I'm irritated?) I will be re-doing the Core B schedule, but it may take several months. All of my posts for Core B are on my new blog above, but the links in my schedule are broken now. They need to be re-updated with the new blog address.

  10.

Are you planning on using CLE 6 in 6th? If so, I am confused since it looks to me that CLE offers CLE 7 and CLE 8 which both appear to be pre-A and then Alg 1 in 9th grade. I just starting using CLE 5 to catch my 6th grader up and so far it's going well. I am also concerned on where we go from here as I was hoping to have to close to ready for CLE 7 by fall. I am expecting to go though CLE5 fairly fast.

Does the explanation in the TE get more detailed in the next books or after 501 (since this is suppose to be review). I am finding that there is not much actual instruction on HOW to teach a problem. Is it just assumed that I should know how to do it?

The first book of each new year is completely review. Then in the rest of the Light Units, there are instructions on how to teach.

  11. I just made a large order from Rainbow and a small one from Amazon. I'm waiting for SL's updates to see what I'll do there, probably wait or the new one so it has errors corrected at least. I made some downsizing changes to my buying habits. I usually buy lots of supplemental books, but we end up reading them once and then forgetting them. It seems I bought picture books that were good for history, but not ones that they come back to again and again. My order was smaller, and I'm happy. :)

There are a few stragglers like math for DD6 for 1st grade and her phonics, Dancing Bears.

  12. We are doing the new C now. We liked Understood Betsy, though it was quite slow. The book I really disliked in Core B was Follow My Leader. The new books are excellent. We adore Cornstalks, and we're on our second time through.

Sticks Across the Chimney is about a brother and sister who have a few adventures in Denmark. They live on land with an ancient Viking mound. Great suspense for this age and a lot of fun adventures. This ties in nicely with the Viking unit.

Good Masters Sweet Ladies is an excellent addition, and it lends itself beautifully to the Medieval Ages. Love it!

Lancelot is goofy, but a nice addition and a welcome break.

Hidden Tales from Eastern Europe is read quickly, and are just good stories. The girls loved it and wanted to read it every night.

Pippi is riotous fun, and we love it.

I haven't gotten to the other new additions, but we really like this core, even more than B, which we loved too.
